Could DLH handle Mayweather if they meet later this year?

Post by johnswan1 »

Just read a piece there about De La Hoya and his plans for this year. He says he wants to come in at 150 lbs for the fight against Mayorga before trimming down further to 147 lbs (for the first time since 2001) to fight Mayweather in his final fight.

Assuming DLH gets past Mayorga and Floud gets past Zab, do you think he could get down to 147lbs and if so, do you think this would be a competitive fight? I always considered DLH to be one of the smartest fighters around and think this would be a great match up. Even against Hopkins I thought he held his own for the first five or six rounds when he was clearly out of his depth at the weight. Also interesting is Floyd Sr. being Oscars trainer.

I think Oscar would be much bigger than anybody Floyd has faced before (remember how much of a monster DLH was even compared to Gatti?). Despite DLH not being active, I think he'd be serious about this fight and it's one I'd be really excited about - plus would probably have more PPV buys than any other fight of recent times, maybe even a record outside of heavyweight?

I think Floyd would beat him easily. I think Floyd is by far the better fighter technically.

Considering that Oscar struggled with an aged and crack raddled Pernell Whittaker who had similar defensive gifts to floyd, but less offensive prowess, I think stylistically he would have had similar problems with Floyd.

At 147 I think Mayweather wins, if it was at 154 I would give De La Hoya more of a chance.

I'd strongly fancy De La Hoya to outpoint Mayweather. I can't see Mayweather dealing with his jab and weight of punch.
Whilst he's probably the best fighter in the game, I wouldn't consider Mayweather on the same level as a Whitaker. Busting up Gatti is what De La Hoya was doing years ago.

De la hoya will have bother getting down to 147 so if was at a catch weight of around 150 - 154 then i would favour de la hoya as floyds power and punch resistance is unprover even at 147. You know de la hoya will be able to land some combos on him.

Very interesting fight, does Oscar have anything left ?

I'm gunna have to pick PBF simply because i think Oscar may now be past it, he's had a year or so out of the ring, he's coming back against Mayorga which surely will take something out of Oscar, so by the time he gets to PBF i think time will have its toll & PBF just cruises to a UD.

You're also talking about one of the slickest boxers of all time when you mention Sweet Pea. Name someone at that weight that was as good as Pernell was a much better fighter than the one that DLH saw in 97. That's when his cocaine issues started coming out, and he was also 4 bouts away from retiring at that point. PBF definitely has more punching power than Sweet Pea, and is just as fast, but he needs a gutcheck to really be put up there. However, maybe he's just that good tha he'll never get one...who knows.

That's so true

If De La Hoya deosn't hurt Floyd badly with his first big shot, Oscar won't have a chance.

Prime DLH, I think its a great fight, can't tell who wins...however, 2006 Oscar, and 2006 PBF...no contest. Floyd gets a late KO or UD. I just don't think Oscar will be succesful at 147 or 154 or whatever weight its at vs PBF.

DLH knows how history will see Floyd. If DLH and Mayweather win versus Mayorga and Judah respectively, this fight will likely happen.

Totally agree. DLH would have been schooled by a prime Whittaker even at welter where DLH was more natural at the weight I think it would have been a wide decision win for Sweetpea.

Mayweather has all the tools to emulate Sweetpea, and doesn't appear to have the same predilction for crack smoking. Floyd is a better offensive fighter than Sweetpea as we have both said, and actually looks like he might carry the weight quite well at 140 and maybe 147. He's probably a natural 140 lber and will make a small welter.

If DLH wants the fight he will INSIST it is at 154, and bank on being able to hurt Mayweather.

Thing is, Floyd could probably come in at 147 and just win on points by making DLH miss.

Oscar is a good fighter, with good speed and power especially at 147, but technically he has always had a lot of flaws. Stands with his head high a bit square on too, and isn't very flexible in the exchanges.
