Re: 52 fight challenge: Week 4 - Jim Watt vs Alexis Arguello
Watt - Arguello
-10-----10 - Horribly dull opening round, commentators gave it to Arguello for moving forward but not enough happened to score either man winner
-10-----9 - Another slow one, Arguello with a couple decent punches early, Watt landed a couple late in the round. hard to score
--9-----10 - Clear Arguello round, started well, landed a few good shots early then controlled the rest of the round
--9-----10 - Watt looking tentative, Arguello again winning the round in the first minute, getting through Watts guard regularly, then coasting.
--9-----10 - Much closer round with both men landing scoring shots with either hand, Felt Arguello landed slightly more and slightly harder
--9-----10 - Another close one with both getting off, but most work from Watt coming from the jab. Argullo pressing well and showing variety
--8-----10 - knockdown decides the round,
-10-----9-not much in it but Watt contributed more than he has in any other round. Countered a few Arguello jabs and let the left hand go occasionally
--9-----10 Arguello took a minute off at the start of the round but grew into it and finished stronger
-10-----9 - Watt got on the front foot for the first time and backed Arguello up and it worked. Felt Arguello could have done more with Watt cut tho
--9-----10 - Arguellos round started backing Watt up again, still think he could do more. Looks like he knows he has it won and is pacing himself
-10-----9 - Watt just doing enough in a good round. Commentry team don't sound like they like Jim much, must know he's after their jobs
-10-----10 - Watt busier, Arguello landed heavier, particularly a couple good shots in the last 20 seconds that could have nicked the round
--9-----10 - Arguello landing a couple nice left hook round the outside, right through the middle combos. Watt had moments but not enough
--9-----10 - Watt missed with a good few of the big punches he tried to land to change it in the last round, Arguello landing more cleanly
140 - 146
Don't think we learned a lot about Jim Watt other than at 33 he wasn't quite good enough to beat a legend like Arguello. Not sure that will surprise many.
The 4 rounds I gave to Watt were tight, where as Arguello had a couple of wider rounds in amongst the 9 I scored in his favour and I could easily have scored the two 10-10 rounds to Arguello. So I can see how that might have been wider.
The fight had a decent amount of action but was fairly one paced and one dimensional. No body work to speak of, no inside fighting and not a huge amount of movement.
Watt moved straight back from Arguello, just stepping away from him for most of the fight, but always letting him stay in range, would liked to have seen him circle anti clockwise to get round Arguellos jab, as the commentators pointed out, Watts right hand looked the stiffer of the 2 and would him like to see him try to get more hooks off instead of pushing out the jab, think he might have had more success.
Not sure Watt had the spring in his step at that stage of his career and ultimately I felt Arguello had another gear if he needed it but felt comfortable and knew he was landing the cleaner shots for the majority of the fight.
Nice touch and plenty respect from Jim after Arguello's passing

147-137 Arguello for me,Watt took too long to get going and in all fairness was always second best,he seemed to show Alexis too much repect for 1st half of the fight,it was a good fight to watch though i enjoyed it,Arguello is a joy to watch when in full flow,a master boxer
Re: 52 fight challenge: Week 4 - Jim Watt vs Alexis Arguello
As I said, I can totally see it wider than I had it and didn't give a round definitively to Watt until the 10th when he started backing him up.handsofstone wrote:147-137 Arguello for me,Watt took too long to get going and in all fairness was always second best,he seemed to show Alexis too much repect for 1st half of the fight,it was a good fight to watch though i enjoyed it,Arguello is a joy to watch when in full flow,a master boxer
I'll watch a bit more Arguello I think, I enjoyed his performance, I think I may enjoy some of his earlier bouts at lighter weights.

Both Pryor fights are classics davie i watched them for 1st time last year
Incase you dont know this,in the 1st fight late on Arguello's coming on strong then in the corner after the 11th or 12th round,Pryor's trainer Panama Lewis asks his 2nd for the water, when he passes him it,Lewis says "nah the one thats mixed" and he passes him another bottle Aaron drinks from, low and behold after looking ragged previously Pryor comes out like a man possesed and the rest is history
As far as i know nothing ever happened to Panama or Pryor

Have you watched any of Arguello's bouts from his feather weight days?handsofstone wrote:Both Pryor fights are classics davie i watched them for 1st time last year

Was interested in seeing a younger quicker Alexis, I'm willing to bet there's one or two classics in there

I've started with Prior and I just put on the first fight and had to pop back on here and say, I think that's the best first round I've ever watched.
Re: 52 fight challenge: Week 4 - Jim Watt vs Alexis Arguello
Well that was magnificent,
Prior was like a buzz saw from start to finish, seldom let up and threw an outrageous number of punches, with some fantastic combinations (certainly did find a second wind in that 14th round though) and great head and foot movement right up until he tired
Arguello was a superb boxer. Not the fastest hands, I noticed that in the Watt fight, but such an accurate puncher, punches through his target so well and gets full extension on his straight punches to rock Priors head back in every round. The little dips to the left and throw the left uppercut/overhand right was a beautiful combo as well that he used regularly.

Cracking fight Davie, have you seen much of Pryor before? Ive only seen both Arguello fights but he really impressed me,he threw his career away by all accounts and was gonna be fighting Leonarddavie wrote:Well that was magnificent,

No, that's the first I've watched of Prior, surely he doesn't go at it like that in all his fights.handsofstone wrote: Cracking fight Davie, have you seen much of Pryor before? I've read a few talk about him, particularly in reference to the Leonard fight that should have happened.
A few talk about him being a really good fighter but he's missing those big names on his record, Arguello was the best he fought and he was getting towards the end of his career and 3 divisions up from where he started. Same goes for Cervantes that he won the title from, whose best days were probably behind him
As such I'm not sure what other fights of his I'd be overly fussed about watching (although I suspect he's one of those guys who doesn't need to be in 50/50 fights to be entertaining, watching him dismatle lower ranked opposition would probably be fun)
I'll certainly give Arguello vs Prior 2 a watch though.

Re: 52 fight challenge: Week 4 - Jim Watt vs Alexis Arguello
I kinda enjoyed it. One paced as mentioned but other than the absolutely dire first two rounds there was enough action all the way through to keep me interested. Both men pace their way through 15 rounds pretty well I thought.
Had watt got that right jab working earlier, he could have made things much closer.
Interesting that two judges scored 6 of the rounds level.

Don't let him pick any more!
In my defence I did say we should go for more fights with stoppages

I had it 146-138 Arguello.
Watt was to tentative for many rounds against Arguello who was one of the best ever at feather/lightweight.

Arguellos demolition of Wayne Rooney features one of the loudest punches I've heard. Alexis could hit for sure. First Escalera fight is fantastic though I've not seen it in great quality since I had it on VHS.
Re: 52 fight challenge: Week 4 - Jim Watt vs Alexis Arguello
He bloody did, you know. At least up until the comeback. He was like that in every fight I've seen until then. From the whispers I've heard it seems Pryor began using cocaine heavily in that first retirement and was never the same afterwards.davie wrote:

It was a brave effort from Watt but he wasn't at the same level as Arguello.
