Tony Tucker vs James Broad

Post by Tuan_Jim »

I'm watching Tony Tucker vs James Broad and wondering if there has ever been a 6'5'' giant frame heavyweight who could move like Tucker in the 80s.

216lb of rippling sinew, and he just moves and glides with such grace and coordination, Cassius-style. Snappy jabs and three, four punch combinations executed effortlessly. Seriously hard shots. Always on his toes.

Broad is 6'5'' himself, 240lb-plus, and was in 86 still lively and ambitious. Trying to plant the sort of heavy blows on Tucker that apparently decked Tyson twice in sparring. Occasionally Tucker catches one but, just like when he boxed a peak Tyson, he simply absorbs it.

I can't help but wonder what would have happened if his team had been less cautious and tried move Tucker faster. He seems to have it all. Has anyone seen a giant heavy who can move on his feet with such elegance? I'm interested to hear. I always thought Lewis was rather cumbersome in this area, like a man with two left feet. I'm not sure Bowe ever attempted to move around an opponent.

That he gave prime Lewis a very tough fight while 5 years past his best and making his way through personal issues is testament to the quality of the man! Really great fighter who should have been champ for a long time. His fight with JB Douglas is a great match. Compare this to the shadow of the man who was beaten by Herbie Hide (yuk!)

I agree, what he withstood versus Lewis while 34, 35, and after years of drug abuse does speak volumes about his internal qualities.

The flabby, spaced-out ghost who was fed to Herbie Hide was among the most depressing things I have ever seen in boxing. The Tucker who boxed Broad, Douglas and Tyson (and Lewis) would have squashed Hide.

Another 80's heavyweight what if. Isn't the case with most of them?

Biggs could do all that but often chose not to. Both two of my favourite 80"s fighters

Biggs had some sweet skills before Tyson beat them out of him. Tucker was a much superior fighter.
