Kovalev vs Stevenson in June ?

“I spoke to (Michel) on Tuesday, he’s still saying that he and Adonis and all are all motivated for June and Al (Haymon) is saying he’s going to get this done,” Duva said. “Adonis has to sign the contract, that’s all it takes. You can only do so much. There’s no purse bid. 50-50 is incredibly fair.

“It can either be in Canada or the U.S. My feeling is that it’s likely to end up in the U.S. No doubt it sells out. MSG is interested in the fight and so is MGM. The one thing that’s consistent about this fight, is that it’s a sure sell out.”

Not a chance. Kovalev will handle a mandatory in June and then ward in the fall. Al knows after June sergey has to fight ward, this is just to get heat off of Adonis.

If the Adonis fight gets made, mandatories will have to wait ... and you seem to be one of a very few believing that Ward will actually dare to face Kova. Do you expect Ward to have two tuneups before June?

Kovalev ducked Stevenson.

Stevenson doesn't need to get the heat off of him, Kovalev does.

Really??? Stevenson was the one who jumped the ship to run to Haymon when his fight against Kovalev was imminent. Kovalev was ready to fight him on HBO after that, but Haymon was pushing for a purse bid.

What's wrong with a purse bid?

Haymon wins it and the fight has to happen on PBC/Showtime, while Kova has to fight on HBO. That is why the quote from the article about no purse bid is important.

Duva was the one pushing for the purse bid, she got Kovalev in the position in the WBC.

Duva screwed up. She wanted the mandatory position to corner Stevenson, but didn't count simple moves.

Hope it happens.

But Kovalev should NOT overlook Pascal, he's a top light heavyweight and let's not forget the fight is on his home turf.

Does anyone know which of the sanctioning bodies allow unifications to take priority over mandatories? Perhaps the mandatories will be a non-issue.

Kovalev didn't duck stevenson. He has an idiot for a promoter who overplayed her hand and made them both look dumb.

I would be shocked if this fight ever happened. And it is not selling out in the US. Hopefully she is using it as a negotiating tactic, but there is no reason this fight should not be in canada. Kovalev has fought there before, is fighting there again, and it would be much, much bigger there than vegas or even ny.

I reckon more than any other this is the fight boxing fans want to see but it seems Stevenson doesn't want it.

The video of their meeting clearly shows who's scared of who.

The issue is that Kovalev has to fight on HBO, Al's fighters don't.

What actually happened between Haymon and HBO, was it a case of HBO not letting his fighters on anymore? Al's fighters fight on different networks/channels or whatever they're called in the US, as long as they're not contracted to a network surely HBO would make an exception for Kovalev-Stevenson and allow a Haymon fighter on their network? That's if Al would actually want it be on HBO anyway. Rambling a bit but whatever, all hypothetical I guess.

Back to boxing, if the fight was to happen in June and Kovalev wins and then beats Ward later in the year, I can't think of the last time a fighter had a year as good as that. Wins over Pascal, Stevenson and Ward would make Kovalev the clear p4p #1 for me.

HBO has nothing against Haymon fighters as long as HBO decides if a card is acceptable or not. Haymon doesn't like that condition. Kovalev vs Stevenson on HBO is absolutely possible if Haymon is OK with it.

It already would have happened if he was and on the other side of the equation, HBO isn't going to want to risk Kovalev/Ward for a guy that is one and done. It's not going to happen, no chance.

I don't see how Stevenson could win that fight if Kovalev is at his normal sharp level. That left hand might land and rock Sergey at some point but it's not going to be enough.

HBO is more realistic than you about Ward getting into the ring with Kovalev. If Haymon agrees, Sergey will fight Adonis.

HBO has a contract with Ward and Kovalev. The reason it is specific is because Stevenson already fled the network when he was supposed to fight Kovalev next.

HBO knows how Ward honors his contracts, and they see what opponents he is fighting or trying to fight in the last few years. Kovalev vs Stevenson can even draw more ppvs that Kovalev vs Ward.
