Sky sports gloves off
Giving it its own topic, so hopefully someone with a single brain cell over there, like Ed Robinson for instance, can step in & quietly do away with this hybrid abomination.
I've been reading the reviews on the latest batch - Eubank AJ etc and they sound as godawful as to be expected.... I can't even watch them they are so toe curlingly awful.
Get rid of them immediately, they do nothing. Instead put together a half hour professional piece like American TV and HBO have been doing for the last 20 years, on and off.
A reporter, not Johnny Nelson God forbid ( or maybe even he could handle this, with plenty of editing, seeing as I don't think we're ever going to bloody get rid of him ) just spends some time with each fighter, training, talking ,15 minutes each, talking about the upcoming - fight that will do. Now I think they do something like this on those 24/7 programs, but for gods sake no need to stretch them out to 8 hours - a half hour decent promo piece will do.

Re: Sky sports gloves off
I don't think there's an interviewer out there who could do it, but something akin to when Jeremy Paxman interviewed the Prime Minister candidates. Just sit them down, really, really push them on things, see who can handle the pressure. Go into techniques and the why and why not of things. If you have to piss them off or rattle them a bit then great.
If I was 12-years old or something I'd love these Gloves Are Off programmes but they're just boring now. Rarely does anything of interest be said. It's all just...
JN: "So challenger, what makes you think you'll win?
CHAL: "I'm quicker, faster, stronger, got a great gameplan and training hard"
JN: "Wow, sounds like you've got a plan. Champion, what do you think of that?"
CHAMP: "I'm the champion, I'm the champion, I've got the belts"
CHAL: "Yeah well we'll see about that won't we. I've got strength and power etc etc"
JN: "WOW, THIS IS EXPLOSIVE FIGHTING TALK!"
And repeat for half an hour. Snooze. It's pantomime.

I think the show will only ever be good as the guests.
If there is manufactured or lukewarm beef - then it comes across that way and fails.
Froch vs Groves was mint. It was real and everyone was hanging on every word and scoring whom came out better. Unfortunately when it's not real, then it loses the magic. I know the Wembley build-up set the bar high , so I suppose it's always going to be challenging to come close to that again.

Exactly this, it should be saved for the rights where it really will make good tv.G0mez wrote:I think the show will only ever be good as the guests.

Curious how Quigg Frampton will go
Re: Sky sports gloves off
Frampton and Quigg seem to have a lot of respect for each other but Frampton has looked pretty pissed off recently so could be interesting. They should do one with the McGuigans and Hearn and Galagher and see who the most irritating is!!!! Probably end in a draw or split decision win for Hearn n Galagher!craig_minter wrote:Exactly this, it should be saved for the rights where it really will make good tv.G0mez wrote:I think the show will only ever be good as the guests.

Awkward to watch. Wish they just did an All Access show similar to in America. Miles better viewing

Show some AJ jogging at night in slow motion with Danny Dyer doing the narration role of Liev Schreiber.
The camera pans slowly as AJ wipes his brow with a carefully placed FCUK towel, before reaching for his LA FITNESS protein drink and MUSCLEFOOD sandwich.

Re: Sky sports gloves off
Don't Sky already do a version of 24/7 with the "Behind the ropes"?

Re: Sky sports gloves off
These days the only time Sky actually give any coverage to boxing is when there's a PPV to sell, otherwise it's just stuffed online somewhere.
Re: Sky sports gloves off
Typical sky, ripped of hbo's face off and failed at making it anywhere near as good. Sadly bn have done it too. I just wish there was some form of innovation at Sky. They don't seem to know how to break the mold.
Re: Sky sports gloves off
Went through Sky Sports listings to see what kind of build up they're rolling out this week. Not only are they showing countdown shows for AJ v Whyte, they're doing AJ's knockouts, old Froch fights, old Mitchell fights and more. So frustrating that boxing gets ignored on Sky Sports until they want even more of your money then all of a sudden it's on multiple times a day.
Re: Sky sports gloves off
I think its the standard of fighter, nothing to do with Nelson and the production.
The USA version is great cos it is the likes of Cotto vs Margarito, Haye vs Klitchsko etc.
Sky's are also okay when its Groves vs DeGale - Clev vs Bellew was acceptable but felt a bit contrived.... "I'm an athletic cruiserweight" - post fight "I was never a cruiserweight" (yes, it still grates).
But these two have wide points decision (Eubank vs Sullivan) and early KO (Joshua vs Whyte) all over them - hard to hype these when they look levels apart.

Re: Sky sports gloves off
I think the show smacks of desperation and obviously takes boxing further down the WWE route. Clearly a show for casuals and it shows.

Re: Sky sports gloves off
Just watched the Eubank Spike one, Eubank speaks very well in the public eye, Spike didn't really say anything at all.
Re: Sky sports gloves off
It is a case of understanding when to do it and when not to.
AJ Vs Whyte was ridiculous. Whyte struggles to speak at the best of times, let alone when in an interview situation. I do generally like Nelson, but he is appalling at doing it. I am ok with the way that Max Kellerman, he at least asks some interesting questions. I think as a production, this format really should be used to hype up the biggest fights where there may be a bit of needle between the fighters. People who are more casual fans have no idea about the dislike between Spike and Eubank Jr, so why would they bother watching it.

Re: Sky sports gloves off
They work in situations where your intrigued by the fight, cotto v canelo, haye v wlad, froch v groves.
but the latest one was just dillian whyte slagging Joshua off, calling him fake etc and shots of Joshua looking menacingly.
That is what you get when you get a PPV that really isn't a PPV. I wonder if allegedly have done one for Lee v BJS

Did Dillian Whyte borrow his suit from Barry Venison or Mark Hately?
