Yep. The problem was if it goes to a purse bid Haymon is guaranteed to win and would take the fight somewhere other than HBO. Kovalevs contract requires him to fight on HBO. It would be up to HBO to allow him to fight on another network. Or for an agreement to somehow be made where haymon lets his guy fight on HBO (and they are willing to allow him to, which is unclear at this point but it seems like they would).

Exactly, and with Kovalev/Ward signed for HBO PPV(bust) in the Fall there is no way HBO is going to let that happen. It's just stupid business. Much like putting up the money required for Kovalev/Stevenson when it could blow up that fight is stupid business. No doubt Kovalev and Duva would love it, and we'll see if Nelson and Al mend that relationship, but there is no way in hell HBO is doing Kovalev/Stevenson in June.

If you read the link from the original post, you will see that Haymon OKed the fight WITHOUT A PURSE BID.

HBO doesn't care which fight they are making money on. Kovalev vs Stevenson for an undisputed championship will do no worse than Kovalev vs Ward, and there is still a very good chance that Kovalev wins and fights Ward in the fall (provided Ward overcomes his issues).

LOL, HBO certainly cares about where they are spending their money. Kovalev vs Stevenson is an HBO card that demands big purses and includes a fighter that they don't have under contract. Kovalev vs Ward is a PPV between two HBO contracted fighters where the financial burden falls on the promoters. I don't know if you're stubborn or just lack business training. Either way, you're wrong.

I think Kovalev would ice Adonis, for HBO they're one left hand away from losing a big fight.

Why can't Kovalev vs Stevenson be a PPV ? Stevenson is a better draw than Ward, and that would be a fight for undisputed championship.

You did not explain anything beside your firm belief that Ward will fight Kovalev after June. Why can't Kovalev have a PPV against Stevenson in June you didn't explain.

Stevenson is turning 38. His career is about over, and Haymon may sacrifice him to Beterbiev or another young guy. Having a PPV against Kovalev seems to be a good way to check out.

I'm sorry but if they did that fight on ppv it would do awful numbers unless they completely stacked the undercard. That GGG fight barely had $150k buys and he is way bigger than kovalev. I doubt it does 100k buys, maybe 75k.

As Saad pointed out, there are plenty of reasons why HBO wouldn't pay want to pay stevenson. However, I wonder if they would make the investment to boost kovalev-ward ppv numbers because I don't see that fight doing well on ppv either.

Not a chance, they'd have no option on Stevenson and he isn't a name anyway. Agreed kovalev/ward will tank, but that's their concrete play.

I think the best bet would be for them both to fight on June on the same card, but I don't see ward fighting twice in 3 months. Lol

Kovalev is already #1 p4p.

I think this fight is bad for Kovalev. Even though I do think he is the better fighter, Stevenson can fight off his back foot with devastating power.
I also think after the high of the Dawson win, without a big opponent, Stevenson has been fighting down to the level of his opponents.
He has definitely looked more lazy in the ring compared to how he looked in 2013. I would expect him to be very motivated for Kovalev.

... or Kovalev could catch Adonis early and end the fight.

This is #1 fight that could be made in boxing right now imo.

I disagree. Golovkin would likely beat Kovalev at 170 and probably at 172.

Nah, it won't tank, as it isn't gonna happen. Ward can't bring his a$$ into the ring against Barrera, so he will find a 1000 reasons to duck Kova.

Boy get off that crack ...

Likely means favored. If you were a bookmaker, you'd list GGG as the favorite over Kovalev at 170 or 172?

We're talking about GGG, not Sugar Ray Robinson. I hate when fandom invade serious boxing discussions.
I hate when I do it. It makes the more rational fan have to constantly talk down an over-hyped excellent fighters.

We've been through this a thousand times. The purse bid for Kovalev/Stevenson came up at a time when Kovalev's contract with HBO was over. They claim "matching rights" could have been enacted, which if you understand what that means, has no relevance whatsoever to the status of a fight between Kovalev and Stevenson. They dropped out of the running when they were convinced they couldn't win the bid and would be made to look fools. Luckily Minor Events has enough pull with the anti-Haymon brigade by being the source of most the anti-PBC leaks that excuses are still made.

Golovkin has better skills than Kovalev. At 170, Kovalev would be extremely drained; at 172 -- seriously drained. Personally, I have no doubts in GGG win at 170-172. Kovalev would never agree to fight at such weight, as it would be very hard for him to cut those pounds.
