Is Golovkin really the 9th best ??

This is all down to opinions, but Boxing News has Golovkin as 9th in their pound for pound list. They also have him number 3 at middleweight -really!!!

Lets deal with the middleweight issue first. At number 2 is Cotto. Do the Boxing News really believe that Cotto would last more than a couple of rounds against the worlds hardest puncher ( pound for pound !). Alvarez wouldn't last the 12 rounds, although much longer than Cotto, and I don't believe his people will be queuing up at Golovkins door anytime soon.

In the last issue Bellew and Lockett thought he was fighter of the year and Virgil Hunter hints at that opinion. The Boxing News lists him at number 4 in their international fighter of the year ahead of Bradley and Gonzalez, who strangely enough are ABOVE him in the pound for pound rankings. I've been frustrated with this for over a year now. Every time the Boxing News interview someone in general terms they all rate Golovkin as the man, and yet when it comes to ratings he's down the list. I don't get it.

Golovkin is P4P no. 1 or 2. Its a toss up between him and Gonzalez. If Golovkin gets a top name on his resume he is number one clear IMO.

Good spot and agreed - it really does seem a bit wonky-donkey and especially as it runs against the editorial opinion the Boxing News team has been running as well as the quotes/views of those they interview.

It might be a case of them not having the time to adjust the rankings and they'll get round to it; but really the current rating of Golvokin in BN needs sorting pronto and clashes with what they are writing themselves nearly every week and what the external experts think as well.

But it's not just who you beat it's how you beat them. P4P lists are nonsense and of only use as a mental exercise for trying to imagine how fighters who will never fight would get on. People really tend to go overboard with it.

GGG looks like the best there is but it's only really the watching him that tells us how good we think he is rather than his results.

I listen to the Boxing News podcast which is ok, even if a little dull as they are employed by Newsquest and scared of offending the corporate machine but the guys are proper boxing guys so this surprises me. GGG would walk through Cotto and Alvarez in the same night.

With GGG it's always a case of how he might perform. He's in a fairly weak division anyway, without much else in his immediate vicinity. Fans really are frothing at the mouth over him. Heavy handed fellow, but doesn't look all that amazing technique-wise.

I thought Garcia lost to Herrera a few bouts ago and fought very closely with a good but unspectacular fighter in Peterson, while Paulie was shopworn, hadn't fought in 15 months, and was destroyed in that fight. Judah and Morales were also well past their best despite still being somewhat useful, and they both gave him tough bouts, with Judah managing to hurt him and generally get the better of the late rounds. Now Garcia has an impressive resume, but I can't have him touching the top spot considering his performances and how good his opponents were at the time he fought them. Incidentally, his next opponent follows the script of matching him with a fairly big name who is past their best--it will look good to have Guerrero on his resume and I imagine that RG will be added to 'look at how strong Danny's opposition is' lists like the one you've posted, but the reality is that he's shot and not a serious contender anymore.

Having GGG below Cotto at MW is a joke. Not only did he lose his last bout and get widely beaten by Austin Trout a few fights ago, his only wins at MW are over someone GGG already stopped and a guy that went life and death with Martin Murray, another GGG victim. He doesn't have a better resume at the weight, he lost his last fights at 160 and 154, and I don't see how he wins a head to head against GGG.

GGG is the number1 middleweight alvarez is a LM as for p4p id av ward number 1 roman gonzalez as number two then its a toss up between kovalev and GGG imo

A P4P list is a matter of opinion anyway isnt it? If u asked ten boxing fans who their top ten is probably the first 2/3 would be the same then there would probably be 7 boxers all in different order.

I was surprised when I seen he was at 9 but I ho honestly don't think he's as good and 'unbeatable' as people think he is.
