Read what i wrote,or are you punchdrunk, cooper NEVER!!!!!!! knocked out a TOP contender,ANY bum can put a top fighter on his ass, but knockout...now that`s a different story, and as for Thor`s hammer, like plenty others destroyed cooper, but when brian london knocked thor`s hammer out in the last round of their fight, the ringmaster rang the bell a full minute early.and johanson was gave the verdict...what about that then...you don`t know much ..typical... 8) :D :-?

Are you really as dumb as you sound?... Cooper stopped Joe Erskine, Brian London and Dick Richardson... all of whom were top 10 rated... you need to go back to school boy! 8) :TU:

I don't know Silkov, those Isles of Langerham are pretty powerful. And they have no association with brain power whatsoever.

Far from a bum. Problem was he was very small even for that era and his cuts were a constant problem.
Dempsey, besides Ingo, is there any European fighter of that era that one could argue was a better heavyweight than Henry Cooper? I personally can't think of one, but you probably have a better grasp of that era than I do.
Cooper was without doubt the best Heavyweight of the 60s... he beat Mildenburgher too in '68... though that was on a disq... when I've seen his fights I've been impressed by his speed and boxing abilities... he operated at a time when the heavyweight division was full of talent and to say he couldn't fight is a gross inaccuracy!.... :box: :box: :box:
Henry could fight, but "The best heavyweight of the 60s"?? Not even close. He purposefully avoided Liston(this is a matter of public record). Scanning his record, where are the victorys over the real top heavies like Patterson, Ingo, Ali, Liston, Williams, Terrell, Machen, DeJohn, Jones, Frazier, Bonavena, Spencer, Ellis, etc? Henry was decent, but not a first tier contender. Put him at the bottom of the top 10 of the 60s at best.

Like fellow contenders of his era, Zora Folley & Eddie Machen he could be erratic, sometimes losing to guys he should have beaten. Consistency
is what separates the great from the not so. I don't think he was a top 5 on the world scene, for any length of time but he certainly was top 10.
He had a way with the public though. A lot like Floyd Patterson in that respect. People liked him, and that made him box office. We don't have a lot of fighters like that around to-day. Too bad .

Cooper not only could`nt punch FACT,he had a glass jaw as well,he was a laughing stock, refused to fight all the big hitters of his era,but still was destroyed by nobodies like peter bates, another myth was he was stopped on cuts on many fights, not so,i got a fair few photo`s of cooper being carried back to his corner,.or flat on his back, against chancers,he lost to very poor fighters, refuses a world title shot by patterson early 60 refused liston, the only reason ali gave him a world title shot was because ali lost money fighting george churvaro, and came over here for a couple of easy fights.
look what happened when the wbc elimination tornament to find a new champion after ali in 1967,quarry,patterson,mildenberger,terrel,bonavena,ellis,martin,spencer,were chosen, but frasier, buster mathis,liston,churvalo,machen,folley.williams.de john, nono valdes, were not asked and all were far superior to cooper...the only chance cooper had, would have went to the states,(he NEVER did because he was to scared) and fought 2 or 3 of these top boys,to prove himself, but what did he do....imported a bum called Boston Jacobs(only had 10 fights in total) and hyped up he was a contenter, what a joke.
later 2 journey men came over here(picked cause they could`nt punch)and cooperwas easily beat..AGAINST BuMS..even put on his ass.Roger(the dodger)rischer, and amos johnson.

Cooper could punch, was a very small HW and certainly hit harder than some of the bigger guys. He was a good fighter in an era where everybody could beat everybody. Back then a champion really was a champion. His bigger weakness was that he cut easy. The guy who started this post, whatever your name is, why don't you actually find out some stuff about boxing before you post on here? It would be interesting to see who your greatest HW is because I bet you say Ali and in which case you blow up your whole argument because Cooper not only knocked him down but nearly stopped him if it hadn't been for some shifty stuff going on in the corner.

Mr. Lockhart is correct and if you combine some of those intangibles, that made him so popular with a lefthook that was a thing of beauty, then you have a very entertaining fighter.

This whole tread is a bit odd, what exactly is the myth of Henry Cooper?

For boxing fans outside of the UK, apart from the real hardcores, Cooper will be a foot note as the man who knocked down Ali. But even within the UK his reputation is based more on his heart and the fact he was seen as a man of the people, than on his place in the pantheon of all time great heavyweights.

The idea that he couldn't punch is particularly odd as when you take his size into account his record indicates he could certainly bang if nothing else.

cooper had one of the most underated left hooks of all time. did u ever see some of his fights? he put guys lights out with his left hook. cooper could really bang with that left hook.

and if u dont believe me, ask muhammad ali. ali faced huge punchers like foreman, shavers, liston, frazier, but it was a 185lb coopers left hook that came closest to knocking ali out. ali was hurt more by the cooper left hook than he was by fraziers left hook.
He would of stopped or beaten ALi too if they didn't do that glove cutting shit!

How do you figure? Are you believing the myth that Ali got extra time in the corner while they "replaced" the torn glove with a new one, thus giving him extra time? Guess what? IT DIDN'T HAPPEN! Ali was in his corner for 1 minute exactly. He received no extra recovery time and went out and beat the 'ell out of 'Enry. Don't believe me? Watch the films.

Ali was in the corner for 65 seconds instead of 60 seconds, and he was on his feet after 60 seconds. That's the myth of Henry Cooper.
That's true and when people mention the "extra time" etc you can tell they know fekk all about boxing. :o

I've known about it since Harry Carpenter's boxing series in the early 80's. If 'arry said it was 65 seconds then 65 seconds it was. But why people still choose to believe the myth has me stumped. Hang on, though, aren't there 100's of people turned away from David Icke's lectures on how the world is secretly run by a race of alien blood-drinking shape-shifting lizards? Some fekkers will believe anything.
