Wladimir slight favourite to beat Fury in rematch

Post by ALI »

Well, most bookies have them level at 10/11, but Victor Chandler and William Hill both make Wlad a very slight favourite at 4/5 with Fury at 11/10.

This has surprised me, Fury has to be favoured in my book, even though it would be hard for Wlad to put in a worse performance than he did first time around i still think Fury is the one who can, and most likely will, improve on his performance.

Anyone else make Wlad favourite to win the rematch, or have it a 50/50 fight?

I am surprised by this. That said, Mike Tyson was a betting favorite in his rematch with Holyfield, which amazed me.

I can't see anything other than a Fury win. No matter how hard Wladimir trains, he won't ever have the stamina to match Fury, and he is too scared to be hit to let his hands go. I can see Fury stopping him even.

What about if Wlad actually throws some punches this time?

I think Klitchko will be a bigger favorite when the fight nears. One win is not enough to prove to the world that you are better then a dominant champion. Fury was a huge underdog.

I think Klitschko can not win with jab and grab approach. To have a chance he needs to employ some of his pre Steward approaches, aggressive combination punching. Interesting thing is that Klitschko in the interview strongly indicated that in fact this is his plan.

I have Fury as a slight favorite like I did before the first fight. But I dont discount Klitschko win at all.

This. There were a few times in the first fight where Wlad could have had Fury in big trouble but didn't throw the right hand. There was certainly a clear cut opportunity about round 8 or 9 but he didn't pull the trigger. If he does throw them this time I can see Wlad knocking fury out. That does, however, leave Wlad open for a counter.

It should be a more entertaining fight.

It will be just a confidence game for Wlad if he rightly control his nerves then he will be able to beat Fury. But in general i agree to you that Fury is favorite because from Wlad prospective its look like difficult that he will cover his confidence.

Reading between the lines it sounds to me like Wladimir did next to nothing in the fight. I would think that if he has any interest in it whatsoever (unless it's just to nail an extra few mil, before bowing out, which is very possible) - I would think a man like Wladimir would have enough of a grasp on sports psychology to be able off-set the inevitable concession of confidence to Tyson Fury....or if he can't, then work with a sports psychologist.... many fighters don't need this of course, but it works for some.
The question is, if Wladimir turns up full of self-belief, will he revert to type as soon as he gets in the ring?

I really can't see Tyson Fury blowing this money-making belt of his by turning up in anything less than excellent condition.

In summary, if Wladimir boxes at 90-95% of his game, he can win the fight.......however, if Tyson Fury boxes at his best, then I don't think it matters what Wlad does, Tyson will win.

He didn't throw punches last time because he couldn't. Fury's speed surprised him and he was scared of getting caught. Plus klitschko has never been a fighter with an amazing engine. He won't be able to throw loads more punches - look how exhausted he was last time. He can't lean on fury, and that is an major part of his arsenal gone.

Vlad wont beat Fury. The only person to beat Fury that night is himself. I cant see how Vlad has a plan B for the fight. The only way he wins is as if Fury goes daft and brave and walks onto something. If the rematch happens it will proberly be another borefest but with a dozen more shots thrown.

Why are people talking about if Wlad 'chooses' to let his hands go?

It's hardly unheard of for near 40 yr old fighters to suddenly lose the ability to let them go. There's a chance he didn't throw and won't throw many ounches in the rematch because he can't anymore.

I remember when fighters were deemed way past their best in mid to late 30's. It's rare a fighter retains his quality at that age. Not even Floyd managed it ( sure he was great but he wasn't as good as he was when he was younger )

Fury should stick to the same gameplan and I think he will

Wlad was aggressive and threw more punches earlier in his career, and his stamina let him down and/or he got hit and beat up. He's older now, his stamina is not going to be better, and he has been gunshy for well over a decade now. I just cannot see him being able to pursue and throw lots of punches either physically or mentally.

Psychologically I think Wlad has a mountain to climb. He was completely outpsyched by team Fury, and they are going to be winding him up something rotten, and now he has had a loss to the man he is to face.

I predict Fury will be a lot more confident in a rematch, and will beat up and stop Wlad late. I don't think he will need to land too many more than he did last time for Wlad to unravel completely.

I think Fury's biggest fear should be getting overconfident, and staying still too long and letting Wlad land, because Wlad certainly has the power to hurt and stop Fury, it's the one thing he has left.

I doubt it. Why didn't Wlad throw last time?

a) He was shit scared of getting hit by Fury, who he couldn't just keep at the end of the jab due to him having a longer reach
b) Fury kept changing the angles, which kept Wlad guessing
c) At 40, the reflexes aren't what they were.

I don't see any of the above, except b) changing, and b) will only change if Fury and his team get overcocky.

A much more even fight due to how Fury performed in the last fight but if i was going to bet on either fighter at those prices it would be on Wlad. Fury put in a very good performance but he didn't dominate him and pepper him with shots left, right and centre. It was very cagey and awkward which left Wlad baffled and unsure.

The big question mark we all had for the last fight was whether Fury could take a big shot and get up and stick to his boxing rather than trading wildly as he did against the smaller men who put him down. Fury nullified that last time (to his credit) but you would expect a champion like Wlad to be at least able to figure out how to land at least a couple of right hands in a rematch.

I'd still have Wlad as a slight favourite for the above reasons and if it is a more open fight i think he will be in a better position to win as he is (or maybe this might show he was) the more powerful man.

Wlad threw about 25 punches all night. He was thoroughly busted up by Fury and was hesitant in everything he did, in case he got put down.

He even resorted to dirty tricks and a wild headbutt.

If he couldn't grow a pair that night, then I don't think he ever will.

We might find that Fury plants his feet more and I'd say he has a better chin than Wlad, and whilst he's not a banger, he's got more than enough to hurt and floor Klitschko.

Fury wasn't exactly throwing much either as he was also wary of getting hit. Wasn't the punches landed stats about 83 in total for both fighters combined. I can't remember the fight in great detail but i thought the cut for Wlad was caused by a clash of heads too.

Both fighters have been hit and hurt by opponents, obviously Wlad has been in much more trouble and stopped but Fury has been in trouble with much less capable fighters.

He might not grow a pair but if he did manage to land clean on Fury do you think that he could have Fury in trouble? I think the last fight just left more questions unanswered than answered.

I agree; he's not suddenly going to turn in Ike Ibeabuchi is he?

I'd disagree with THOUGHROUGHLY busted up, however, considering how little Fury landed, he did look a bit of a mess.

I think I'm inclined to think he may well stop Wlad - I don't think it would take many solid shots for Wlad to go over, and I wouldn't be surprised if he quit to be honest. I think if the going get's tough, Wlad will get going into retirement quite easily.

I think I'll have a punt on late rounds stoppage for Fury.

I believe there were two cuts, one was an accidental clash of heads, the other caused by a punch.

There were a few times in the fight where Wlad had Fury where he wanted but didn't throw the right hand. IF Wlad wants his title back he is going to have to let it go next time if he is to win. I think they will watch the first fight and learn from their mistakes. That's why it will be more entertaining because Fury will have more chances to counter. Neither fighter have the strongest of chins (relatively speaking ) so it's who lands first.

IF Wlad still won't throw that right hand then it will be carbon copy of first fight. The way the fight goes is dependent on what Wlad does with his right hand.

I don't think Wlad's straight right is a danger punch anymore. Reminds me of his brother at the end of his career - the handspeed had gone, therefore the snap and impact of the punch went with it. Some fighter's retain their punch power as a result of being naturally heavy-handed but the Klitschko's power is all about the speed of punch.

That said, Wlad's left hook is still a danger because he gets his full body weight behind it. As long as Fury avoids that, I'll think he'll be alright.

Respectfully disagree. He was scared stiff of being hit back, so won't throw any more punches in the rematch. As he is so scared of being hit, he gets more tired than if he was relaxed, which limits the amount of punches he can throw. Happy to be proved wrong, though.

Good points. But there is something in my mind that also thinks Wlad didn't have a good camp, didn't prepare strategically correctly (he prob though Fury would go after him and didn't realise how good his boxing skills were or long his arms are) and Fury himself is fragile in the early rounds.

However as James says, the aggressive Wlad is long gone and I doubt he would steam in trying to blow Fury out.... He hasn't fought like this for years.

I am not sure I would bet on this fight, at least not until we see the odds - the bookies might price it wrong on train outcomes or rounds which may warrant a small bet.

wlad can't be that bad again ,when he let his hands go a bit in the 12th fury was hanging on . i think it's an evens fight myself and i expect wlad to go for the KO which would mean he either gets to fury in side 6 or wlad gets ko'd after that
