Our society may be more accepting of homosexuality than it was, but it can still be difficult for young people to come to terms with their sexuality. While homosexuals are no longer persecuted by the offices of state (and that's what they used to be) I still believe that there are sections of society that hold steadfast to outdated views and where, even in 2015, it's difficult to be gay.

So, it's unfortunate that Tyson Fury is homophobic. It would be better if he wasn't.

That said, heavyweight champion of the world isn't an elected position. So, The Board (to use a colloquialism) can fornicate off. I have never understood policing the character of fighters. Boxing, stripped down to its core, is the sport of punching muthafuckers in the face. I have never seen fighting professionally as a privilege that should only be afforded to “moral” men. If you have the ability to fight professionally then you should be able to fight professionally. Whether you're a deeply religious school teacher or some kind of half feral thug shouldn't come into it.

The Board setting themselves up as moral arbitrators has always galled me. Regulate safety and the conduct of fighters within the ring by all means. fornicate off with everything else though.

Fighters are just that. Fighters. Some are good men. Some are bad men. Most are somewhere in between.

Oliver Holt shouldn't have to censor himself. Tyson said what he said. He wasn't misquoted; The Mail have released the audio. Threatening Holt was stupid. If you have the resources there are ways to intimidate the press. Threatening to beat up journalists isn't one of them. If anything it makes things worse.

However, Holt railing against and moralising about Tyson's homophobia while working for the Daily Mail is paradoxical. They might not (these days, at least) be as explicit as Tyson was but The Mail with their subtle drip, drip of hate do more to foster bigotry, discrimination and disharmony than anyone. So, Holt comes across like an employee of a libor rate fixing bank writing an article bemoaning dishonesty among the small folk without mentioning the elephant in the room. I get that Holt can't mention his employer, and I doubt he himself is homophobic, but his not doing so makes his moralising ring false and hollow.

Fury's views shouldn't preclude him form earning a living. Lest you end up with an absurd situation like the UFC are in at the moment where everyone has to pretend that Jon Jones isn't the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion of the world because he was “bad” and “bad” people don't deserve to be champions.

Plus, people are more than one thing. I can disagree with Fury's views on homosexuals and still be a fan of him as a fighter and enjoy most of his antics. Holt seems to infer that if you are a fan of Fury's that you think his views on homosexuality shouldn't have been reported. He also draws a false equivalency between Fury, Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather. Tyson Fury saying mean words is not the same as rape or serious, repeated acts of domestic violence. It's just not.

Lots of slagging off of the board here. They do a pretty good job running a sewer of a sport in this country. More power to them.

I understand where some of the comments are coming from, but like most things in life this issue is not black and white.

We all (ok most of us) self regulate what we say in the sense that we are slightly different depending on who we are speaking to - this isn't a case of "not being yourself" or something, just more being a member of society who respects others.

I am a big believer in freedom of speech, but with that freedom does come responsibility.

What I mean is that there are some things that I would say to my mate that I wouldn't say to my mum, or wouldn't say (or say differently) to my wife or son etc. just as I might say something to a co-worker that I wouldn't say to my boss.

I also believe that those who don't think the same are either lying, are trying to be Macho or are just plain old fashioned thick (don't have a go - I am just exercising my freedom of speech).

I do agree with this line. But it is not about freedom of speech why I wouldn't say certain things.
It is out of respect.I have several friends who are big time Christian goody two shoes types.
I definately would not be talking smack to them out of respect for their beliefs.
I also would not say certain things to my wife for fear of hurting her feelings or upsetting her.

But if an asshole wants to say something that I do not agree with or find offensive it is on him.It is his choice.

The assad situation has made the west look like idiots. They have tried to paint assad as some evil monster. A member of my family worked with assad when he was a doctor in London and we're quiet friendly with him and said he was a complete gentleman. He obviously upset the west in some shape or form becuase cameron and Obama taught it a good idea to fund and arm isis to try and get rid of him.

What I find interesting is that it is boxing fans and people who are defending Tyson and not being outraged by what he has been saying whereas most other people from with no connection to boxing and general non boxing fans have a huge issue with it.

Does that mean we are biased? Does it mean they are boxing haters?

Are we as hardcore boxing fans being influenced by our love of this sport, as people admiring his sporting accomplishment? I wonder what the opinion of people on this forum would be if it was a Prince Patel making the comments.

What did he actually say? I missed this.

When I turned on Channel 5 on Saturday, he was banging on about wanting to see a woman in a dress, or something. Was it about that?

She has a very good point there! Plus let's be honest, all this talk of role models, as much as I love boxing, should kids role models really be people whose job is to knock fuxk out of people for a living?
Sportsmen/women in general are terrible role models, I've never boxed but I used to race motorbikes at national level and it's full of egos, backstabbers, cheats, people willing to sell their own mothers if it will help them advance etc. It's a pit of vipers, I suspect the likes of boxing, football, rugby etc. are no different.

Tyson Fury has dismissed criticism of his inclusion on the shortlist for the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year award and described those who have signed a petition calling for his removal as “50,000 wankers”.

Go Fury! Do we really want a society full of robots and parrots repeating the same 'inoffensive' prepared media savvy dross? It'll be a soulless place like North Korea.

You don't have to agree with what he says, but as long as hes not actively calling for people's death then let him say what he wants. Let the individual decide if they like him, dont blacklist him from a competition he deserves to win through achievement.

Exactly. It's already happened to a few sportsmen. Andy Murray won't give anything away in the media these days, Rory McIlroy is the same as is any other high profile person who has had their fingers burned by the media. The difference is that Fury (and his camp) don't give a monkeys. There's nobody around him saying calm down or don't do this or that like most other support teams would.

If it was Prince Patel everyone would be slagging him off. You're right with the insinuation of loyalty clouding people's judgement. The fact that a number of people have accused Oliver Holt of lying despite audio evidence to the contrary is evidence of that.

The Board are right to investigate as they'll want to demonstrate that the sport isn't homophobic. It won't be a massive deal. Probably a small fine and 'don't be such an idiot next time'. As someone else said, you'd expect exactly the same from any other sports governing body.

Fury responds to the furore:

World heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has again gone on the offensive after being accused of making homophobic and sexist comments, calling the thousands of people who have signed a petition demanding his removal from the BBC Sports Personality of the Year shortlist "50,000 w-----s".

Fury, who stunned Wladimir Klitschko to win the WBA, IBF and WBO belts last weekend, insists he would be the only worthy winner even if he has little interest in the award.

In a thinly-veiled swipe at Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton and Davis Cup winner Andy Murray, Fury told IFL TV: "I can honestly say I'm not really interested in winning BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

"I know for a million per cent I've got more personality in the end of my little finger than the whole of the nomination group put together. And everybody knows that. Everybody in the country knows that.

"I've got more personality in my little toe than they've all got put together so if it comes to personality there's only one winner. If it comes to sporting achievements there's only one winner.

"What personality does it take to drive a car around a track 100 times or hit a ball back and forth. That's not very personality is it?"

When questioned about the petition demanding his removal from the nominations, Fury added: "50,000 w----s. That's what I say about them. If anybody else wants to add to them they can add to their numbers can't they."

The 27-year-old also reiterated his views on women after earlier saying that Olympic champion Jessica Ennis-Hill "slaps up good" and "looks good in a dress", adding that "a woman's best place is in the kitchen and on her back".

He said in the latest interview: "I'm a little bit backward. I didn't really go to school. Which part of a woman looks good in a dress is sexist?

"Or was it about the cooking and cleaning? I stand up for my beliefs. My wife's there [standing alongside Fury]. Her job is cooking and cleaning and looking after these kids. That's it.

"She does get to make some decisions. What she's going to cook me for tea in a bit when I get home. That's the decisions what she gets to make. That's my beliefs, just like I believe in Lord Jesus Christ as my lord and saviour and if anyone wants to dispute that let them do it. Am I bothered? No.

"My belief is that my wife should be at home looking after my kids and cooking and cleaning. She's a very privileged woman to have a husband like me. Not everyone's in her position but the ones who are are very lucky. That's my opinion."

Asked if he was a role model, he said: "People should look up to me. Young kids. I am a good role model. I'll show them how men should really be. Real men. And kids can take note from that. I am a good role model. Lots of kids look up to me.

"This week has taught me that when you're at the top of the world everybody wants to bring you down. But they're never going to do it."

The heavyweight champion, who is due to face Klitschko in a rematch next year, also insisted he was unfazed by the criticism this week, telling the doubters to "suck my balls".

"I'm not really interested to be honest," he said. "They can say what they want about me but they can't knock my achievement. I beat the man who nobody can beat. So until someone can go in and beat him again then they can suck my balls.

"I am Tyson Fury, Gypsy King, nuff said."
