Funny thing is, a lot of old timers used to do long walks interspersed with sprints.
I think one of the reasons long runs were favoured was it was believed it kept the weight down, though evidence suggests long runs are an inefficient way of maintaining weight, and they burn calories far too slowly, and produce high levels of stress hormone Cortisol which actually promotes weight gain and many other problems.
There's probably a mental element of long slogs however, that helps a fighter cope with feelings of fatigue, though that is probably just as achievable doing sprint work, which is absolutely hellacious.
