Fighters who frequently cut their opponents

Post by Counter-puncher »

Apologies for the brutal sounding title its the only way I could think of phrasing it.

Watching Arguello-Limon, also reminded of the Howard Cosell commentary on the Escalera fight.
It seems a pretty large portion of Arguellos opponents ended up cut, and mostly from his punches too from memory.

Is he really someone who caused more cuts than is average or is that my selective memory yelling me every fight of his I have seen ended up like an abattoir scene. Other than boza I think but he merely was forced to crap himself of.course.

And, are there other fighters you can think of who repeatedly had that effect?

Doesn't answer your question but Jaesung Lee Vs Takuya Watanabe looked like there was a blood donation in the ring, if you look the murder scene look you need to give that a watch!

Muhammad Ali seems to be an obvious choice.

Sugar Ray Robinson probably. In his 2nd fight with Basilio. Robinson closed one of Basilio's eyes with his jab on his way to winning the middleweight title for the fifth time. Ray Robinson was 37 years old at the time.

Nah, your memory isn't selective here. Arguello's as good a choice as they come in this regard. Just a vicious puncher all around.

Hagler?
It's worth mentioning that Hagler fought 2 of the most notorious bleeders of all time, 3 times.
But he did have a habit of beating people to a bloody mess. Hamsho, Roldan and Sibson come to mind.

And how about Hearns? He did a good job of slashing Marvin, Barkley and Duran. And I'm sure there's more that I don't recall off the top of my head.

Just about anyone who fought Henry Cooper or Paul 'Hoko' Hodkinson from a British perspective....both guys were serial 'bleeders' and they seemed to get cut whether the opposition was just so-so or a world champion. Henry and Paul both had a major problem on that front.

Big Lennox seemed to cut people In a nasty way as far as I recall.....the fight with Vitali being a case in point and he also shut Gary Mason's right eye and then cut him badly to bring things to an end. Mason and Vitali both got badly busted up but to their immense credit took it to Lennox.

Even though he only has like 7 stoppages to his credit, Orlando Zulueta of Cuba, who fought during the '50s was a real slicer. He always left a trail of blood behind him and it wasn't his. I read once where he cut up an opponent so bad that the ref stopped the action, pulled Zulueta aside and very gently skimmed over the gloves with his hand. He did it gently because he was sure there was a blade in the glove and he didn't want to cut himself during the inspection.

Anyone else think Arguello could've gotten a TKO victory over Napoles at Lightweight due to cuts?

an interesting match i hadn't thought of, I don't think of Napoles at lightweight really.

stylistically he's a tough matchup for Alexis, very tough, but the usual caveat of 'can he avoid Arguello's meatcleaver fists for the full 15 without getting decapitated or turned into a horrorfilm monster/' applies.

Ismael Laguna used to cut his opponents. Just look at his fight with Mando Ramos and also his fights with Ken Buchanan

Good call Mugabi, Lloyd did tend to make a mess of some people and he threw some arcing shots from odd angles. I think Vaca had gone through nearly 50 pro fights and looked seriously gnarled when he fought Lloyd the first time and the guy did not hang up his gloves until 2002!

I had a look at Vaca's record and there is one tough hombre; pretty much fought everyone out there in a very long career.
