DeGale Groves Rematch

Post by Taansend »

If it did happen in the next year or so, how do you think it would pan out?

During the first fight I had the feeling that DeGale could have won if he'd put in a bit more effort but he felt that he could win any time (I felt the same watching Leonard Hagler).

Obviously DeGale has looked better since then & Groves finest moment was looking fantastic against (an unmotivated???) Carl Froch in their first fight. But sometimes a fighter just has another fighters number.

Maybe Groves has DeGales.....

What do you think?

I think it's a close fight, but Degale comes out on top this time. Maybe a Split or Majority Decision.

Good timing I guess LOL. I just saw the thread, and commented on it. Didn't realize it was so fresh at the time. I think I had just logged on.

I think DeGale has progressed, Groves hasn't.

DeGale late stoppage when Groves gets knackered as he usually does.

Groves narrow points win for me, he just has James' number and their styles don't mix well for him IMO. That's as long as Groves is confident and works his jab again; Groves under Paddy would probably have been stopped by Degale.

Degales stamina isnt the greatest either, he often dips mid fight. Tho i totally agree degales moved on whilst groves has moved back.

Degale on points for me Groves has definitely lost something, since Froch sparked him.

Am I the only one who thought James won the first fight? I cant see anything other then a KO this time for James.

If the fight happened next for both men I'd say Degale easily on points.

Groves has the mental disadvantage of losing 3 world title fights and Degale won his title the first time he tried, that has to play a factor as the fight went on, plus you look at their recent fights Degale has looked comfortable against world champions where as Groves looks to start strong but then lose a lot of momentum towards the end.

This fight won't happen this year, Groves is in a new camp, new trainer and should want to re-establish himself in the division first and Degale will want to get a couple of good defences of his title in before anything else.

I had Degale winning and I think it was a fairly common opinion that he did enough to take a close decision. In his next fight he went life and death against Piotr Wilczewski, so I don't think he was in the same class as he is now. Groves may have gotten better too, but I don't think his improvement has been as significant and momentum isn't on his side.

Given the differences in their recent form and my view that Degale did enough to win the first bout, I'd back him to get an official win if they fought soon. However, he still seems to have a habit of switching off at times and giving away rounds through inactivity, and I believe Groves is good enough to exploit this and make things fairly close if Degale gives him enough opportunities; Degale should be mindful to stay busy more consistently and avoid underestimating Groves.

Yeah agree. I think it would simply come down to who's better on the night and who handles it the best. Both have shown that they can deal with an occasion.
I'm surprised that anybody would write off Groves' chances against a man he's fought twice and come out on top twice. I actually would Groves a SLIGHT favourite based on that fact alone. One good shot or one lapse in concentration by either fighter though would swing it - but then I guess that's true of the majority of fights.

It was a close fight but I don't think it was a 'common opinion' that Degale edged it; I had Groves winning narrowly, and I think he'd do the same again in a rematch if he worked his jab properly; James can't get past the jab comfortably IMO and the two styles don't gel well for James. That said, the Groves that fought Rebrasse, Douglin or Jack would probably get stopped by James.

Either way it's a fight that definitely captures the imagination of the public again IMO, later this year or next summer perhaps.

Looks pretty split in this thread, at least going by the posts. The poll is more one-sided (even then only a small majority had Groves winning) but as I mention in the thread I think there are reasons to believe that the poll is less representative. Also note that a boxing writer who was there (King Geedorah) indicated that opinion was split as to who won.

I don't mean to suggest that most thought Degale deserved it, but it's very easy to find examples of reasonable people scoring the fight for him, and virtually everyone who scored it another way had the bout even or to Groves by just a point or two.

Good post crusader.

Its definitely feasible that Degale underestimates George Groves twice.

Degale has the tools to defeat Groves, but isn't much better. He takes too much time off and his approach in the later rounds is going to lose him his belt eventually.

He promised he'd not take time in his last fight, then did it again. Obviously he's not got the engine to make Groves wilt and then stop him.

So I forecast another grinding 115-113 type score that can go either way.

I'd like to see either of them fight Arthur Abraham.

FWIW, I think DeGale would also beat Jack relatively comfortably.

Be interesting to see if Groves makes improvements under Shane McGuigan. Still go for Degale close points though.
