Boxing is in me, it's not necessarily a good thing, it I not a great way to make a living but as I said typically it is for people who don't have better options.
I'm someone who has taken part, not just an armchair fan.
Most people who fight prob have something a bit wrong with them. I remember a conversation with Ed Robinson who had other options but who fought professionally and we agreed that fighters need to have a bit of crazy in them!

Boxing might have been a good way out of poverty in the 1920s or something, but that sort of talk seems like a load of rubbish nowadays.

People have plenty of options, no one is forced into boxing.

There aren't many sports which you can actually make a living from, when I was racing bikes as a kid I was told that I need to focus on a proper career because unless I became a world champion there was no way I'd make a living from it which is why most of them are tradesmen during the week. I know boxers who all have jobs because they make jack sh*t from fighting, rugby players and golfers who all have office jobs mon-fri 9-5. I think it's only a tiny percentage of sportsmen who actually make a living from there chosen sport and an even smaller percentage who make enough to never work again.

Of course nobody is forced but it does offer people a step up whether it is to chase a dream or whether they are doing the circuit. The mentality of a person who competes is not normal, what average person would get in a ring for a few pieces of silver.

Surely they have a job other than boxing though? A career as a professional sportsman generally isn't that long, 20-25 years depending on the sport and that takes you to what age? 41? Another 25 years to go yet before retirement unless of course you're lucky enough to have been in that tiny percentage who become millionaires.

I remember my old amateur trainer (much missed) related to me a story about a conversation he had with Danny watts. He asked Dannyhow much he got a fight. Danny said a grand.my trainer said something along the lines of, 'so you've had 8 fights, for 8 grand.....after paying manager, trainer, taxes etc you'd be left with 4 grand for risking your health and training hundreds of hours... what's the point of that? Have you thought of knocking it on the head?'

Danny retired after that and later became David Hayes boyfriend...err I mean bodyguard. And that puts it into perspective. Unless you want to be cannon fodder or have a good chance of being signed by a big promoter, and making it big don't turn pro.

I think Coco has disproved his point. As only the very few can make a living just from boxing for most it must be and way to top up your earnings and reach for the (almost) impossible.
The choice isn't boxing over another job it's as well as. It's no different from anyone chasing a sporting dream as far as i can see.

I'm inclined to defend to Guardian sometimes but not in this case. It's such a perfect stereotypical Guardian parody I do wonder if it's designed as online clickbait and wouldn't be seen in the print version.

She needs to salvage her and The Guardian's damaged accountability and credibility, and in future ensure she does not tar everybody with the same brush.

boxing is a way out of a society that see's people going off the rails, introduces them into some kind of discipline and gives them a goal to achieve.

I got into boxing because when I was about 10 I was jumped and beat up by 2 older kids, my mums fella at the time decided I needed to learn to protect myself. I trained in the same gym as tony oakey but gradually faded away to concentrate on football and ended up being offered a trial with a non league academy who were producing players often, got accepted but chose the forces.

I don't think boxing exploits anything, society can be cruel. some people decide to go down the boxing route, others the football route, others just stay doing what they do. how many stories have you read of boxing turning someones life around? from amatuers to world champions. when people are lost they will find solace in something and for some its boxing, for others its acting.

this woman needs to be taken to one of the amateur gyms like repton,heart of Portsmouth,the rotunda to see what work boxing is doing with people who live in these working class cities and how they are making themselves better people
