They weren't ready for the purse bid. And they admitted they couldn't win. And Kovalev had "options" with HBO but no contract but then they resigned him to a contract so it had to be on HBO.Horse wrote:Kovalev pulled out.
Duvas can't and won't risk their last meal ticket. Without Kovalev, they have nothing.

Re: Aduckis Chickenson
Kovalev made the smart business move.
If he fought Stevenson on Showtime/PBC,
HBO would have gotten mad.
If he lost, he would have had no home and no multi-fight contract.
However, if he won, Kovalev would be the king of the boxing world right now.
Wish he would've taken the risk.
What does it say about him that he didn't though?

Re: Aduckis Chickenson
Depends. PBC might have overpaid and he might have gotten 3-4 million. He won't sniff 3-4 million in his next 4 fights combined. Even if he lost, he'd have had better take home.BAD INTENTIONS wrote:Kovalev made the smart business move.

Credible sources have reported that he earned over $2m for the first bout with Pascal (a big local attraction and of course his next opponent), while he made $750k against Mohammedi; times the lower figure by 4 and you've got $3m, which I consider a very realistic amount for him to 'sniff' over his next 3-4 bouts, especially when he's set to fight Pascal and HBO are pushing for a Ward bout in late 2016.

Re: Aduckis Chickenson
You know what, you're right. If he can get both fights done, he's got a great chance of making that same amount of money. In truth though, if Ward comes to fight and is on his game, Kovalev leaves without a ton of belts. Kovalev should beat Stevenson IMO, which is what makes this so frustrating.crusader wrote:Based on?zorndeslammes wrote:He won't sniff 3-4 million in his next 4 fights combined.BAD INTENTIONS wrote:Kovalev made the smart business move.

Re: Aduckis Chickenson
Stevenson has a right to his opinion.
And if someone did all kinds of maneuvering to force a purse bid, then wound up backing out of
the purse bid they themselves forced, I might think that there was some yellow in the picture as well.
Yes, Kovalev is signed with HBO...but if HBO refuses to bid on the fight, who can HBO be upset with?
I assume his contract is similar to Golovkin's, meaning not EVERY fight the guy has must be aired by HBO.
Bottom line is this. He could have fought on PBC, on free television
and I dont think it would have necessarily violated his contract with HBO.
And if it was in conflict he could have asked HBO's permission- but nothing like that was
even thought of, much less attempted. Kovalev could be saying HBO wouldn't let him fight elsewhere.
But, he can't because he and Duva never asked because they never WANTED the fight-
at least that is what I am thinking if I am Adonis.

Who is Ward ? Isn't that guy a lightweight or something ?zorndeslammes wrote:In truth though, if Ward comes to fight and is on his game, Kovalev leaves without a ton of belts.
More serious question: when did Ward beat somebody of Kovalev's skill level, power or size ?

Re: Aduckis Chickenson
I think Ward's wins over Kessler and Froch in terms of "talent" are certainly comparable. Size? That's different obviously. I don't feel comfortable picking Ward either given his lack of activity in years. But I think the better question is, "Who has Kovalev beaten at Ward's level of talent and athleticism?" and the answer is obviously no one. His premier wins are a possibly past prime Pascal and 49 year old Bernard Hopkins.

Pascal clearly had his moments against Kovalev.
And even in his destruction of BHop, there were flaws uncovered in Sergei's game.
Ward is even more athletic than Pascal (assuming he can shake off the rust) and defensively
is a younger, faster, stronger and harder punching version of Hopkins.
This will not be the walkover for Kovalev some would have you believe.
And if Ward shows well in the fights before the showdown, don't be shocked if he is the favorite.

Re: Aduckis Chickenson
Froch and Kessler are really good fighters but Kovalev is most likely great. I don't like the comparison because it's pretty unfair. Kovalev is not even passed the halfway point in his career and he's getting better every fight. GGG is better comparison than Froch and Kessler.zorndeslammes wrote:I think Ward's wins over Kessler and Froch in terms of "talent" are certainly comparable. Size? That's different obviously. Aduckis looked so uncomfortable in this exchange with Kovalev. So uncomfortable and awkward. Kovalev looks like he doesnt have a care in the world.
Re: Aduckis Chickenson
If the Ward v Kovalev fight takes place inside of the first 5/6 months of 2016 it leaves Stevenson sitting out there if you ask me.
Regardless who wins should it take place pushes any talk of Adonis to the backburner I would have thought.

What does all the name calling matter?
Stevenson, clearly against the broadcast/company prompt, said he wants to make the fight happen.
He said that his promoter will make the fight happen.
Now, it's up to HBO and Haymon to come together like they did before, and make the fight.

Re: Aduckis Chickenson
Cmon man. Adonis is FORCED to comment because everyone keeps asking. It's easy to say you want a fight when you know damn well the networks will just block it anyway. And he can use that as a copout. "Well I want it but they won't let me!"
Sure. Sure you do.
