Aww man, just hurt your own credibility.Holmes beat Norton in June, when Leon Spinks was the Lineal champion. Ali regained the title in September and later retired. Damn man, careless error, especially on such well known fights and dates. Most with an interest in boxing know Norton v Holmes and both Spinks v Ali fights were in 1978. And this very site of boxrec gives the exact dates!
SteveO wrote: For example if Ali was still the lineal champion when his boxing license was restored on June 28th 1970 then his comback contests agains Jerry Quarry and Oscar Bonavena would be recognised as world title fights.....and they're not.
However, that is a good point. They are acknowledged to be non-title fights, although Ali said he was the "peoples champion" he did actually contest the NABF title in one of those fights, something I do not believe was possible if he was actually the lineal champion

Ooops! Of course you are both right Toby and Tuan-Jim. Very careless error on my part.
I'll try and double check my facts in future before I post.

Stephen, having posted on here since 2001 I can concede you have a record of very near 100% accuracy. I doff my cap to your services to the forum, but at the same time revel in my greatest and most glorious victory.

That made me laugh.
Congratulations on your glorious victory :TU:
But do you concede that Wladimir Klitschko was the lineal world heavyweight champion? (you gotta let me have a little victory).

With profound and fathomless dislike for Wladimir Klitschko, I concede that after 36 minutes of wrestling Povetkin a substantial amount of boxing fans recognised him as lineal king. And now I must go somewhere and vomit.

a prime lennox would have cut down fury like a tree, just like a prime wladimir would have done in my eyes.

he beat the dominate champion because he was the younger man fighting someone who's best was about 7-8yrs ago.

fair play to fury his achievement is fantastic but he really isn't on the same level as a prime lewis, would a developmental lewis get put down by a blown up cruiserweight like cunningham

I never said Mike Tyson wasn't an all-time great, but to say Lennox Lewis defeated the same Mike Tyson who defeated the likes of Spinks, Holmes and others.... would be a complete and utter lie.... He defeated a man who admitted that he did not train one iota, who was only doing it for the money, etc. a complete and utter shell who was worse off than Joe Louis and Jim Jefferies were in their comebacks. Now, the fact that Tyson LOST to a man like Buster Douglas in his "prime" years, does make one question whether Tyson was a top ten all-time great and to that I will argue that he wasn't. He's somewhere in the top fifteen or twenty. I would argue that Vladimir Klitschko is more suited to the top ten, than Mike Tyson, because his loss to Purrity and Sanders was in his developmental and green years. He did not hit his stride until defeating Chris Byrd by KO and rising off the canvas against Peter and then becoming this dominate champion in the vein of Holmes, Louis, Moore, etc.

You bring up the fact Fury was downed by a cruiserweight (possibly one of the top five in the divisions history), but that's the issue. It was a flash knockdown, and he got back up to win and on a knockout. One can clearly see that Fury from the Cunningham fight, is not the same man that defeated Chisora in the rematch so soundly and defeated Klitschko rather easily. Despite his weaknesses early on, he still won fights. Unlike Lewis, who lost as an established champion to relative nobodies like McCall and Rahman (they were fringe contenders at best at the time he fought them first).

The difference between someone like Fury, and someone like Grant.... is depth, and clear evolution as a fighter as time progressed.... Grant, in essence, was the same fighter he was from the start... the best men that he defeated on the way up were men who were at one time contenders but well passed it at the stage that he fought them (Savarese, Gonzalez, Golota) and the rest were journeymen that did not press the issue, which is why Grant was so easily destroyed by Lewis, because he was never tested and he was one dimensional. Fury is anything but one dimensional.

Golota, you bring up, and he's a very interesting case indeed. He was just coming off back to back DQ losses to Riddick Bowe (who clearly was well passed it and fading fast). Golota from that time onward became one of the most inconsistent fighters in boxing history. And maybe, just maybe, when one looks at the record.... prior to Bowe (who was just stripped of the WBO title) Golota seemed to of been a man who feasted on journeymen. The only man he defeated with a winning record, worth anything, was Danell Nicholson. Outside of that, he was fighting men with 16-9-0, 7-14-3, 4-10-0 records. Maybe, just maybe, the Bowe fights were hyped more than they should. Why? Because the fact of business is.... everytime Golota stepped up.... he lost miserably. Lewis stopped him in one round. Tyson (completely shot and washed up) also stopped him. John Ruiz decisioned him, and Lamon Brewster annihilated him. The best performance of his career, was the disputed draw against Chris Byrd and one can argue it was because Byrd was so incredibly small in comparison.

You bring up how Lewis avenged the losses to McCall and Rahman, and he should get credit for doing so.... however.... that still doesnt take away ONE IOTA from the fact that they were both men that he should have never lost to in the first place. Prime years. And this is also why, like Mike Tyson, I do not believe he fits in the top ten. Just outside of it. Had the losses came when he was green, and learning on the job.... it would have been excusable.

Again, Tyson was completely shot. Lewis may as well have been fighting a punching bag. Tyson wasn't even a willing participant in that fight. Rahman was a man he should never have lost to, but he did, and the rematch just showed what we already know: the first loss should never of happened (but it did). Tua.... simply couldn't.... why? He was 5'9" fighting a man taller than his billed height of 6'5" with an 85" reach. How can you possibly hit something like that? You can't. It is more to Tua's credit, that he took that many power shots, than it is Lewis "adapting" when its a simple matter of physics.

As far as Klitschko is concerned.... for the first time in his life (with the exception of Mercer and the Zev) he was forced into fighting toe to toe.... because he was fighting a man of equal height, weight, and capability. The fight, of course, had Klitschko ahead on the cards. Both men were tired and could have went at any time at its conclusion. And it was stopped due to a horrible cut. It was an exciting fight, yes. But it is certainly no fight to point to how well Lewis can adapt, or even his greatness, because it showed his vulnerabilities more than his strengths.
you do make me smile,

So because a fighter loses in there prime they cannot be considered an all time great??? but because fury got knocked down v Cunningham and got up makes him a better fighter??? Tyson would have murdered fury in his green years and most certainly in his prime and probably up to the holyfield fights.

Ive defended fury for a long time as an articulate charasmatic talker but his v recent antics

A) the stupid sexist remarks that made him sound like a dumb ccunt
B) the bullying and threats to any1 who disagrees with him
C) the schizo antics with lewis (i mean even during the in ring apology to lewis he was treating lewis like shit ignoring him and the bit where he asked lennox to hold his water bottle

These recent things, suggest a mentally ill guy.

If lewis was still 45 as opposed to 51 id still take him to crush fury.

I did that once with Pernell Whitaker and Julio Cesar Chavez in a 'fights we'd like to see' thread on there

Credit to the guys, they never shot me down instantly, they played it out a bit...

"I'd love to see that one, good clash of styles, think the result might be close"

"Bet there'd be some kind of questionable decision"

Eventually someone put me out of my misery and told me the fight had happened and the circumstances

Whats forgotten is fury was actually seriously hurt by the single purposeful right hand wlad threw in the 12th.im pretty sure wlad will come out aggressive next time and yes thats breaking the habit of a career and knock fury out.
As for what the faster, far more explosive and powerpunching lennox would have done, just see the spectacular ko"s and stoppages of botha, bruno, golota, tyson, briggs, and grant to see what kind of ko u will see of fury

Class.

As he says, there's nothing Tyson has done, or is likely to do in all honesty, that Lennox needs to be jealous. A past prime Lennox at 37, went to war with a prime Vitali K, and stopped him with a brutal cut, after landing some absolutely humdingers on him, whilst Fury danced around for 12 rounds against a 40 year old Wlad, to win in an absolute snorefest.
for me Lennox vs Vitali was the last 'Great' Heavyweight fight. The class, bravery and brutality was top notch.
Absolutely !!! You will be hard pressed to find a better more exciting fight than Lewis/Klitschko in the heavyweight division since, there was more entertainment and brutal exchanges in the 6 or so rounds it lasted than in the 11 rounds of his brothers fight with Anthony Joshua (I know I jumped forward a couple of years since the date of this original post, AJ and Wlad wouldn't fight for around 2 years at the point you made your comment about Lewis' fight with Vitali) but in retrospect from this point 2 years on AJ vs Wlad is the only fight that could even begin to rival it in terms of excitement and competitiveness, the fact everyone has since been banging on about how great the AJ and Wlad fight was, and that it was almost twice the duration, just goes to show how spectacular a contest Lennox vs Vitali was ! Awesome awesome fight ! Lives long in the memory !

I did - and not a single reliable source. All blogs and boxing forums. Nothing of any authority.

Thought you were a historian, Steveo. No historian could recognise such a weak pairing as lineal. How ye disappoint me.
What official authority would you like?
Throughout history when a reigning world champion retires, the #1 and #2 contenders fight to create a new lineage. This is exactly what happened with Klitschko and Povetkin.
You don't have to like it or agree with it but it is a fact enshrined in boxing history.
Much like when Vitali Klitschko retired to concentrate on politics in his native Ukraine, the top two fighters rated by the WBC (Vitali held the WBC title, after beating David Haye Wladimir unified the WBA, WBO, and IBF titles) Bermaine Stiverne and Chris Arreola fought for the WBC, of course if Wlad had been the one to retire it would have been number one and two as recognised by the WBA, WBO, and IBF (not exactly sure how all three of those alphabet bodies would have come to an agreement on who would be made one and two, this is where politics destroys boxing !) but the principle is the same.
