Post by Manchester Massive »

Who would come out top in your opinion in a round robin of these 4, talking about them in their best performance, so v Maidana, Tyszu,Porter and Curry.

Hatton fought KT at light welter. He could fight effectively at welter.

I like this order, although I think the Brook that beat Porter might well beat Hatton (depending on other intangibles like the referee, as that would influence what Hatton could do). But I would love to have seen Honeyghan v Kirkland Laing.

Pretty much what I reckon as well although I think they could all end up close tough fights with possible exception of Khan walking on to one against Honeyghan or Brook

Hatton lost an awful lot of his advantages at Welter. Brook would be miles bigger than him.

Good thread and not surprised everyone goes with the nostalgic fighter, as per.

I really don't know how I'd rate them to be honest. Hatton is the best of the four lb for lb in my opinion but at WW I'm not so sure. I think it's tough to call as we don't know how good Khan and Brook truly are until their careers are finished.

I also think Brook's Porter display has been overrated in time. He won an MD and I thought he could have easily lost the fight being away (although I had him up by a point). Porter is a good world level pro but he's not even close to an elite fighter, and it's not like Brook schooled him by any stretch of the imagination.

Honeyghan's best wins eclipse the best of Hatton's record, especially at Welterweight.

Curry was thought virtually unbeatable going into the fight with Honeyghan, and he was in his physical prime, Lloyd mugged him good and proper. Way more impressive than the win over Tszyu.

Brook could yet turn out to be far better than his career so far suggests, Khan I'd say has got as far as he can at WW, and won't go on to do much more. Hatton wasn't impressive at WW.

Honeyghan was easily the most talented ,versatile, the biggest puncher, the best defence ......it just goes on and on.

A real shame the curry fight was the last time we saw the peak lloyd.

In the year and a half approaching that fight he was just an exceptional boxer, beautiful to watch, like an english benitez.the shufford fight in particular. He had incredible power despite his severe hand problems.

I see him banging out khan within 3 one sided rounds, khans aggression would play right into his hands.

Brook would be a tough fight 12 rounds but lloyds class would win it 116-112.

Hatton would get marked up badly and likewise lloyd would easily counter him and the power would tell but a 9th round stoppage

Interesting thread..... I think a case could be made for any of these at Welter.

Yes, people might say that Hatton lost all of his advantages at Welter - but did he really? I mean if we forget his 2012 comeback he fought twice at Welter - okay he struggled against Collazo, but other time was against Floyd effing Mayweather - hardly a fair comparison to say he "lost" something. Lets be real, would Hatton seriously done any more had they both fought at 140..... okay, there is Collazo but was that an offnight? Took him lightly etc?

Then we have Khan - Chinny, yes and seems to blow hot and cold. Just when you think he's settled, he looks poor again. Both under Roach and now under hunter he seems to blow hot and cold. When he is hot though, he's dominated some pretty decent fighters.

The more inactive Kell Brook is, the better he seems to be perceived. Talent no doubt, but only 1 fight in true world class - A good win, but I think immediately post Porter he was not considered the favourite vs Bradley and those lot.... but now he has been inactive, he seems to be viewed more favourably..... I think he is a huge talent, but a lot to prove.

Honeyghun - As been mentioned, possibly one of the performances of any UK fighter vs Curry - a mastermind of a display, he just kept pumping and pumping that jab all night. BUT, didn't really replicate that type of performance. Was it just a inspired display or did Curry flatter him a tad. In some ways a "better" Khan in that he was very inconsistent. His best seemed better and his worst didn't seem to be quite a bad as Khan - but if anything he was more inconsistent.

Honey than by Ko against Hatton (not true welter) and Khan (too chinny). Points win over Brook.

This..imo one of the finest (in retrospect) by a brit in italy was loyds ko of Rosi...who while not a big puncher went on to be a double world champ at lt..middle. fine win Iin any era.

I don't think the Curry performance flattered Honeyghan. To me, the reason why Honeyghan's performances tailed off was hand trouble, which was quite well publicised at the time. And as another poster said, beating Rosi in Italy was another huge performance given what Rosi later achieved. Ditto the Blocker fight. He went into the first Vaca fight with a hand injury, and I think that affected him massively from that point onwards. So my rating of Honeyghan is based on him fighting without his hands bothering him.

At his best, at WW, he was some distance ahead of the rest of the pack. I have a feeling Kell Brook may go on to achieve more than some expect if he can stay grounded and focussed.

The only possible knock on the win over Curry, is the fact that in later years, it was well documented that Don had terrible coke problems, however, we cannot know the impact that had on him coming into the fight with Honeyghan, and prior to that, he had looked unbelievably good, he looked for all the world like he was going to go on to become another Sugar Ray Leonard, and still achieved a lot, though never quite lived up to his talents on potential fully.

However, that's not the only good win on Honeyghan's resume, as others have commented.

A good comment re the Porter win - I completely agree. I actually, at the time, was a tad disappointed in Kell that night... and I thought he still has a fair amount to learn - but it seems like time has healed people's perceptions of that fight - cos despite fighting no one of note since (at world level) he's been considered one of the only viable contenders for Mayweather. I would like to see him fight more on the Porter level before calling him the second coming. It is as if his inactivity has meant he has over stepped Keith Thurman in terms of the "next big thing".

His Blocker win was very impressive, looking at what Blocker did after especially. However, thinking of the manner of the win - was it much better than Khan vs Alexander or Judah?

Honeyghan became a worse boxer after his Curry win, he became a wild puncher who traded off aggression; Starling and Breland destroyed him.
