Anyone have the lowdown about what's happening with one of my favorites, Miguel Garcia, AKA Mikey?
I just realized that it's been 2 years since he last fought. A routine win over Juan Burgos in New York.
Since then the 2-division champion has been out of the ring, having sued Top Rank for vague "exploitative practices," and apparent unfair wages.
He's now 28 and has wasted two prime years that he'll never get back, no matter how any lawsuit turns out.
In that Burgos fight he was paid about $750,000 and was in line for maybe $1 million against then unbeaten Cuban Gamboa. Sounds pretty fair to me.
Mikey's quite talented but he's not a household name. He can't expect Mayweather, Pacquiao, Canelo or Cotto purses.
Most fighters would sell their souls for $750,000 + paydays.
And even a Pacquiao bout was being discussed for sometime in 2015. It would have been the purse of Mikey's life.
Drop the ridiculous legal action Mikey and climb back into the ring already. Don't let your skills and your prime erode because of your ego.
What's Up with Mikey?
Re: What's Up with Mikey?
I know his interest in boxing waned. He was good at it but did not love boxing. I heard he was training or wanting to become a police officer. That was a rumor I heard.

If true, he'll look back some years from now and want to give himself a kick in the rear for walking away from a very lucrative career.Lancenix wrote:I know his interest in boxing waned. I wonder if Haymon is in Garcia's ear counseling him to ride out the lawsuit and then grabbing him for the PBC.
I think I recall brother/trainer Robert Garcia saying he was still high on Mikey's future...about the same time he announced that he would no longer train the now unretired Brandon Rios.

"Issues with Top Rank" his own words
Re: What's Up with Mikey?
The kid clearly doesn't want to be a boxer and he doesn't care how much money he leaves on the table. If that's true then good for him. There are plenty of boxers out there that box to feed their families and don't have any other options for their careers. But, the thing that i don't understand is that Mikey must like the sport somewhat because he's been the main sparring partner for all of Robert's boxers around 140 lbs the last two years. It's strange.
