What was wrong with your prediction????BoxBuzz wrote:
Yep, I embarrassed myself good on this one. Why? Because I did not educate myself on what Calzaghe could really do.
IF I would have gone back and seriously reviewed both mens body of filmed fights, I wouldn't have made such an ass of myself.
I locked on to some very goofy assumptions. (Which I honestly don't do that often.) Talk about lazy. But I really wanted to make Calzaghe out to be a joke.
The joke was on me, and I paid dearly for my bad betting. lol.
I have vowed never to speak badly of Joe again. And I won't.
I'll also probably have very little positive to say about his opponent.

Most of these predictions are not bad -- many are even picking the favorites...

I only ever picked against lennox Lewis once, went for Golota, got that badly wrong
Re: Worst prediction I ever made. What was yours?
I didn't buy DeLaHoya-Pacquiao because I "Knew" DeLaHoya would win easily.
I told my girlfriend that if Oquendo beats Etienne, I'll become Gay. I reneged on my promise.
Calazaghe-Lacy, I missed big time like others. And I picked Foreman over Young.
I'd be lying if I said I picked Douglas over Tyson, but I thought the 40-1 odds were ridiculous, and if I knew a bookie or was in vegas I would have put $20-$50 on Buster Douglas.

I think I never had as much expectation of a really exciting brawl than I did for Tyson v Bonecrusher.

I remember that. It was when people started to tape programs on VHS. I went to my buddies house after work and said, "Got it Man?!" I'm so psyched to watch, don't tell me what happened!"
He was all like calm down dude.
Others I was surprised by on that level were Hearns-Duran. Thought it would like Duran-Leonard 1, but with more power. Thought Hagler-Duran would be more of a brawl too. But Tyson-Smith was awful and the expectations were sky high.

I actually picked Andy Ganigan to stop Alexis Arguello in 4. I liked the fast starter against the often slow starter and dammit if Ganigan didn't put him on the canvas.
Re: Worst prediction I ever made. What was yours?
I thought that Davey Moore would easily beat Roberto Duran.
I thought that Duran would get killed by Marvin Hagler and Iran Barkley.
My worst ever: Patterson over Liston. I thought that Floyd was too fast for Sonny.

What was your pick for Liston-Patterson 2?

Thought of some more that I goofed on.
Mugabi over Hagler
Hatton over Floyd
James Broad over Marvis Frazier
Donnie Long over James Broad I honestly thought Long was going to be a contender.
Big blunder on that one
Vinnie Pazienza over Greg Haugen
I have made so many bad picks

I picked Bugner over Lyle.
Picked Bugner over Marvis Frazier. Hmm, maybe I picked Bugner too much.
Thought a guy named Ray Elson would be better. Not so much. Remember telling my buddy on the phone, "Turn on the TV, this guy is really good and will upset Michael Spinks." About 2 minutes later the phone rings, I pick it up, he laughs like hell and hangs up.

For some strange reason I picked Roger Mayweathwer to beat Chavez in their rematch after being bombed out in 2 rounds a few years earlier

Hatton over Pac is the only really embarrassing one A lot of people picked Gomez....
I thought Ed Mahone was going to do very well against Vitali......and so did many people who were hooked on the USA network fights. So I take comfort in my shared delusions on that one.

I was a big Archie Moore fan, and was not happy with Patterson's day at work with Archie. So though I liked Patterson much more than Liston, I must admit, I was not terribly unhappy that Floyd saw some tough times in the wake of their fight. I do think Moore would have outlasted Patterson, but that's because he was a master at defense, Patterson relied way too much on his offensive speed which did little to nullify Sonny's advantages on those nights. Archie might not have beaten Liston, but I think he just might have befuddled him and made it through the fight.

Archie Moore was a great fighter. I kind of felt that way when the Jets won their Super Bowl against Baltimore because Baltimore had crushed Cleveland in the NFL title game 34 to 0, and the Browns were my favorite team.
Anyway, Liston was just too big and strong for Floyd, who really should have stayed in the light heavy division, except for the money.
Archie Moore fought a lot of really tough guys in his career (Charles, Burley, Eddie Booker, Lloyd Marshall, Holman Williams, Jimmy Bivins, Bert Lytell, Harold Johnson, Marciano, etc. etc.) and many of them multiple times. He was a real warrior.
A long time ago, I posted about Moore's fight with Tony Anthony. It was about a year after Moore's fight with Patterson. Well, Tony Anthony had a record similar to Patterson's when he fought Archie, both with about 30 wins. I thought that Moore was shot after his fights with Marciano and Patterson, so I thought that his fight with Anthony would be like the Patterson fight all over again. I thought that the 23 year Anthony would knock out Archie and that Moore would probably retire then.
How wrong I was. The old Mongoose showed that he was far from finished, knocking out Tony Anthony in the 7th round.
A true all-time great was Archie Moore.
Re: Worst prediction I ever made. What was yours?
You guys' worst predictions still were informed. I went to the Ali-Holmes closed circuit show believing my man Roughhouse Fischer would outwork Michael Dokes, Bernardo Mercado would brutally KO Leon Spinks, and Ali would magically recapture the title by outpointing Holmes. Trifecta of stupidity as a teenager and I shoulda known better.
