The problem is that the early fights don't have much footage so if we just look at a single match up then we are ruling out a lot of 'historical ' fighters. I agree with earlier comments regarding maybe watching 3-4 clips of some earlier fights that only have minimal footage just to get a general overview of some of the greats.

A lot of fights suggested tend to be in my lifetime (post 80's) and if this is to be a historical education then surely we have to go back a bit further at some point.

A very knowledgeable boxing fan once said to me "To know about boxing you got to learn about the past."

I'm sure they won't all be 80's/90's fights; I believe this was just a fairly easy & inclusive starting point.

I suppose that's the best way to do it. On other forums these types of threads get moved to the historic. This thread might get some of the posters of current boxing more clued up on important boxers of the past. I'm no historian but I can tell by some of the picks that a lot of posters are just picking fights from their own era. Probably fights they've already watched. This could be an excellent thread if posters are willing to delve outside of their comfort zone.

You post over on BOTP and seem interested in seeing some more historic stuff, which is more what I'm looking for from this experiment (although I'm open to a good mix) so throw some suggestions out there. But please be sure there is suitable footage first otherwise it's a waste of time

I'd like something different, another era and another weightclass.

It's been a while since I saw Watt vs Arguello and I've unbelievably never watched Curry vs Honeyghan.
Could be a few worth watching

I'm going to vote for a heavyweight again and go proper old
Brian London vs Floyd Patterson in 1959.
It's one of the oldest I've found where I've got the full fight on film. (footage looks a little grainy but that's what happens when you watch old fight film)
Gives us a chance to dig into a little history and learn something about a couple fighters we possibly don't know much about

Just noticed Jimmy McLarnin was born in the UK, what a run of opponents he had in the later years of his career and there's a few youtube videos to boot.
Definitely one to add to the likes of Benny Lynch and Ted kid Lewis to have a look at.
