allegedly Vs Sky coverage
Re: allegedly Vs Sky coverage
Frustrating personally much prefer the coverage and punditry on allegedly. Sky just have so much more capability to ram their fights down all the casual fans throats and they fall for it. Every 1/2 hour the week of the Joshua ppv theres some other report or bit of coverage. All the casuals lap it up and then don't realise about this fight a week later.

Aye Barrie Jones provides great analysis through the fights the other night about how the boxers feet should be positioned at certain points in order to open up the target and evade returns. Then last night I watched a recording of Mayweather vs Marquez (which incidentally I'd forgotten how good a display that was from Mayweather) and Jim Watt was just giving it the same old analysis and script. I like Jim Watt and don't wish to join the list of folk bashing him but we have heard it all from him and he doesn't tell you anything you don't know.

I cannot stand Lillis. He may know his onions about boxing but how he presents himself is super annoying. He lacks polish although I do prefer a lack of polish to a lack of knowledge.Black Sam Bellamy wrote:The gulf in quality between broadcasters like Steve Lillis and Barry Jones compared with the likes of Jim Watt and Johnny Nelson was never more evident last night. But did you know about "Arrm punchez" before Jim?

Total contradiction. You don't like him for the things you like.tobyh5 wrote:I cannot stand Lillis. He may know his onions about boxing but how he presents himself is super annoying. Sums up B-O-X-N-A-T-I-O-N compared with Sky for me perfectly thisThereByTheGrace wrote:Yeah total boxing no bullshit! Cant argue with the show tonight

Can't really knock the promoter/matchmaking for the poor fight though sometimes it just happens that way think everyone agrees going in it was great 50/50 matchmaking. I actually found it quite enjoyable was more of an intriguing fight but still kept me glued.veriton wrote:what an awful, disappointing fight though. and that in-house tv commentary BS phrase of "showing each other too much respect" is what we used to just call "scared of getting hit".
lee and saunders were negative to the extreme, aside from the third round when BJS got the knockdowns out of nowhere and then was even more cautious in the fourth (did he even throw a punch in that round?!)
i thought it was going to be a great fight and had been looking forward to it for months but then that happened zzzzzzzzzzzzz
allegedly coverage was really good though, stuck with it almost from the start and plenty of entertainment before the big snoozer at the end. catteral fight was good, evans/ stalker too, smith/kelly was decent enough as far as mismatches go but best of the show (for me) has to be langford..the force has awakened in that boy!
Agreed re Langford watched him for a while now (localish lad) was massively impressed with his shot selection and patience when first saw him and now hes starting to plant his feet more. Great talent, just hope they don't rush him into something he may not be ready for.
Re: allegedly Vs Sky coverage
Just rejoined Sky due to a very cheap deal for 12 months after 2/3 years away. I'm not actually all that excited by seeing there boxing coverage again though other than DeGale and Brook who are cracking boxers IMO.
More to do with the coverage than anything else though. Constant adverts, embarrassing fawning, McCrorys tired cliques, turd polishing salesman patter, Bellew and Smith, Hearn's hair and every single atom of Adam Smith's personality, voice, commentary, apperance, wrist position, growling, existence will be a test of character!

His boxing matters shows are very good.
His knowledge is good and his enthusiasm comes across very well.
Barry Jones by far the best analysis on British tv.
The boxers they use are good aswell. Conlan and Langford I thought were very good doing the presenting and analysis.
Re: allegedly Vs Sky coverage
Barry Jones is a great analyst, he's very honest and says it as it is without prejudice. Alex Steedman is very good too and demonstrates a great knowledge.
I also like the presence of Jim Rosenthal, it reminds me of the days ITV used to show boxing on a Saturday night and I'm glad Enzo's back doing a bit.
Not a big fan of Charlie, no matter how fit she is.

Crap main event. But more worrying is the trend now starting of slapped up tarts commentating and interviewing boxers.

Peter McDonagh's shirts alone are usually worth the price of subscription
Re: allegedly Vs Sky coverage
true, it was an excellent fight on paper and both of them had talked a good game, but they suffered "paralysis by analysis" on the night. people have said the same about fury v klitschko but fury was really up against it that night so his tactics were spot on. lee and saunders were evenly matched, both were pale shadows of their best selves.ste1983 wrote:Can't really knock the promoter/matchmaking for the poor fight though sometimes it just happens that way think everyone agrees going in it was great 50/50 matchmaking. yes, i think langford needs to be guided along properly but, as he said on the night, he wont turn a world title shot down. one more year, three good fights and i think he will be ready for it.

Re: allegedly Vs Sky coverage
Sky's coverage is too slick.....apart from Jonny Nelson who has to be the WORST tv presenter in the entire world!!
allegedly' presentation is like that of a sweaty gym environment, with cracks here and there, creaky wooden flooring and blood stained canvases. It suits Boxing down to the ground. Sky's is like that of a nice modern Health Club, and it doesn't suit. Steve Bunce isn't really an Anchor Man, but I much prefer listening to him ramble on, than Nelson or Adam "Mr. Teleprompter/Mr. Robotic" Smith. allegedly is a raw production, and I love it!

Agree 100%. Steadman is a pro. Jones is boxing's Gary Neville.PredatorHayds wrote:Alex Steadman is absolute quality.Black Sam Bellamy wrote:The gulf in quality between broadcasters like Steve Lillis and Barry Jones compared with the likes of Jim Watt and Johnny Nelson was never more evident last night. Re: allegedly Vs Sky coverage
I must say I'm with the general jist here, allegedly is miles better, much better analysis, much less arse licking and hyping people for no reason other than to toe the party line.
It's all very contrived and planned on Sky, boxer X is meant to win and is the 'made' fighter so BIG HIM UP -
I also agree that the quality of general presenting on Sky is super shit for how much money they actually must have compared to BN. Johnny Nelson is obviously an ok chap but as main presenter i just think he's so poor, he stumbles over his words so much that sometimes you're not even sure what he was meant to be saying.
allegedly have got a solid set of pundits who don't get drawn into any stupid hype (usually) and who don't dumb it down too much for the casuals, I like Charlie interviewing the boxers, she's actually not too bad knowledge-wise and adds a touch of glamour to proceedings without being just some bimbo, I crave her.

Re: allegedly Vs Sky coverage
yeah i was unsure about that charlie lass at first but she has grown on me, she does a fair old job and asks good questions. i wish she would dress a bit more conservatively though cos she looks like a tart sometimes and it takes my mind off the fights (one dress with a zip all the way up the front still keeps me going on cold nights)
lillis knows his stuff, barry jones is grade a, lillis is a likeable lump (my kids think he is hilarious), steadman is fair enough but sometimes gives it a bit of the big i am. of the active boxers, langford is a cracking pundit, love enzo he always has something interesting to say and gary lockett usually gets it spot on. ovill mckenzie cant stop smiling, which brightens it up. the whole allegedly feels like you're in a pub with a bunch of real boxing fans, whereas sky feel more impersonal. allegedly reminds of those footy fanzines that you could get around 1990, by the fans for the fans and not taking themselves too seriously.
terry flanagan struggles like hell on tv outside the ring but there is an excellent interview with him in BM this month, i felt like i got to know him a bit more as a character after reading that and was pleasantly surprised. i hope they can get that across on tv too.
