What do you consider to be the top 5 greatest wins of all time? Taking into account the performance, opponent, significance of the fight etc.

Frazier beating Ali and Duran beating Leonard spring to mind for me.

The greatest might be Louis-Schmeling II. The whole world was watching at the dawn of WWII. To Hitler a Schmeling win would have helped cement his views of Aryan superiority. To the Americans, Joe's definitive victory, together with Jesse Owens' performance in the Berlin games, proved America's strength. In addition Louis' victory was a shot in the arm for the African American community.

Ali-Liston (a huge upset that began an era and, together with the Beatles U.S. arrival, ushered in "the sixties" in February 64)

I would rate Greb's victory over Walker highly, too. Greb was past his best, had one good eye, but came out on top against a prime top-20-ish all-time great.

Frazier prevailing over Ali in The Big One is clearly tops.

Also agree that Duran beating Leonard in Montreal was extra special. That scene was electric.

Patterson becoming the first heavyweight to regain the title by knocking out Ingo was also a great win.

Ali over Foreman, Rocky over JJW, Louis taking out Schmeling, Dempsey smashing Willard, and Corbett over Sullivan also come to mind.

i think the single greatest win of all time
was ali-foreman. ali frazier I was a great
fight between two equal athletes, ali foreman
was bambi going to the slaughter house.
it was the fights preceding this one that
build the story. ali ageing, not being able
to defeat joe, while foreman hardly needed
to break sweat to humiliate both joe and ken.

i see schmeling - louis II as the by far biggest
win in terms of geo politics, but nothing can
top ali foreman in terms of boxing drama.

Salvador Sanchez's victory over Wilfredo Gomez at Caesars Palace was highly significant for a few reasons. It brought him in to the mainstream and it was a bout between two all-time greats in their prime. I would describe that a "great, great win".

I would also nominate Evander Holyfield's victory in the 2nd fight with Riddick Bowe. Although it was a strange old night, it was a great performance by Holyfield when he defeated a bigger, younger & stronger man. It showed how great both the sport of boxing can be, and how Holyfield himself as a truly great fighter.

Gomez was moving up in weight against a bigger, younger man. It was a very good win, not great.

Indeed, but Gomez was coming of 13 straight defenses of the WBC Super Bantamweight title, beating a good standard of opposition (stopping all of them them) along the way - and in doing cemented his place as probably the greatest Super Bantamweight of all time. He only moved up a single weight class, was unbeaten at the time and Gomez was the favourite going in to the fight.

It is also worth pointing out that Gomez would later go on to win the WBC Featherweight title (once held by Sanchez) and moved up yet another division to win the WBC Super Featherweight title as well.

All things considered, yeah - it was a great win.

Degree of difficulty should be the primary factor, not necessarily significance. Greb and Armstrong simply should not have been able to dominate larger alltime greats Tunney and Ross, but they did. Robinson shouldn't have been able to KO Gene Fullmer with one punch. Saddler shouldn't have been able to demolish Willie Pep in there first bout.

Others I'd add. Both of Fighting Harada's wins over Eder Jofre, which were wider than the official scores.

The great Bob Fitzsimmons of England "Solar Plexus Punch" victory over James J. Corbett in 1899 gotta be one of the top ten greatest wins and accomplishments of all time in boxing history.

He was the first middleweight champion to win the heavyweight crown. And also the sport first triple crown titlist in history. An amazing feat.
