Cotto stands up to WBC

Post by Old bones Ian »

Well said Miguel Cotto, the WBC wanted a ridiculous $1.1 million in step aside and fees from him, here's what Cotto said.

“I am not disappointed by the WBC’s decision,” said Cotto. “It was all about money. The fee for this fight was absurd to me and I prefer to keep the money in my account. I don’t need to pay attention to Oscar De La Hoya’s opinion. He should take care of his own business. And I will take care of mine. I don’t stick my nose in Oscar’s business.

“The organizations wants four champions in every division just to earn a percentage from everybody. Then we have to pay for their mistakes. This is not fair to me. The WBC told me my offer was not reasonable to them. They told me I was not going to be the champion anymore. I don’t need their belt. I have enough belts in my house and with the money I saved, I can buy any belt I want. I can be the champion of whatever I want in my house.”

Cotto has been a great fighter and world champion for over 11 years, he doesn't need anything from the WBC.

De Lay Hoya showed his colours by tweeting 'Cotto a disgrace to the sport'
Cotto's response 'Ask Oscar to pay the $1.1 million to the WBC'

I so want Cotto to win against Canelo

Well done to Cotto. Belts aren't as important to the top guys and why the hell should they pay such an absurd amount to be recognised for their own achievements?

Subtle "Oscar is a degenerate coke addict" reference there from Cotto?

On the other hand it could be a shrewd move from Cotto and will end up working out better for Canelo if he were to win as I doubt any of them fancy fighting GGG who is the number 1 contender for the WBC. Whoever won would've ended up vacating regardless IMO.

Cotto probably sees this as his last fight win or lose so why should he pay any sanctioning fee?

Delehoya a nob as he did exact same thing vs mosely in 2000

Cotto a nob too. It's about money now but vs Martinez was for the belt
WBc helped cotto by sanctioning his fight vs Martinez. Cotto had no probables too paying fee for geale

Reality is he knows he will drop belt after fight so no point wasting his sanctioning fee

Fair play to Cotto. The organisations make a mockery of their own titles to generate extra revenue so its good to see them getting it thrown back in their faces for once whatever Cottos intentions may be. :bag:

Would like to see Cotto beat Canelo but think its unlikely. Can see a late stoppage going in Canelos favour.

Basically all of the bodies need to be very transparent about sanctioning fees, step aside money etc. It seems like these are always made up. I can understand the step aside money being something that is negotiated on a case by case basis but there's no excuse really for sanctioning fees themselves not being made clear in advance.

Totally agree. It seems the bigger the fight the more money they want. It's ridiculous.

I always assumed that sanctioning fees were a set percentage (of the purse?). This fight hardly justifies being sanctioned as for the WBC middleweight title, in any case, as it was made at only 1lb above the super welter
weight limit. Is Cotto confusing the WBC with the WBA, as they seem to be the body with 4 champions at each weight?

I don't know about anybody else but,as far as I am concerned, GGG is the proper World middleweight champion.

Yes Cotto insisting Canelo come in at 155 pretty much disqualified any misguided claim he had to being a "middleweight champ" - not that that would have bothered the WBC bandits, as long as he had coughed up the dough.

If he didn't duck GGG he wouldn't have to pay the $800,000 step aside money anyway, he has got away with 2 voluntaries (forcing Geale into a catchweight), he's part of the problem he wanted to be the middleweight champion but didn't want to face the best middleweight. Why congratulate that behaviour?

Worth reading the below link. Makes you wonder - if GGG doesn't get his step aside money from Cotto - then how can Canelo still become WBC champion if he beats Cotto, who isn't even their champion?

http://ringtv.craveonline.com/news/4043 ... guel-cotto

The WBC typically charges 3% of the fighter purse but, Sulaiman said, because Cotto’s take is so large, the organization would agree to cap the fee, at $300,000. Cotto balked. That inclusion by Cotto of the “step aside” fee has nothing to do with the WBC, Sulaiman said. That money would have been negotiated by Team Cotto, and paid to Gennady Golovkin, as he was the person who’d been stepped aside, so Cotto could instead fight Daniel Geale. “We did nothing wrong, my friend,” Sulaiman told me.

If cotton agreed to pay GGG 800k step aside fee he should cough up the money I think , this really makes me think that cotto will retire after the fight or why would he piss off the wbc so much
