Jeff Horn signs deal to bring big-time boxing to Brisbane

Jeff Horn is ready to lead a boxing boom in Brisbane with a new Fox Sports deal that will make this city the fight capital of Australia.

The Olympian from Acacia Ridge will have his next three fights in his home city leading into a possible world title fight within 12 months.

Even though Horn is recovering from surgery to remove all four of his wisdom teeth he could still crack a huge smile yesterday.

“It’s fantastic to know that I’ll now be fighting in front of my friends and family on a regular basis,’’ he said.

Horn, 27, the No. 5 contender for American Tim Bradley’s WBO welterweight (67kg) title burst into the world rankings by winning his last six bouts in New Zealand, fighting in Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North and Invercargill.

In his last bout he manhandled European Union champ Ahmed El Mousaoui, a lanky Frenchman who had beaten a former world titleholder in his previous start and had lost just once in 24 previous fights.

For the last 18 months, Horn’s Auckland-based promoters Duco Events needed to include him on their programs topped by Kiwi world No. 3 heavyweight Joseph Parker across the Tasman because they did not have an Australian TV deal in place to showcase Australia’s hottest prospect in his home country.

But Duco chief Dean Lonergan said yesterday the undefeated Horn would now be the star of his own shows as Brisbane became the focus of his world title shot.

“We have always believed that Jeff is a future world champion and realistically he is only a few bouts away from fighting for a major title,’’ Lonergan said.

“He’s a tremendous athlete and a great young guy who can carry Australian boxing for a long time. He did a stunning job in beating Mousaoui in his last fight and more than ever that convinced us that he can definitely be Australia’s next world boxing champ.

“He is the focus for a long-term deal we have with Fox but by promoting him in Australia we will also be able to showcase a lot of other top Australian boxers in Brisbane and we’re looking to have a couple of Australian title fights on Jeff’s first shows at the Brisbane Convention Centre in March and May.’’

Lonergan and Horn’s trainer Glenn Rushton are looking at a long list of highly rated opponents for Horn in 2016 including former American world champs Chris Algieri and Jessie Vargas.

Hearing Jeff Horn's next fight will be in March. His opponent likely to be a former multiple world titleholder.

Just checked out Baileys record on Boxrec and watched him on YouTube. The guys good!

Still I think Jeff will be too clinical and will perform tidy and convincing.
