Anyone remember it's been the death anniversary of German boxer max. A little prayer for the great boxing contributor from all. The Man of honor.

Not sure there's really any need to bring up the anniversary of somebody's death, but I think you meant well so alright.

He was actually a good man. He and Joe Louis became good friends after retirement and Max actually supported Joe financially through the tough times Louis experienced because of the IRS....... which is another shady IRS story and a shameful way to treat an American hero.

I saw a documentary where they interviewed an old man who explained how Max was friends with his Father and hid he and others in his home and the Nazi soldiers did not search the home - because it was the home of Max Schmeling. The man started crying during the interview and I remember he said " Max Schmeling did what God could not do, he saved us"
Moving stuff

That's a great little story Ross, very touching. I had never heard that one before. Even in the most hellish of times and places, the good heart of man can make the difference between life and death for his fellow man. Thank you for sharing bud.

You play it... Tunney said, "I'm not a fighter -- I'm a boxer. Boxing is the game I play." ... Mayweather said, "My opponents are playing checkers. I'm playing chess." ... Schmeling said, "I don't disrespect anyone who steps into the ring to fight me. You need the heart of a lion to play this game."

I thought I was going mad for a moment. Max Schmeling has been gone for years and years. I tell you what. If we are going to be honouring the anniversaries of the deaths of past greats in boxing (and not just 10, 20, 50, 100 years etc) we're are going to be mighty busy!

Louis was a clever guy; i'll always remember him do the impossible on national TV; taking the mickey out of Ali.
