2015 fighter of year

Post by Cent0089 »

Who would be fighter of year according ring magazine or BWAA? :)
IMO GGG with 3 fights and 3 knockouts against solid oponents deserve it

There is no real stand out this year, I'd go with Gonzalez due to the fact he's gone from hardcore fans favourite fighter to a man who has broken through on HBO...but it's not like last year where you had Inoue (who wasn't even on the BWAA's short list...) really set the world alight

I'd go Gonzalez as he has faced and beaten 2 elite fighters.
The others on the list of mostly only faced 1 or none at all.

Agree, Canelos chances are good + that brutal KO of Kirkland is also something, Roman Gonzales fought in weightclass which is not so popular :(

canelo=overrated

he is a good boxer. but to slow for the elite, thats why he lost to lara ad floyd. thats why he would lose to other elite boxers.

roman on the other hand may not be gary russell fast, but roman is fast and overall a much better boxer than canelo.

Aww... just when you had me convinced. I want to to vote for Rigondeaux, got my pom-poms at the ready.

But since he's not on the list, Golovkin > Roman. Don't get me wrong, I think Roman is top drawer and i understand that he's more fashionable with hardcore fans as he doesn't have the hype-machine behind him like Golovkin... but let's be real.

The only quality opponent Gonzalez faced in 2015 was Viloria, the other one was a very bad opponent in a non title fight and another win against Edgar Sosa who was out of his prime..

Golovkin KO'ed 3 opponents that have never been stopped in world title fights (except Lemieux), Murray was a top5-6 middleweight easy and arguably a more solid opponent than the out of prime sosa (Prime sosa is different ofc). Monroe was a very slick southpaw although with not good experience so I would not rank that as a good opponent but I would say he is decent. And last he UNIFIED against Lemieux something that only Mayweather did in 2015, Easily a top5 Middleweight that would give ANYONE huge problems except GGG.

I believe he deserves the fighter of the year award but mainly because many other fighters did not accomplish that much in 2015 and GGG did just enough.

More than likely they will go away from those who are action figures and look at those who made history and the top two who has made the biggest splash on history this year are Floyd Mayweather Jr and Holly Holm.

Floyd tied Marciano, that alone warrants the designation

Holm defeated the most dominant female in MMA practically pulling off the biggest upset since Buster Douglas sparked Tyson.

No matter how well you think someone fights/produces action, this choice won't come down to who creates excitement, it is all about history for this year's pick.

Floyd Mayweather had 47 fights before this year, why should they award him the fighter of the year award because he reached 49-0? Its Absurd, Fighter of the year is an award for the accomplishments you did in ONE year not because you reached 49-0 in a whole pro career.

Mayweather managed to beat the p4p 2nd best and unify the welterweight division but then went on to fight a guy that was ranked #25 - #30 in the world, an out of prime Berto. I dont think these 2 warrant him a fighter of the year, but you could be right because its Floyd we are talking about.

You need to calm down, no need to get angry about it. I'm just telling you the facts, Floyd had 2 fights this year and he won both of them very easily I might add and one of them put him in the history books forever.

That is a fact and that is history and that means that he will be guaranteed a win and his rightful recognition for his accomplishments.

It's the history part of it that will get him over the hump not the fact that he beat a guy like Berto, all things considered people are talking about it should be GGG and he beat a guy with a record/resume no better than Berto's.

Anyone suggesting that Floyd is even in the discussion for FOY this year should have their access to the site revoked. Again, can you Floyd Swabs please go over to the "BOXERS OF THE PAST" section, thank you. We only discuss active fighters up in here and that's what it's titled " CURRENT SCENE".

GGG extended his historical knockout streak against 3 world class boxers and won an additional strap in 2015 so he's got a really strong case for the FOY award. But, I have to go against my heart on this one and place my vote for Canelo. To me, this award isn't all about wins, losses and knockouts. I think you have to put some weight on what the boxer did for the sport and it's success.

To me, Canelo is the 2015 FOY. He went against his promoter's advice and fought an animal in James Kirkland and in 3 wildly entertaining rounds knocked him out in dramatic fashion with beautiful combo's. Those two did more in less than 6 minutes than Floyd and Manny did in 12 rounds. Then he finished the year off beating Cotto for the lineal MW title in a PPV that was actually worth the money for once. Canelo did more for the sport this year than anyone else. I've got to give it that redheaded Spaniard.

I am calm and was never angry. Floyd fought 2 times, 1 against a #30 in the world and the other one against a p4p #2 fighter. Golovkin fought 3 opponents all of them ranked in every single ORG in the #5 - #10 unified his division by devastating fashion, 3 fights 3 wins 3 KNOCKOUTS. You can make a case about Floyd being FOY but I just dont agree with it

It's ok that you do not agree, besides I'm not making a case for him because it's already made. They will consider history making performances long before they consider beating a bunch of nobodies.

Making History will outweigh all of the things other fighters did.

It would be history if it was 4-5 years ago. This year, it was two senior citizens fighting, one of them also allegedly having an injury.

Agree.

The more i think about it the more i see Canelo taking it.

Should definitely be between Gonzalez, Canelo and GGG.

Mayweather is obviously the choice. He entered the year P4P #1, fought the guy everyone had been demanding he fight and he mopped the floor with him. The Berto win was a meaningless victory lap after a year in which he was the decisive winner of the most important fight the sport had seen since perhaps the 80s. Among the rest of the competition:

2) Tyson Fury: Beat Wladimir Klitschko, which up until the cards were read was something that most of boxing fandom seemed to think was virtually impossible. Unfortunately for Tyson, everyone is just saying Wladimir Klitschko was washed up. That's not fair to him when he was a prime wrecking machine 12 months before.

3) Roman Gonzalez: Very good year for him, but not his best year. He did finally get HBO to televise his fights which is frankly insulting to think it took this long.

4) Canelo Alvarez: Kirkland was a gimmie and the only people who thought otherwise were morons. Cotto was kinda a gimmie too that was made easier by Miguel alienating himself from the WBC when they were supplying judges. What a dummy. But again, the fight too bad to happen in 2013 was a great fight in 2015. Boxing fans are complete idiots who deserved to be separated from their money and Canelo's "I'm Mexican so give me money!" marketing has worked astonishingly. Bravo. Can't wait for another year of Caneloweight fights.

5) GGG: He unified and won some fights. Whoopee. Middleweight is a lousy division. HBO hyped David Lemieux as a potential threat (he never was either), didn't televise his best win, and the PPV ended up bombing. Monroe is a nobody. Murray is a gatekeeper now at 168 where he lost to old man Abraham. It isn't GGG's fault that no one fights him, but I'm not gonna give a guy "fighter of the year" awards for fighting ESPN2 talent. Never.

After that, I'd rank guys as Kovalev, Bradley, Thurman, Porter, and Povetkin. Everyone else either wasted their year totally or doesn't deserve to be in the convo.

EDIT: Actually, DeGale belongs on this list at #4. He came to the US and Canada, fought legit guys, and won.
