Is Errol Spence Jr Ready????
Is Errol Spence Jr Ready????
I know that people have been clamoring over this kid for over a year now but I have made a habit of not biting on the hype until the boxer steps up to a higher level of opposition. Undefeated records these days are not worth the paper they are written on. But this past weekend, we saw two of the mostly highly touted young boxers take that step up and there's hardly any conversation about it due to that mess of a heavyweight clash we had to sit through.
One of those boxers was Amir Imam, who accepted a fight with Adrian Granados as a "stay busy" fight in preparation for his mandatory title shot against for Viktor Postol for the WBC strap. Everything looked great for Imam after the first round knockdown of Granados but proceeded to lose every one of the next rounds until he was stopped by Granados in the 8th. Was he overhyped or unprepared? Doesn't matter. He wasn't as good as we all thought he was or maybe could be honestly. It was a disaster for Imam and now already has to work on his second career before the first one even got going.
Then there's Errol Spence Jr. His opponent, Alejandro Barrera is not cupcake and seemed to outweigh Spence Jr by at least 15lbs in the ring. We saw Spence Jr. get hit like we've never seen him get hit before but we saw him weather the storm and knock Barrera out in the 5th. Barrera had never even been down in 29 fights. I think we can now get a little more excited about this kid's future. How good do you think this kid can be? How long before he gets that shot and against whom?

Re: Is Errol Spence Jr Ready????
i think yes. he is no elite but neither are thurman or brook, timmy and porter. all good b level boxer, some b, some b+
Re: Is Errol Spence Jr Ready????
Barrera is a journeyman. Spence Jr may in fact be ready, but we will only know when he faces a top 10 opponent.
Re: Is Errol Spence Jr Ready????
Spence is ready for the top guys, the better the opponent the better he will look. He's still not that far into his career, but he does need the top competition to keep that learning curve going up. Time for a name opponent.
Re: Is Errol Spence Jr Ready????
I agree with you, SFW. But I have a feeling this kid will struggle with the same thing GGG's been dealing with in terms of the bigger names doing everything they can not to get in the ring with him. At some point he's got be a little more brash and REALLY call someone out in a way that paints them into a corner. He's been love tapping Thurman's name around but he's got to get after it a little more aggressively. Otherwise, no ones signing on to fight this kid for awhile.SFW wrote:Spence is ready for the top guys, the better the opponent the better he will look. canlo wants to go in the ring with ggg, aside from him there are not much big names available.
anybody is gonne fight spence, ecspecialy when he makes a name for himself and becomes ppv
Re: Is Errol Spence Jr Ready????
Spence is definitely ready for a step up, and a top 10 guy. I would love to see him against Khan.
Re: Is Errol Spence Jr Ready????
Agreed. A lefty with that kind of skill, temperament, athletic ability, he is a stylistic nightmare for a lot of guys nobody will be jumping to face that. His body work is great too, the IQ is evident he can think very well in the ring. Eventually he'll get a big fight, and shine. The sooner the better.caldo2025 wrote:I agree with you, SFW. I think Chaves would be a good test for him, although honestly I think he's ready for guys like Garcia and Peterson, if not Khan and Porter.
That said, I doubt they push him that fast. I bet his next fight is against one of these guys:
Guerrero
Martinez
Bizier
Berto
Alexander
Basically one of the B-list welterweights in the PBC stable.

Re: Is Errol Spence Jr Ready????
The only thing that really concerned me regarding him is that he is seemingly overconfident in his ability to take a shot or shots and he cannot afford to let some of these bigger fighters he mentioned tee off on him like that.
Personally I can see he has the skills to beat the likes of Khan, Alexander, Porter and maybe Bradley (due to his height advantage) but I think they should give him a few more tests against the likes of Broner before they start moving him up the food chain.

Re: Is Errol Spence Jr Ready????
First of all Broner is a 140 lber. Spence knocked him silly in sparring, verified by Spence himself. The fighters you mentioned are top guys in welterweight. He wouldn't beat them because of height advantage. Spence has the skills and power to legitimately challenge any welterweight. Thurman is already running from both Spence and Porter. Khan will retire before stepping in with Spence, just watch. Khan wants a big payday withUndefeated49-0 wrote:The only thing that really concerned me regarding him is that he is seemingly overconfident in his ability to take a shot or shots and he cannot afford to let some of these bigger fighters he mentioned tee off on him like that.

Brook or Pac, then retire.

Thanks but you're not telling me anything that I didn't already know about Broner's weight/weight class, we do agree that he can beat some of the same guys, but it is likely there will be many fighters that will duck him because they do not want to be the one to get exposed by him. Especially Thurman, Khan and him are running around the WW division acting as if every fighter is afraid to fight them but neither of them are mentioning Spence.
There's a reason for that, real recognize real.
