Cotto stripped of WBC title
Re: Cotto stripped of WBC title
Why does it look like he's avoiding GGG given the article doesn't tell you why he was stripped, or what rule was allegedly breached?
Re: Cotto stripped of WBC title
Sounds like he hasn't paid the sanctioning fees in order to get stripped, so that he wouldn't have to defend against GGG.
Not saying that's what has happened, just what it looks like from where I'm standing.

Re: Cotto stripped of WBC title
Cotto didn't pay the sanctioning fee. Canelo will still get the belt if he wins though.

If it looks like shit and it smells like shit....
Re: Cotto stripped of WBC title
Good, he's never fought a fight at middleweight.

Cotto has got what he wanted from that title. a huge money clash that no longer needs the title to help sell it
if anything this just adds publicity, gets more people talking and means he doesn't have to get his ass handed to him by GGG if he does manage to win.
Re: Cotto stripped of WBC title
about time cotto never defended his belt at the middle weight limit.
Re: Cotto stripped of WBC title
This has to come down to Cotto not paying the WBC any sanctioning fees by the deadline, right? It looks like Canelo paid his portion and that's why he's able to fight for the title if I understand what's being said online right now. Crazy timing on this one but good. Cotto has always been a finicky entitled bitch.

He should of never had it in the first place and if Canelo wins and demands GGG fights below the limit he should be stripped too.

Re: Cotto stripped of WBC title
cotto has always said emphatically anytime asked that he will vacate rather than fight GGG.davie wrote: means he doesn't have to get his ass handed to him by GGG if he does manage to win.
he was never going to defend it against GGG, anyway. if GGG as mandatory didn't sign off
on the canelo fight, cotto would have vacated. canelo is the only one of the two who has
discussed fighting GGG, albeit hinting at catch weights and such, which he has no way
of enforcing as he already signed a contract to defend againt GGG as his first mandatory.
he can threaten to also vacate and if he really wants a catch weight that might buy him 2lbs.
i was thinking if this one was close, they would just rematch at 154 for the vacant WBC and
forget about GGG, but this probably ends the prospect of that. WBC probably couldn't back
out of this fight at the last minute as i imagine there are contracts between the ppv distributor
and promoters, etc. i think GGG v canelo for 3 major titles (maybe all 4) saturday may 7
could be the biggest fight of 2016, but i have my doubts it will happen.

Re: Cotto stripped of WBC title
All of these belts are a joke when you hit a certain level.
Canelo,Cotto and GGG are at that point now. They are wasting money paying sanctioning fees.
On another note.Neither Cotto or Canelo would fight GGG if they win anyway.Too much risk
not enough reward.

Re: Cotto stripped of WBC title
So, why did Cotto/RocNation pay 800k step aside money to Golovkin instead of just dropping the belt then ?
Re: Cotto stripped of WBC title
Good reason to root for Cotto. I was indifferent until then.

Agreed. The crocked alphabets need the top fighters. Not the other way around.

Go, Cotto !!! Unfortunately, I don't think that he believes that he can win which is why he didn't pay the fees.Tony1244 wrote:Good reason to root for Cotto. I was indifferent until then.

The belt was nice incentive to get Canelo.ikorolev wrote:So, why did Cotto/RocNation pay 800k step aside money to Golovkin instead of just dropping the belt then ?

Re: Cotto stripped of WBC title
I dont understand both of you guys, I know the alphabelt belts are a joke for the past years looking only for ways to make most money maybe excluding the IBF (Mostly the WBC) But when a boxers retires and we look at his record these belts add value to his career.. I mean everyone should aim getting ALL the belts like Hopkins did, it should be the primary goal of every fighter.Tony1244 wrote:tiny_acres wrote:All of these belts are a joke when you hit a certain level.

The belts used to mean something. They have turned into a money making racket for an alphabat crime syndicate. It is legalized extortionAaronide_ger wrote:I dont understand both of you guys, I know the alphabelt belts are a joke for the past years looking only for ways to make most money maybe excluding the IBF (Mostly the WBC) But when a boxers retires and we look at his record these belts add value to his career.. Re: Cotto stripped of WBC title
Cotto was their "champion", but only Alvarez can win the belt, because Cotto won't pay them. If Cotto wins, they'll promote Golovkin and sanction another fight for the "interim" title.
Completely legitimate and reasonable.

Re: Cotto stripped of WBC title
Talk to me again when we see Hassan N'Dam vs. Caleb Truax or something like that and listening to the commentators talk about how this is for a "version of the world title"tiny_acres wrote:I love sarcasmBobbyptsd wrote:Cotto was their "champion", but only Alvarez can win the belt, because Cotto won't pay them. Re: Cotto stripped of WBC title
Now it sounds that they didn't pay to Golovkin. Cotto says that WBC wanted $1.1 mil, including $800k for Golovkin and $300K sanctioning fees. I doubt that he refused to pay 300k but agreed to pay 800k. It could be a scenario everybody (except of course Golovkin) was planning ahead of time. If Cotto refused to pay 800k when Canelo fight was negotiated, then WBC would have to strip him and give the title to Golovkin. Now Canelo will have the title, Cotto will keep the money, and Golovkin is totally screwed ! And WBC may be a part of it !punchoutsb wrote:The belt was nice incentive to get Canelo.ikorolev wrote:So, why did Cotto/RocNation pay 800k step aside money to Golovkin instead of just dropping the belt then ?
