I was viewing the record and this jumped out at me:
10/12/1991 James Toney 160 1/2 KO4 Francesco Dell'Aquila 158 1/2
IBF Middleweight Title
Is this a typo? Did Toney really weigh 160 1/2 and get credit for a middleweight title defense? Did he weigh in at 160 1/2 but then come back and make weight? And if he did, shouldn't 160 be listed to prevent any confusion? I would appreciate any insight into this fight. I couldn't find the AP story on it.
Actually he was only ¼ lb. over the weight limit and the supervisor let the fight go on which isn’t unusual because if
Dell'Aquila won he would have qualified to win the title.
What is unusual is that traditionally the title should have been declared vacant because Toney didn’t make the weight.
Thanks for the clarification. I was wondering the same thing about why a title defense is recorded instead of it being a non-title fight considering that Toney won.
