best collection of victories: 1965-2015

Post by Ezzard »

Who has the best set of scalps in the last 50 years?

No need to be too fussy on the dates. Example - Dick Tiger's wins can be mentioned despite most of them being pre-1965...Ray Robinson's can't despite fighting as late as 1965.

Interesting topic. I will take a crack at it.

1. Ali - (Best were against Patterson, Frazier, Foreman, Norton.)
2. Leonard- (Benitez, Duran, Hearns, Hagler)
3. Holyfield (Qawi, Bowe, Tyson)
4. Spinks (Qawi, Mustafa Muhammad, Holmes)
5. Hearns (Cuevas, Duran, Benitez)
6. Tiger (Giardello, Torres, Benvenuti)
7. Duran (Leonard, Buchanan, DeJesus)
8. Sanchez (Lopez, Gomez, Nelson)
9. Griffith (Benvenuti, Tiger)
10. Pac (Barrera, Morales, Marquez)

Honorable Mention:
Benitez, Ortiz,Barrera, Morales, Frazier, Foreman,Chavez, Arguello.
I'm sure someone is missing.

Ali

Liston x2
Frazier x2
Foreman
Norton x2
Young
Quarry x2
Ellis

I appreciate a couple of those decisions raise a few eyebrows but they were close enough no matter what you think.

That's a great collection of wins for the great Emile Griffith. Very underrated boxer that never got the credit he deserves. He also beat Benny Paret, Gaspar Ortega, Denny Moyer, Florentino Fernandez, and Jorge Jose Fernandez. He fought the very best of his era.

Initially what came to my mind was Salvador Sanchez. As someone already pointed out:

And when you consider that he did it within the period of 24 months, it really makes it all the more incredible.

My second thought moves on to Roy Jones Jr (again as someone else pointed out)

I'd probably throw Reggie Johnson & John Ruiz (for the WBA Heavyweight crown) and it makes for some compelling reading.

Always thought Arguello's was interesting. Given that Olivares was starting to slide, there really is no huge "scalp" here. However, a lot of very good ones:

Olivares
Escalera
Limon
Chacon
Navarette
Boza Edwards
Castillo
Ramirez
Watt
Mancini

Only Ramirez and Watt went the distance.

In today's era those guys you mention would have been world title holders and multi world title holders. He was exceptional.

This must be a joke? You seriously believe Mayweather's carefully selected victims earn him a place among these men? Do you even know who most of these fighters are?

Sets a bad precedent when you start rewarding fighters for risk averse, PR managed careers.

Not the victories, but the manner of them for Mike Tyson.

Spinks KO1
Holmes KO4
