Hearns vs Ray II

Post by BoxBuzz »

Yeah I went back and watched this again, now taking into account that Ray concedes the fight, what went wrong with the scoring?

After looking at it once again, I do believe it could conceivably be a draw but those two knockdowns were pretty defining.

Although if it went 3 more rounds, I'm thinking it does Tommy no good based on what transpired in round 12.

Just how bad a call was it on a 1 to 10 basis?

I'm thinking a one or a two.

My take?

If Hearns was called the winner, I don't think the majority of people would have complained.

The draw seemed only slightly wrong to me.

If Ray would have walked out a winner, I think we'd have to call that a near travesty.

Did Ray win enough rounds to counteract those knockdowns? Maybe....and Tommy seemed happy with the outcome though he said he thought he won....but he was always pretty non reactive to decisions. Ray seemed to think he earned the draw...or do you think he was just grateful for it? His face reaction to the decision did seem grateful, though his words at the immediate interview seemed like he felt he earned at least the draw.

Damn Ray had a great chin. And yeah, Tommy could hit like a nuclear device.

Hearns was the unfortunate recipient of a significant screw job.

Call it a 6.5 on the Screw Job scale.

Very easy to score. 115-111 hearns. Total robbery. He was clearly up 40-35 after 4, the kd in the 11th sealed it up.

Hearns should have got the decision & that was the only just outcome.

OK, Sugar made it closer than it appeared, but there is no way he should have left that arena with his titles that night.

Besides the facts that Leonard landed more punches and hurt Hearns more than vice versa, lets talk about the thing hardly anyone ever wants to talk about. The first knockdown should not have counted. It was a punch to the back of the head followed by a shove. It's on film for all to see.

The tension in both was so high they both looked awful and put in a terrible performance.

Srl looked faster v norris.never saw his hands so slow

Tommy looked nothing like the fighter of speed, skill or punch who beat hill 3 years later

Leonard had the 2 best rounds in the fight and probably had a chance of a stoppage in the final rd had Hearns not gotten away with holding.

I have always said, even back then in 1984, if Sugar Ray met The Hitman in a rematch above 147lbs, that The Hitman would've won because he was much stronger above 147lbs. Especially, at 154lbs. I can't see how Sugar Ray would've beaten him. It would've been a different story. And it showed, even with Tommy being considered washed up by the media then.

Tommy won that second fight outright

Well that last round had to equalize at least one of the knockdowns. Then you have to assess the rest of the fight, by throwing out the last round, and one knockdown round..... figuring Hearns having the advantage of one knockdown.

If anything, it just showed that in a 15 round fight, at any weight, at any stage of their careers, Leonard would've always eventually made Hearns wilt.

The last round being a 10-8 is silly. Tommy opened the round hurting Leonard, then tay beat the shit out of him; but it was too big of a moment in a 10-8 round.

Well, I was simply attempting to set up the "best case" that could be made.....so if you don't think that last round was that lop sided, then it becomes a steeper curve to justify a draw.

It wasn't a realistic 10-8 round. There is no basis for a draw. It was bullshit.

I disagree. The Hitman would've knocked him out much quicker. At 168lbs, The Hitman was way past his prime. Leonard's manipulative calculation backfired. He took the rematch 8 years later because he thought that Tommy was shot. Leonard was the fresher man. In 1984, at 154lbs, and in The Hitman's prime, different story from the first fight. A nasty knockout win by Hearns in my view

Much quicker? He never knocked him out in the first place.

In the first fight, both in their prime, Ray knocked him out in the championship rounds. In their second fight, both well past their prime, Ray was still on the verge of knocking him out down the stretch. A round, maybe two more would've sealed the deal.

I see no cause to assume it would've been any different at 154 or 160. Ray could take Tommy's best punches. Tommy couldn't take Ray's. Simple.

The great Thomas Hearns at 154lbs and in his complete prime, was a complete monster. A very devastating puncher. Wrong match for Sugar Ray in 1984.

At 147lbs, it's a toss up. Above that weight class, and both in their primes, it's all Tommy "The Hitman" Hearns...Too devastating of a puncher.

What, Hearns didn't knock him out?

Btw-It would be nice to hear more examples in which a fighter (such as Leonard) landed more punches than his opponent, and hurt his opponent more than vice versa, and yet it is total BS that the other guy did not get the decision.
I'm sure people can come up with thousands of examples.
