So, why did Cotto/RocNation pay 800k step aside money to Golovkin instead of just dropping the belt then ?

The belt was nice incentive to get Canelo.

Now it sounds that they didn't pay to Golovkin. Cotto says that WBC wanted $1.1 mil, including $800k for Golovkin and $300K sanctioning fees. I doubt that he refused to pay 300k but agreed to pay 800k. It could be a scenario everybody (except of course Golovkin) was planning ahead of time. If Cotto refused to pay 800k when Canelo fight was negotiated, then WBC would have to strip him and give the title to Golovkin. Now Canelo will have the title, Cotto will keep the money, and Golovkin is totally screwed ! And WBC may be a part of it !

two fight each other and both had to agree their first defense would be against GGG.
GGG got lemieux's ibf and $2mil to take it in the meantime to sweaten the deal.
the titles actually charge both fighters and the promoters to sanction the event
so the WBC is getting paid by both golden boy and canelo. cotto was never going
to defend againt GGG anyway so GGG will either fight canelo or someone else
for the wbc, as i don't remember the wbc upgrading anyone from the silver or
interim to their world belt without fighting for it. i know the wba plays a shell
game with their belts and the wbo upgrades people from interim without
fighting. not sure about the ibf. i have a hard time believing cotto signed
an agreement to pay GGG and then not have to pay, no matter what happens
with the WBC. the reason this fight is happening is because cotto had
the wbc and GGG was willing to step aside, so i can't imagine cotto
not directly owing GGG. roc nation has already been involved in shady
stuff with andrade and other fighters, so this may not be the end of it.

This is such a diva play by the most overrated boxer in the history of boxing, Miguel Cotto. Granted, he's probably going to lose this fight because he's lost every big fight he's ever been in albeit the one fight he won against a 40 year old with no knees. But what if he wins? He successfully avoids any collision with GGG and any connection between the two fighters dissolves. Canelo can still win the belt so he can still say that the fight is for the Lineal Middleweight Championship.

This had absolutely NOTHING to do with Cotto not wanting to pay the sanctioning fee of 300k. This is a calculated decision by Cotto to distance himself from anything associated with GGG. Now, he has a built in excuse as to why he can't fight GGG. And if Cotto wins, most people will still recognize him as the lineal champion for a little while longer.

I'll be backing the red gorilla in this one as it's the only way we'll ever see GGG in a big time PPV event. That's if Canelo doesn't find a way out which he's been alluding to in some questionable soundbites. Is there a MAN left in boxing? MY god. All these games to AVOID fighting the best fighter.
