Welterweights: Emile Griffith vs Thomas Hearns

Post by elmersalsa »

This is an intriguing matchup for me. Two top ten welterweight greats going at it. How do you see it?

Hitman in 1 devastating round.

Griffith would've pressure him and make a fight on the inside for a UD win. At welterweight, I pick Griffith. But, at super welterweight and above, I pick the Hitman

Griffith for me.

Hearns was a killer, but if you were tough & put him under pressure, he was beatable.

Griffith was tough enough to take Hearns' best & skilful enough to pressure him.

I'd begrudgingly agree. But Emile would need the fight to be made at 15 rounds.

To me, both were special fighters. One a borderline and possible top 20 ATG in Emile Griffith, and the other, a borderline and possible top 50 ATG in Thomas Hearns.

A fight at 147 would be a great fight. But, above 147? To me, it would not be a fair fight for Emile. That Hitman above 147 was way more devastating as a puncher, and was much stronger.

I don't see Emile beating Hearns. Hearns will have a huge size (height) advantage and Emile will pay a hefty price trying to get inside of Hearns. Emile will have some success but not enough. Hearns speed and power will be too much for Emile to overcome. Hearns wins this by TKO or decision.

I think Griffith may be one of the very few tough enough to get this job done

The great Emile Griffith was mentally and physically strong at welterweight. So was the great Kid Gavilan. Two special fighters that never got the credit they deserved. Those two were exceptional and gifted fighters

Great fight with two of my favourite fighters.

Styles make fights and I'd fancy Hearns by stoppage.
