Boxers In Prison.

The Gary Delaney thread got me to thinking. As we all know over the years many well known Boxers have served time in prison, here in the UK and in other countrys. Terry Marsh, Robbie Regan, Nicky Booth and Paul Sykes spring to mind in the UK.

Now my question is does the fact that these fighters are known Boxers make their time in prison easier or harder?

Does their 'Hardman' reputation make them a target for others trying to gain a tough reputation? Or are they respected and treated well by the other inmates?

Or is the fact they are professional fighters of no relevence in Prison?

Or does it all depend on how the fighter conducts himself ets?

Any stories or information fight fans?

Pat Barrat was in local prison, i know he just wanted to keep his head down and do the time.

Not a British story, but I remember a tale of an incarcerated Tyson.

Apparently those prisoners who were actually bothered about such things split up on to two sides - pro and anti-Mike.

The supposedly top hard man on the anti side was getting really pissed off with Tyson. It all kicked off between the two sides one Christmas, when Tyson bought everyone a load of presents. The hard man thought he was showing off, etc and it all went off.

Tyson took a few out and absolutely sparked the leading guy. The melee immediately quietened down as the carnage was surveyed and Tyson said to one and all:

"Merry Christmas! Anyone want some snacks?"

I'd say whether it's easier or harder depends on two things: your size and/or skill.

I can't see many people messin' with Ibeabuchi!

Do you mean Jason Cook (credit card fraud)? Or did Nicky do time also?

Craig Winter (former brit title challenger) went inside. As far as im aware he got alright in there, you can train yoursef inside but there is no "boxing trainer" teaching people. Craig said he had no problem finding sparring partners but the equipment was a bit rubbish so the inmates can buy their own. I think British Prisons have a far better segregation system than their american counterparts, he pretty much got on with most people without having any trouble.

yeah he is out and trying to get back in the ring... but i dont think the BBBC will licence him so no promoter has picked him up.....

Not sure i agree with that decision... on one hand, he was clearly a dangerous man out of the ring but served his time he also always played by the rules in the ring (unlike for example Mike Tyson who regularly broke the rules in the ring yet still was allowed to fight here twice)

Also by stopping his only realistic form of income by not giving him a licence this may push him back into the serious crime again...

But his appearance back in the ring will bring bad publicity to a sport which already receives enough. I dont know the ins and outs of this case (but it was quite a brutal one) so I wont comment, but generically speaking I can understand the BBBoC not handing out licences to certain individuals. If an individual isnt responsible enough to make a living without crime then thats something for the parole board to look at.

Both assaults were on staff of Slug and Lettuce pubs in central London in a bid to make them hand over keys to the bar tills, the Old Bailey was told.

Dunstan, of Battersea, south London, admitted charges of false imprisonment, blackmail and aggravated burglary.

I agree with much of what you are saying Wales, BUT BUT BUT..... The BBBC let Tyson fight over here.... this is a guy who was doing armed robbery at 13.... served time for rape, served time for assaulting someone in a road rage incident, bit someones ear off in the ring.. tried to break Bothas arm... knocked out Orlin Norris after the bell.......

so as always with the BBBC where is the consistency????

If Dunstan was a big money making machine or had the right promoter in the UK he would get his licence

I remember reading another quote from Tyson where he said he was 'terrified for his life' when in jail.

Wonder which if any, (or both) are true?

I recall reading an interview with Tyson just after he got out of jail on the rape charge where he stated that his biggest fear in jail was (If I recall right).....

"Somebody running a train over me"

Which I am lead to understand is prison jargon for gang rape when 5, 10, 15 inmates all take their turn holding a guy down and then all raping him.
