Holm is a far better striker than anyone Rousey has faced (the striking ability of her opponents has been comparatively terrible--they look like basic bar room brawlers) and it showed.
I was happy to see the result after all the absurd hype about Rousey being some type of indomitable monster.

I live in Rugby now but i did MMA when i was in Coventry at Combat Athletics trained by a guy called Rich Green, when it was owned by a friend of a friend. I believe the trainer took it over and moved location so they do everything from MMA to kickboxing now but its still in cov.palooka wrote: Mick Shores Martial Arts Academy in Doncaster. My son's been training for a few years now and I started in the adults class so when he gets there we'll have something in common and I wanted him to have a positive view of me.
I'm not a natural, I do a private half hour of escrima then the mma, he teaches a few leg and foot locks from catch wrestling, he trained under Larry Hartwell. I do a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class as well but I'm not getting any better at that - I'm going to either do 2 Jiu Jitsu classes a week or stop altogether, either improve or drop it.
Where are you at, Finn?
I stopped about 7 or 8 years ago when my mrs fell pregnant with my first kid. Did martial arts from the age of 8 up until i was about 26 (im 34 now) but did MMA for about a year and a half its really good for binding various martial arts together and making it comabt effective.
I hear what you are saying about ju-jitsu, its probably the best grappling discipline but it is so hard to pick up. I couldnt get to grips with it so mainly stuck to the outright MMA which mixes a fair bit in anyway, dont know if i would advise giving ju-jitsu up. But one thing i would say is i really regret giving MMA up.
Never tried eskrima but it looks like good fun, i never did any martial arts where i got to use a weapon.

Without googling it is soyak kali also called kali eskrima or have i just completely made it up? I used to watch a show called kick ass kung fu and they had the guys doing eskrima and it looked pretty awesome.palooka wrote:the escrima is fun, the single stick and double stick work, I'm not keen on the knife stuff, I could see myself clonking someone with a stick I'd I really had to but don't like the thought of using a knife. Did you do any martial arts before you tried MMA or did you go and start learning MMA straight away? I found when i went to do MMA a fair amount of the stuff i had learned from other martial arts was pretty much useless in the sport which was embarrassing and humbling because i had delusions that i would probably walk in there as one of the more skilled fighters. The Judo and Thai Boxing was useful but i did karate for years and it was pretty brushed aside when i started MMA.

I'd done a little boxing as a youth and bits of wing chun but not stuck at it.
The Sayok Kali is an all blade art and is pretty brutal, the navy seals etc are taught it (apparently).
Escrima is an art from the Philippines, there are different styles but can be used with or without weapons.

This is good im going to try and get all the trained fighters on boxrec to enter into a UFC style fight tournament and call it something like The Bo! Rec Spartan Tournament. We'll all fight it out and the winner gets to fight Ronda Rousey, if you win you get the half empty crate of stella i have left over from bonfire night and a runners up medal from a fun run i did at primary school. Are you in???palooka wrote:I'd done a little boxing as a youth and bits of wing chun but not stuck at it.

I've done escrima and panantukan. Great fun. Did a seminar with vunak back in the day. I think training with the knife often leads people to having a false sense of security. Mainly stick to taiji for health (tho I do enjoy pushing hands) and WW2 combatives nowpalooka wrote:the escrima is fun, the single stick and double stick work, I'm not keen on the knife stuff, I could see myself clonking someone with a stick I'd I really had to but don't like the thought of using a knife. The WW2 combative look very effective and I understand what you are saying about the knife stuff. I've seen someone stabbed and its not like a martial arts demonstration.

He did indeed. He's still at it though. I've trained with most of the big names in the past, but then I realised I was training for a fight that will prob never actually come. Figured I'd be better off looking after my health instead. A lot of it was actually feeding a fear rather than making me feel more secure.
The only people I've seen train knife effectively is Lee Morrison. And his first advice would be to leg it sharpish.

I'm lucky to have really only started recently in my mid 40's, I'm not fearing an attack or a fight like some of the younger lads who see threats everywhere. I've not had a fight in years, I'm in no rush to grade and just am happy to bounce along, though the lack of progress in BJJ is a bit frustrating.

I wouldn't mind having a punt at bjj, it's finding time. I'm in the right place for it, got shredder and pouncey living in my home town and they are both hugely into it.palooka wrote:I'm lucky to have really only started recently in my mid 40's, I'm not fearing an attack or a fight like some of the younger lads who see threats everywhere. There's a guy Trevor Birmingham who teaches with them that's always winning tournaments around the world. I've seen him at a few Muay Thai classes I used to go to but never talked BJJ. I'd actually find the first class quite intimidating, something about having to get that close up out of nowhere. He's not like donning the gloves and sparring a few roundsFinn wrote:Both guys are very advanced in it from what i've seen of their posts.Stevieb8006 wrote:I wouldn't mind having a punt at bjj, it's finding time. It does still feel strange, you've got someone's legs wrapped round you or yours around them and you're really up close and personal.Stevieb8006 wrote:I wouldn't mind having a punt at bjj, it's finding time. A few years ago dana white put james toney in will a well established ufc fighter in randy couture, toney had limited mma experience probably thought he would go in with 4oz gloves on and k.o anyone he touched,he got took to the ground and choked out in the first round. Imo this was dana trying to settle the argument of who is better the boxer or the mma fighter, well mr white holly holm just answered your question but then again she was a boxing champ a kick boxing champ and an mma champ from another organisation. You could also argue that it was really judo vs kick boxer. To me ronda rousey looked so weight drained at the weigh in i thought if holm coukd get her into 3rd or 4th rnd she would stop her anyway because of this, her eyes wer grey and after the first round she was blowin out her arse

Yeah, she did look incredibly tired - she hadn't exerted that much energy at that point, and to be honest she hadn't shipped that much punishment either to be looking so ragged. She looked pretty much shattered from the start of the 2nd round.thechump wrote:A few years ago dana white put james toney in will a well established ufc fighter in randy couture, toney had limited mma experience probably thought he would go in with 4oz gloves on and k.o anyone he touched,he got took to the ground and choked out in the first round. It would be interesting to see a rematch. Perhaps she was just totally weight drained.
