Kovalev To Pascal: Thank Referee For Saving Your Life

Kovalev To Pascal: Thank Referee For Saving Your Life

One of the central themes of the January 30th rematch between WBA/IBF/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev and former champion Jean Pascal is that Pascal had some early success in the fight and that he was stopped on his feet. Pascal still believes that the fight was stopped prematurely.

Kovalev on the other hand thinks the Haitian-Canadian should thank the referee for letting him survive to fight another day.

"I think he should thank Luis Pabon for saving his life so that he can still see this world around him," cracked Kovalev.

The Russian power puncher believes his power was starting to take a toll on his opponent and that the punches were beginning to accumulate. He said that most of his opponents just aren't the same anymore after they face him and pointed out a few examples.

"Usually fighters who fight with me - where are they? (Blake) Caparello, Cedric Agnew, where are they? I didn't finish my job and my goal in the last fight because the referee saved his health. It was the right stoppage. Throughout the fight he took a lot of hard punches. One shot in the 10th or 11th fight could have finished him. The ref saved him. People can die from one punch or from taking a lot of shots and losing a lot of blood. Accumulating punches can destroy the brain," Kovalev stated.

"From when the fight starts till it's over you don't think about this. After the fight you think about these things. In the fight you have the adrenaline and you don't feel any pain. After the fight is when you feel sore. After the fight I am sure he felt a lot of pain in his head and in his body. Even me, I felt it."

When asked to rate Pascal's punching power, Kovalev simply said, "He has a hard punch but not as hard as me."

A Pascal win is all that Andre Ward asked for Christmas.

Very true. Pascal sure does have some nuggets though, ha? Imagine taking a beating like that and then demanding a rematch? I like his style, but he really could die in this second fight.

I think his brains still scrambled to be wanting this rematch so bad, I like Pascal but I don't see how this fight will be any different, funnier things have happened I guess and he packs a decent punch. Kovalev to finish him even quicker this time perhaps, let's hope the ref isn't swayed to let Pascal take more of a beating than he needs to. His corner should have thrown in the towel as soon as he was jelly walking back to the ropes when the ref was talking to Kovalev anyway.

Is Roy still teaching/training Pascal these days?
If so, we might get to see Jean exhibit Roy's "fainting goat" fight-ending defense, where he blocks a punch with his head and immediately goes totally stiff, falling over comically like one of those fainting goats. That'd be interesting.
It's sad to see Roy still fighting and doing his fainting goat thing, but I wouldn't mind seeing Pascal try it.
:TU:

Roy was able to do a lot of things technically wrong without suffering for it during his prime, due to his supreme athleticism.
This is why once he lost a step, he's looked terrible. Guys like Hopkins, who have perfected the fundamentals, can still rest on those and fight at a high level once age catches up.

So, for my money, the only thing Roy can show Pascal, is how to be right at the end of, and in the sweet spot, of his opponents punches.
Roy can't really teach the thing that made him great.

No, now he is trained by Roach, so it would likely be face down like Pac against Marquez :)

This rematch is pointless. Why is it happening? Was there something about a rematch in the contract? The fight that should be happening is Kovalev vs Stevenson but the latter wants no part of that.

You got to think Pascal has learned something from the first fight and will try a couple of new things out.
But this Russian can hit and he's patient and works at his own pace and doesn't rush things, perhaps trying to outbox him might be the way to go because I doubt Jean will out muscle Kovalev.
