Billy Graham vs. Pernell Whitaker?

Post by The Keed »

At 147, who wins?

Graham in his prime had the better legs, Whitaker may have had the better upper body movement.

Although this may upset the Whitaker fans, I think I'd go with Graham here, if for no other reason than he has the better wins on his resume. He beat Kid Gavilan, Carmen Basilio, and Joey Giardello, and got a draw with Basilio in Basilio's hometown and lost two other very close decisions (split decisions?) to Giardello... and the Basilio and Giardello fights came when Graham was past his prime. I suppose if you thought Whitaker won his fight with DeLaHoya, that might be roughly the equivalent to one of these wins, but I didn't even think Whitaker won that (I gave it to Hoya by at least 2 points, if not more).

Your thoughts?

I'll go with Graham,Hawk. You make a very good case. i always thought of Graham as kind of a smaller Gene Tunney...terrific condition and chin (never knocked off his feet) excellent boxer, and a real student of styles.
Not a knockout puncher, but hit stiffly enough to keep you honest.
