So the daft Mayweather v Ronda Rousey debate! (Spoiler)

Post by Finn »

so people thought that Ronda Rousey could take Mayweather in an MMA fight. Last night she stepped in the ring with a female boxing champion who took her apart and kod her. Admittedly the end product was a kick but rouseys poor punch resistance and inability to be able to deal with Holly Holms boxing had her ragged.

I think the daft debate has now been settled.

Holly Holm fully committed to learning MMA and has spent a great deal of time at one of the best camps in the sport. Last night was a fighter following her coach's instructions to the letter. She used the trademark Greg Jackson/Mike Winklejohn oblique kicks to the knee to keep Rousey at distance. The more desperate she got to get close- the easier she was to pick off with punches.

A great performance from Holly Holm- but this is not a win for boxing over MMA; the same as Rousey being a dominant champ was not a win for judo over MMA.

I'll disagree and agree with you, this is in no means a win for boxing over MMA. But I think it does show decisively that Mayweather would have destroyed her, Holms only really used the very basics of grappling to hold Ronda off and apart from the two kicks in the last round (which could easily have been punched instead) used boxing to dominate Ronda right from the bell. The couple of thy kicks she threw weren't even needed.

From what I saw Mayweather would have ko's Rousey in the very first exchange.

I know it was a daft debate to start with but a hell of a lot of posters on this site thought Rousey would take Floyd easily.

Holly Holm, handled Rousey quite easy, even in the face off before fight she looked stronger when they did their little push me pull you! Fairplay to Holm for not crumbling mentally with all the bravado of the Rousey hype machine and a great finish. Looking forward to the rematch should be fun.

I dont think it does. Rouse made a point to box with Holmes rather then wrestle. That was a very silly mistake. Plus Holms had a decent grappling training that allowed her to escape few times she was caught. I bet Rousey beats Holmes in rematch quite easily. I mean considering she brings the right approach.

Not at all. You have seen James Toney against an MMA guy. Wrestler should go for a take down immediately. That would not allow boxer to deliver KO punch.

Floyd quite possibly beat Rousey because of the fact that he is much bigger and physically much stronger. But there is a chance he could be caught on an arm lock and loose. Certainly, boxer rarely beats wrestler in one on one contests.

I disagree I don't think she intended to box with Holms she got hit straight away and look dogged from then on, she didn't try to keep it a stand up fight she just failed to turn it into a ground fight.

Cmon man. Look at the fight she did not ever attempted a tekedown, Otherwise what stops her from charging into opponents waist or the legs, she was boxing. You have to also know that her coach, an Armenian dude, has been heavy criticized for emphasizing punching and Rouse was moving away from wrestling in recent time.

The difference is..... Holly Holm knows how to wrestle and kickbox.... Mayweather's just a man who knows how to box.... I don't think he could pull it off, even though she lost last night. One discipline isn't going to defeat a person who knows multiple ones.

A hall of fame world class boxer will beat most mma fighters - believe me. A world class wrestler or Jiu Jitsu practitioner would defeat a so so boxer. There are no MMA fighters with world class striking skills. An ABA champion or UK podium squad boxer would knock most mma fighters (their size) out before it got going.

Tell that to Gene LeBell. Tell that to Royce Gracie. I'm sorry but the evidence is not really there to support your notion or claim. Think Ray Mercer and how he kayoed former UFC champion Tim Sylvia in 9 seconds.... but at the same time, the same Ray Mercer lost to Kimbo Slice.... its all a matter of the draw, when you have a guy with one discipline against a person with multiple disciplines. I'll argue 99 out of 100, the martial artist will defeat the boxer.

Everyone is trying to say it was boxing that won the fight last night, but that isn't true. Boxing was a small percentage of it. Kickboxing and jujitsu won that fight. Had Holm not been developing her jujitsu skills, she wouldnt have broken that armbar hold Ronda put her in. The fight would have been over and done right there and then.

Fact is, just because Mayweather is a HOF level boxer and has a set of nuts between his legs... doesnt mean he's going to break holds, or keep away from such things like Holm... Ronda took some wicked BOMBS from fists, legs and elbows during that first round and still kept coming forward. I think any sort of punch Mayweather could throw, she could take, and then catch him in something.

I used to train alongside some decent boxers, not worldbeaters but people who were good enough to get paid to box, that was in my youth. I am in my 40's and have trained a little bit of MMA for about a year, I respect the instructor and other students but they fool themselves that they have high level punching skills. An typical pro boxer has had years of experience of hitting others who know a punch is on its way and they have the skill to get a bit of leverage behind the punch. A high level amateur boxer with 80 or more bouts under their belt will be leagues in front of an MMA fighter turning over. I've seen a good class amateur boxer against someone with 20 odd amateur bouts and it was nasty to see.

Mayweather has hit hard enough to keep 47 grown and skilled powerful men honest for 36 minutes and he doesn't even go for the KO - he would time someone coming in and demolish them.

Why dont they go and do it then. Great majority of boxers barely make living. They could all be UFC champions apparently. Sorry but thats a ridiculous thing to say. MMA has been around for a long time and there is an ample evidence that wrestler beats boxer most of the time.

She did attempt a take down, she got to Holms on a few occasions and every time Holmes just threw her on the floor, she couldn't take Holms down because she kept getting punched in the face even when she was holding on.

I can't believed you've watched the fight and still believe that Rouseys tactics were to stay on her feet and box with a boxer even when she was clearly losing. She got dicked and couldn't turn it into her fight it's as simple as.

Most high level amateur boxers have years invested in the sport and enjoy what they do - podium level boxers in the UK are on a decent salary and travel the world entering international competitions - they love what they do, its why they are so good at it.

We could also turn it around and ask why an MMA champion doesn't just concentrate on striking and become a world champion boxer when the rewards for elite boxers are in the millions.

Most mma fighters do not have great striking skills and neither do most know how to defend against punches or ride a punch. The average MMA fighter who went to a pro gym in the US or UK to develop their punches would get shown some very hard lessons.

The wrestlers that have beaten boxers in the UFC have been elite level grapplers against either sub standard strikers or past it pros. If it goes that an elite wrestler will defeat a so so boxer is it difficult to imagine an elite boxer beating a so so grappler?

Whole world believes that. Rousey and her couches are taken apart on MMA forums right as we speak for trying to box. Yes she had couple of attempts and Holms managed to get out as I said, courtesy to her wrestling training. Most of the time Rousey was punching rather then trying to take her down.

Yeah but Henry, Holms didn't really use any wrestling in that fight she just man handled Rousey in the clinches, and if she had decided to throw punches instead of landing kicks on the openings it would have been just as easy for her.

I've done MMA and a little bit of boxing, an elite cross trained martial artist will beat an elite boxer if the are the same weight etc in theory (obviously a fights a fight anything can happen). However the issue here is levels; Floyd is a top level boxer probably one of the best in the modern era, Ronda Rousey was an over hyped fighter in a very week division, sorry but she is not an elite fighter not even close. She is not even the best female fighter and the competitiveness of the female divisions are like Sunday league football compared to the men's UFC which would be the premiership (you may need to google that) .

Now GSP or mcgregor against Floyd that's fairly easy to call in theory however anyone who thinks Rousey especially after last night could beat Mayweather has definitely been watching too much expendables 3.

There are lots of pretty good pro boxers that barely make living that would take those armatures apart.

Who said that MMA fighters are a great punchers or have a chance in boxing. The arguement is that you dont need great punching skills in MMA.

So then your logic is that all good boxers are happy and content to box and dont want MMA mllions while all wrestlers are poor bastards have no other options then to go to MMA.

For your information most of the top MMA fighters with judo background are not the top judokas at all.
