Is Andre Ward overrated ??
K,serious question,no hate and I like everyone else see him as the top SMW
Seeing him move up to LHW and people thinking he'd be Even pick with Kovalev, I'm curious who everyone sees as his top win - Dawson, Froch or Kessler ?
He gets lot of praise for winning tournament , but also had the most convenient matchmaking
Kessler was good win , but The guy has lost to Froch and Calzaghe- sloppy fight, but beating the one everyone perceived as the heir to Joe, Andre starts getting attention
Froch is good win, though judges see it way closer than most fans. But again Froch is solid fighter. But has losses , and was even behind on cards versus J. Taylor going into the 12th and would have lost the fight if Taylor beats count or even took a knee at the end
Dawson is one most people overlook, as Chad looked drained , but KO over a divisional champ still impressive , though Dawson has looked like crap since that fight
The rest of tourney wind were a joke Bika , blown up Abraham, and Green are type of guys Ward should never have a problem with
So curious why those three wins ,1 close and another weight drain have elevated Andre so much?
Personally I think a fight with Kovalev ends horribly for Ward who doesn't have beard of Hopkins or Pascal and won't see past round 8

Re: Is Andre Ward overrated ??
Ward is a good boxer with lack of power and a bad chin which causes all that clinching and dirty tactics.
Yes, he is overrated and will be smashed by Kovalev if he ever gets into the ring with the Krusher. Golovkin would beat him too.

His record is no worse than Kovalev's, Sergey beat a Jean Pascal who was clowned by a 48 and 49 year old Hopkins, he beat a couple of nobodies at LHW, his best win is against a 50 year old Hopkins.
So if you are going to discount Ward and basically say he doesn't deserve the hype he's getting then you have to do even moreso to justify Kovalev's hype.
Personally I like both of them, Kovalev has had to grow on me but he earned that after he beat my boy Hopkins so kudos to him but still I wouldn't sh*t on either of them as they are both good for the sport and will be headed for a clash down the line.
A win by either of them over one another would definitely elevate either to the top of the P4P chart miles ahead of GGG who has beaten nothing but C- and B level fighters.

I think he's overrated, some good wins but this P4P talk is over the top, he's not done anything for years. He won't beat Kovalev.
Re: Is Andre Ward overrated ??
Somewhat overrated. Winning S6 was a great achievement at the time but hardly ATG worthy. To have him at the near top on P4P list based on that for so many years is just silly. Now there is a chance for him to do something noteworthy again if he can be beat Kovalev. As you can see it takes lot of arm twisting to force him to do something noteworthy.

Re: Is Andre Ward overrated ??
I think Kov is overrated more.. there I said it, over to you Ikorolev, aka Kov
Ward has a better skillset but Ikorolev is correct that he doesn't bang hard enough.
I don't buy his china chin nonsense, there is nothing to support that, even including the Boone fight when he was raw and dealt with it anyway.
Unlike Chickenson.
Ward can be a dirty fighter and I'm sure he will be in this one too. There are holes for someone to exploit against Kovalev and Ward can do that for sure.

Wasn't implying kovalev resume was any better. Honestly I think they're pretty even at this point, edge to ward though

Re: Is Andre Ward overrated ??
Ward is overrated.
He has good handspeed and footwork, but he lacks power and is chinny. That's why he relies heavily on illegal tactics like head butts, hitting off the break and clamping his opponents' arms.
Without his illegal tactics, Ward wouldn't do any better than many others. That's why he demands home advantage - so he has a ref who permits him to foul.
He's refused PED testing in the Super Six and again against Rodriguez, which makes his suspect. He seems to have a lot of injuries in recent years, and he's not that old yet, so it may have something to do with PED use.

I wouldn't say he was overrated.
He has as many critics & detractors as he has fans; in fact, I kind of think he has more critics.

Re: Is Andre Ward overrated ??
not overrated just think he got lucky that the style of fighters in his weight suited him, i fancy kovalev to beat him
Re: Is Andre Ward overrated ??
I don't think he's overrated, it's not just who he's beaten it's also the way he's beaten them. I don't know what's happened to him though, whether it's bad management or what.

I wonder how much you will be riding Kov's coattail if he beats Ward, I bet you'd be right along Ikey (y'all might be the same person) saying how Kov's the Greatest P4P in the sport based on this win.Freedom2013 wrote:Ward is overrated.

No he's a very accomplished professional, and has beaten several very good fighters handily.

One of the most frustrating men in boxing. He's seemingly taken advice from Rigondeaux on how to derail your own career.
People who have him ranked in the top of their pound for pound lists are over rating the guy.

So Kessler lost to Froch, huh? Did you bother mentioning that he also had a win against Froch? No, because that wouldn't support your agenda. Also, what the f*ck does it matter that he lost to Calzaghe? When has that ever been a knock against anyone? The only thing losing to Calzaghe proves is that you aren't a literal god. Like yeah, Bernard Hopkins was good, a first ballot hall of famer, top 50 p4p all-time, most middleweight title defenses ever, oldest to win a championship ever, but he lost to Calzaghe, so he must be pretty mediocre.Leatherface wrote:Kessler was good win , but The guy has lost to Froch and Calzaghe- sloppy fight, but beating the one everyone perceived as the heir to Joe, Andre starts getting attention

Yes, beating the #1 fighters in two different divisions is impressive. Probably more impressive than you're making it out to be. That's one thing Sergey Kovalev has not done. Not has Golovkin.
Re: Is Andre Ward overrated ??
Of course, Krusher and 3G will be hard put trying to find a champion from the weight class above them as ignorant as Dawson.Lackeos wrote:So Kessler lost to Froch, huh? This line of "who beat who" could also lead one to belittle Ward's win over Dawson, seeing as how the guy who was clowned by Old Man Hopkins had also clearly beaten Dawson.Undefeated49-0 wrote: His record is no worse than Kovalev's, Sergey beat a Jean Pascal who was clowned by a 48 and 49 year old Hopkins, he beat a couple of nobodies at LHW, his best win is against a 50 year old Hopkins.

Notice how I did not belittle either Kov or Ward, I just said that neither man's resume stood that much over the other's to paraphrase.squiggy wrote:This line of "who beat who" could also lead one to belittle Ward's win over Dawson, seeing as how the guy who was clowned by Old Man Hopkins had also clearly beaten Dawson.Undefeated49-0 wrote: His record is no worse than Kovalev's, Sergey beat a Jean Pascal who was clowned by a 48 and 49 year old Hopkins, he beat a couple of nobodies at LHW, his best win is against a 50 year old Hopkins.

Re: Is Andre Ward overrated ??
Really, these conversations should always pause to salute Hopkins, without whose willingness to fight, Kovalev would likely still be rounding up Cleverlys and Caparellos to slap around.
Re: Is Andre Ward overrated ??
Hard to say a guy is overrated when nobody has beaten him, or even come close. How do we know he ISN"T great?
He fights in kind of an ugly style that does come very close to flouting the rules in some respects, but the guy does so with remarkable acumen. He is hardly the first guy to use a combination of hand speed, angles, clinching, and his head, but most others before him were significantly easier to beat it would seem, that has to count for something.

There's a shocker Diddy, you having yet another pop at euro boxers. The U.S are just not the force they were anymore just let it go fella.diddy wrote:If you're a white euro blowhard then yes...overrated. If you have half a brain...not overrated.
For the purpose of this thread I agree Ward is better. On a wider scale you should give some credit to Euro boxers as you seem bitter about it and I'm not sure for what reason.

I do think it's hilarious though, relentless crybabies in here can't face the truth. Ward is great, and that fact is only going to be enhanced.
