Jacobs seems to be finally fulfilling his massive early potential. Yes, it is important not to go overboard on one display but I hope Jacobs can get the big fights from that.

I didn't see anything in the Cotto fight to make me think Alvarez is a real threat to GGG - definately the most viable challenger, but cannot see what he brings to win - other than possibly getting GGG tired and doing what Murray tried to do. Indeed, I still feel Cotto's superior handspeed might give GGG more problems than Alvarez (although I favour GGG heavily in that one).

However, I would like to see Jacobs vs Alvarez and the winner face GGG.

I think Eubank Jnr, for all his talent, is a backward step for Jacobs now.

Those were the most respectful post bout interviews I have ever seen, I'm happy for Jacobs and also want Quillan to come back again. Good show for Jacobs and Peter didn't take a prolonged beating. Classy pair of fighters :TU:

So, after issues with weight and a lacklustre performance against Andy Lee, Quillin gets wiped out in 1 by the ordinary WBC champion.

Was Quillin always just a hype job or has he dropped off the cliff?

I liked the look of him a couple years back and thought he was probably no2 in the division when Martinez chucked it and left GGG in charge. Although some questioned his level of competition, and rightly so, he certainly looked the part before and during his 4 fight WBO reign

It now looks as if he can't compete with fairly average world level competition (let's be honest, no one is going to start calling Lee or Jacobs 'elite').

So has he dipped a long way (and if so, why?)
Or was he never really that good?

Well, well ,well i didnt expect that,i stayed up and watched undercard last night and went to bed before this started, the commentery thought stoppage was premature and i wouldve liked to have seen Quillin take a knee but i cant fault the ref for stepping in,if Peter hadnt took a knee then 100% Jacobs would have hurt him even worse

I dont think Quillin knew much about what was going on but maybe experience couldve told him to take a count to gather his senses and stop the ref from waving it off but you know what boxers are like with bravado and toughness, fair play to Qullin for not going down because Daniel is a murderous puncher and threw the sink at him, credit to Jacobs for taking his chance and not letting him off hook, both guys carried themselves superbly

Quillen can step up to 168 and make good money, and likely iwn a belt, probably the best option for him after this.

I don't think he was overhyped, i think similar to Andy Lee he has flaws in his game that are likely to get exposed at the top level now and then....other than GGG all the contenders have these and when they meet its a case of whose are more prevalent in the fight. So happens that Quillens vulnerabilities were more prevalent than Jacobs, which was the shock itself.

With Jacobs, is it possible he was in poor health even prior to the Pirog fight, he's shown some lovely form lately. I'd favour him to beat BJS and Eubank jr with ease, and have him as a slight favourite over Lee at this point (Lee's power is his equaliser)

Good stoppage by the ref.

Both great gentleman who were a credit to the sport with their comments.

Neither better than Golovkin but both would fancy their chances against anyone else in the division.

I expect Jacobs to have a huge fight next and Quillin to have two comeback fights in 2016.

The winner of Lee-Saunders would be a great fight for Jacobs but unlikely to happen as Jacobs not being full champion the WBO won't recognise it.
I see if lee wins

Lee-Golovkin
Jacobs- Lemiux
Quillin-Macklin
Alvarez-Andrade

If BJS wins I see

BJS-Eubank Jr
Jacobs-Lemiux
Quillin-Lee
Golovkin-Alvarez

Agree boxes came over excellently in the interviews, really classy, I'll be rooting for both of them going forward. I thought the referee panicked a bit, because I assumed he could have given a standing 8 count, but maybe that's not in the rules for whatever belt they were fighting for....

No I just read somewhere that he could have given a standing 8 count, in which case he definitely panicked, I mean so early in a big fight why didn't he do that ? Sure he'd lost his equilibrium, but that usually doesn't last long ...and if the referee had been doing his job, give the count, THEN make the decision.
If you've got the option for an 8 count, use it - he is not gaining anything by waving it off eight seconds early, and not giving the man a chance to come back.

Quillin didn't complain about the stoppage too much which showed he probably still didn't know what was going on.

It's simple.

Question: Was he in no position to defend himself?

Answer: No.

Result: Correct stoppage. Hell, even Quillin says the ref was right to stop the fight.

First round stoppages can often be misleading, wth an example being Jhonny Gonzalez blasting out then P4P ranked Mares even though he looked mediocre in his bouts shortly before (down against and clearly defeated by Ponce; getting dropped by and going to war with jouryneman Eusebio Osejo) and subsequently lost two of his next three bouts, including a defeat at the hands of middling Jonathan Oquendo, who looked like crap last night. Despite that overall line of form some lazy-minded commentators have concluded that Gary Russell, because he beat Gonzalez, would therefore beat Lomachenko in a rematch, even though the latter vastly different attributes than Jhonny and handily beat Russell two fights before

It was a great result for Jacobs (the first time he's shown major power against a good opponent) but I don't think he's any better than the fighter who was dropped by Mora or looked lackluster against Truax. I also believe that he still has significant chin issues, having been stopped and dropped multiple times as an amateur, being hurt twice by blown-up Ishe Smith who was in the middle of a three fight losing streak, being flattened by average hitting Pirog, and being put on his ass by one shot from fairly light hitting Mora.

That said, he's got a good mix of speed and power, and will be a handful for pretty much any middleweight to beat, though I think still believe that GGG gives us flashbacks of the Pirog bout.

It looked as if the ref was going to give a standing 8 and then he called it off. Peter would most likely have been knocked out clean if Danny had landed on target again. Jacobs has very good power, both men can continue from it and Jacobs did show he was certainly up there. Quillan looked more hurt than he's been v Andy Lee though Lee dropped him, the first big punch Jacobs landed was a big shot, it sounded horrible.

Yes he was in big trouble alright, but my question is, if it's in the rules, what's a standing 8 count for ?

One of the uses is if a boxer should have gone down, but was supported by the ropes.

I'm not sure about that re Jacobs - he was hyped as something a bit special - okay, he got derailed by Pirog - but even the best have occassionally lost when coming up. I think he has the talent to be classed as "Elite" and at least give Alvarez a real tough fight.

Whether Jacobs is elite or not, how has Quillin seemingly fallen so far?
Because, in my view, Quillin was better than being wiped out like that, even against a very good fighter.
And he didn't really look up for it vs Lee either and Andy Lee is certainly no elite level fighter. He's a decent world champion at best and someone who has struggled against fringe guys and pulled himself through with that right hand on more than one occasion.

Yes good point Davie, although I do wonder if Quillan was it a little Lacy/Berto like in the hyping up. Good solid world class fighter but heavily hyped as the next big thing. His run as champion were not against the very very best in the division. I agree if he was as good as he was hyped then he should have beaten Lee.

WBA, WBO, IBF and WBC rules state that in title fights you cannot give a standing 8 count so the place you read was wrong. Legitimate stoppage

Yeah you're right, in that case good stoppage as Pete's eyeballs were in orbit.

I like Quillin, so was yelling for him to take a knee after he shipped that pile driver so early, but he was too buzzed to realize - a shame, as if he'd composed himself, he could well have landed a counter on the possibly fragile Jacobs and turned it into a classic.
