What a joke, 155 Bro.

But boxrec goes by quality of wins. And Canelo's resume trumps GGG's.

No it isn't, it's a fight fought above the weight limit of 154 There isn't an upper weight requirement. As JCS pointed out earlier, over 154 is middleweight.Ricky_ wrote:It's time boxing fans universally declaed catchweight fights as nothing more than exhibition or prizefights.
A middleweight fight is a fight fought at a weight limit of 160, period. Neither Cotto nor Canelo have EVER competed in a middleweight fight.
Good point. Not one of those 4 fights had quality judging. In fact, each fight had at least one ridiculously bad card that in no way reflected what actually happened in the ring.ikorolev wrote:Computerized system can't possibly take into account that Canelo was given gift decisions against Trout and Lara, that the MD loss against Mayweather should have been a wide UD and that yesterday's win should have been a narrow UD or even MD.
Hard to believe a boxing fan doesn't understand how weight classes work.Bobbyptsd wrote:No it isn't, it's a fight fought above the weight limit of 154 There isn't an upper weight requirement. Following your logic, Hopkins often didn't fight at middleweight, Pacqauio doesn't fight in welterweight fights, Robinson was never the middleweight champion, etc.
If two fighters come in at 171 for a light heavy weight fight because they trained hard and are in good shape, it doesn't suddenly become a super middleweight fight. Well, the same applies if they had a limit of 171 in the contract. It's above the super middle limit, it's a light heavyweight fight.
This what the WBC had to say about this, whatever we think about their legitimacy they were ones whose belt was won.Ricky_ wrote: Someone can weigh 140 if they want. There's no requirement to weigh bang on 160 (but thanks for taking a few paragraphs in trying to explain that).
A middleweight bout is a fight with a weight LIMIT of 160lb, ergo, catchweights with limits below 160lb are not middleweight bouts.

@Luigui_90 the rule says everything below 160 is middleweight. If you are very picky you can say 154.1 - 160 is middleweight. We approve of

@Luigui_90 *if the fighters agree in 156 but we'd still sanction it if they weighted more because for us it's below 160
bizarre they said "154.1-160", there's no 'minimum', Cotto weighed in at 153.5.ttornado wrote:This what the WBC had to say about this, whatever we think about their legitimacy they were ones whose belt was won.Ricky_ wrote: Someone can weigh 140 if they want. The 154.1-160 isn't a minimum and maximum, but the possible catchweight range!Ricky_ wrote:

It's absurd, but the WBC doesn't care as long as they are getting paid.
But Canelo has not officially weighed in at Jr Middle in over 2 years.Lennox wrote:In my opinion the Canelo-Cotto fight was at Super-welterweight not Middleweight.
Both fighters should be ranked at Super-welterweight.
The fact the WBC middleweight title was on the line does not matter and it is what the fighters weigh.
If this was a standard fight a boxer weighing 153.5 is assigned to the 154 division. A boxer weighing 155 is also assigned to the 154 division. If you take a view that 155 is strictly middleweight you should then apply the rule consistently and then 95% of fighters would immediately change division.
Sometimes you have to be sensible, Canelo was a bona-fide super-welter pre the fight and it was catchweight.
Ratings say Canelo is No1 at Super-welterweight anyway so Boxrec must have changed it.
I still think it won't happen until the end of 2016 at the earliest.jujigatame wrote:Kind of an odd situation with Canelo now being ranked at 160 and Cotto being ranked at 154.
And good god does Golovkin/Canelo have to happen now. Right now. Right effing now.
You might be right but if so it will be a shame. Golovkin is 33 and would be 34 by the time the fight happens. Canelo is 25. Right now is when they're both closest to their primes.tiny_acres wrote:I still think it won't happen until the end of 2016 at the earliest.jujigatame wrote:Kind of an odd situation with Canelo now being ranked at 160 and Cotto being ranked at 154.
