Kell Brook - cherry picker?

Post by ALI »

Is Brooks first 3 defences of a world title setting an all time record low for British world champions quality of oponents in the first defences of their title. Mandatories or not, i honestly cant remember such a poor run. Dan, Gavin and now set to fight Bizier who lost twice to Dan, thats horrible, none deserve to be anywhere near a world title. For a man with such skill who talks the game up so well to be in a division so deep with talent, he should be ashamed.

Is he setting an all time record low for first defences?

Not really Brooks fault though is it?

The Gavin fight was just a payday/marking time fight. The other 2 are mandatory defences. He fights them or gets stripped. Really not sure what the IBF are playing at. Absolutely shocking standards for mandatory challengers.

I always thought that the mandatory challengers were tough customers and the voluntary defences easier.

Gavin was a marking time fight for what, his next terrible mandatory defence?

Three piss poor defences on the trot and you say he's blameless, pull the other one. Your probably lapping up Hearns carrot of a Wembley/Khan fight in the summer - just a shame Khan knows eff all about it!

So he should vacate?

The only way he gets an exception is a unification fight and we all know that's not gonna happen.

If Pacquiao chooses Crawford or Bradley I can't see Khan not taking the Brook fight. I'm not remotely interested in watching Brook dismantle Bizier but sometimes these things happen in boxing.

This just goes to show what a corrupt sport boxing is.

Mandatory - the 3 boxers named are not even ranked in the World top 20 !

I thought you only had to face a mandatory every 3 fights.

Ionut Dan Ion - Mandatory
Frankie Gavin - Voluntary

he surely has another voluntary defence in the bank before taking another mandatory?

They seem to make it up as they go along. Wouldn't mind if the mandatory challengers were of an acceptable standard. Porter, Khan and Spence all ranked below Bizier.

Not if he waits for a thousand year. There is an allotted time for voluntary defenses. IBF should be applauded for enforcing mandatories. If not that Brook would not ever get his title shot in a first place.

Brook while waiting for Khan is staying too inactive. This way at least we get to see him fight someone.

Fair enough.

But i'll wait until the IBF start choosing someone worthwhile to be their mandatory contenders before I start giving them a pat on the back.

Jojo Dan and Bizier are woeful choices as supposedly the second best fighter in the division, when you consider the depth of the welterweight ranks

For me its the shit that Hearn come up with regarding Brook beating anyone then serving up shit. I understand that a couple are mandatories & the obligation has to be met, but prior to this Brook was matched with Chaves who lets be fair is another knock over job!
As for Gavin that was just a money spinner against someone who didn't deserve the shot either.

His career has drifted into an irrelevant oblivion, just as it did when he was with Warren. Load of talent but there's something missing with this guy. I'll get interested again when he fights someone half decent or signs with Al Haymon but until then...

It's one of the downsides of holding the IBF strap.

They have always put forward mediocre challengers - sometimes a challenger will get soundly beaten, then 18 months later will get another shot.

The IBF are also very quick to strip champions too if they don't participate in the bum fights they order purse bids for.

I'm a big fan of Brook. The guy has bags of talent but like most fans I want to see him in with the big names. The Khan fight would be my number one choice but in failing that Thurman would be a cracker of a scrap. Thurman seems quite keen to test himself so I reckon he'd be up for taking on Brook. Wouldn't mind seeing him flatten Danny Garcia either. The mandatory situation with the IBF is just a nuisance especially when guys like Dan and Bizier are the number one contenders!

Brook should just dump the IBF belt and base himself in the US instead of wasting his career at home fighting guys like Dan/Bizier/Gavin.

whats the point of having the belt if he is fighting that level of oppo

people will say it gives him some leverage for big fights... well they don't seem to be happening... it will be 2 years before he fights a live body - at least

The problem is that because a mandatory challenger only gets 20% of the purse for a title challenge, only boxers who couldn't negotiate a better deal are interested. Hence someone like Khan or Bradley or any decent name in the US would never take one, because why would they only take 20% of a purse bid against Brook?

Yup I remember the South African merry go round for the IBF Superfeatherweight title a few years back. Absolute joke.

He was due to fight Chaves but got injured. Now the IBF have thrown a spanner in the works. It's unfortunate, but not really Brooks' fault.

If they will strip Fury they'll strip Brook. The IBF don't even seem embarrassed about it.

Al Haymon has the money and the answers. Simply cut out and ignore the WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO and put on matches as far as possible with the best meeting the best until the public come to their senses and realise that they have been subject of a huge con job for decades.
On this website we all know, for example , that the world heavyweight champion is now Tyson Fury. Wilder is a potential challenger only. The middleweight champion is Golovkin, Alvarez is only a potential challenger etc etc.
Brook is only a contender, a good one , granted, but a contender nevertheless.

This. All fighters should just ignore the sanctioning bodies and fight each other. The fans will pay for good fights, not for 'world titles' that actually aren't between the best in the world.

Not sure how he is a Cherry Picker...

August 2014 - Won Title
September 2014 - Injured from stabbing in Tenerife
March 2015 - After recovering from injury fights his mandatory - JoJo Dan
May 2015 - Gets in a payday voluntary in Frankie Gavin (Payday)
October 2015 - Pulls out of a voluntary fight with Diego Chaves due to rib injury.
2016 - Mandatory Kevin Bizier
2016 - Amir Khan?

I agree the IBF mandate guys that are not world level fighters as they are snubbed by the bigger names in the division. The Chaves fight for me was a decent scrap which Kell would have won. Unless he vacates he has to fight these guys the IBF put in front of him. As Matchroom has stated this will more than likely be in the USA or Canada as it does not sell as well in the UK.

Managers/promoters can have a really difficult job at times. We have to assume that Matchroom are contracted to get Brook fighting so many times a year, and if he's not fighting he's not earning. Matchroom and Brook are at a level now where they expect big money each time he appears, and they also have a fair idea when possible fights simply wouldn't sell for a variety of reasons. The boxing world have got themselves into a situation that unless a TV fight is for a world title they believe the public won't buy it. Previously people like Brook while awaiting a title shot , or a final eliminator could fight for a British or European title, or even a 10 rounder against an import, but they've diminished these type of fights .
They then have to arrange poor quality ' world ' title fights they hope will be acceptable, and hope the public don't ask too many questions. They then have the TV channel promote the fight by producing absolute nonsense , like the Joshua farce this week.
There is an answer of course. Prevent managers being promoters. In this way the manager can deal with several promoters to get the best deal for their fighter.

Don't let the truth get in the way of the monthly Kell bashing.

Hayman's mismatches are up there with some of the worst in modern times, Garcia vs Salka or the world champion Wilder's entire career bar 1 fight, the list goes on.
