2016 Boxing=zzzZZZ...zzzZZZ...zzzZZZ

Post by caldo2025 »

I wouldn't say that i'm exactly thrilled with boxing so far this year. Each weekend, I check the schedule hopeful something's on...anything. It looks like it picks up in mid March but these first two months stink. Are we going to start calling Jan & Feb Boxing's off season now after the last few years?

There are some big fights looming for late in the year but i'm not seeing much else in Boxing's pipeline and we usually do by now, right? Or am I just being impatient?

What kind of year is it going to be for Boxing? Should we be nervous?

January and February do tend to be slow, and this year does seem slower than normal, but I am optimistic about 2016. I see no cause for alarm.

Yep it is why boxing is about as relevant as bowling these days. The difference being the best bowlers have no choice but to bowl against one another. Where as in boxing the best guys avoid each other especially North Americans and no fights get made except for the crap put on TV. Like Danny Garcia vs. Robert Guerrerro and people act like it is a big fight. That was just more boxing garbage.

I agree.

I'm very disappointed in the very small number of interesting matchups scheduled for the new year.

The selfish promoters and managers such as Bob Arum and Al Haymon, the sanctioning organizations like the WBC and WBA and the TV networks such as HBO and Showtime don't care at all about what the fans want.

Fans want fights like:

Kovalev-Stevenson
Stevenson-Fonfara II
GGG-Alvarez
GGG-Jacobs
Crawford-Postol

I like those fights. We still might get two or more of them this year.

I like how 2016 is shaping up for boxing.

Slowest star to a year I've seen in all the time I've been following the sport. I started following the sport in late 2001, and have followed it hardcore since 2002 onward. Every year from 2002 to now pretty much had more action in January than this one will have had in 2 months.

But even in good years the early months of the year are slow for Boxing

I take that as a compliment coming from you, Farcenix.

There are plenty of good fights scheduled and likely to happen this year.

Quigg v Frampton may lead to an even bigger fight (maybe a rematch).

Sometimes v Porter should be an eliminator for Brook later in the year.

Pac v Ramming Speed III is going to be a great fight, IMO, and may lead to Ramming Speed v Porter or Sometimes or Danny or Brook or Khan or GingerHead later in the year.

Khan v GingerHead will be entertaining, even if it only lasts a round.

Fury v Wlad II will lead to something good later.

Haye v anyone is interesting.

Wilder v anyone is interesting.

That's just the tip of what is happening. It has started slow but I am optimistic about 2016.

It's not that bad, actually. You have some prospects also getting challenged this year.

Valdez vs. Gradovich
Diaz vs. Velez
Ramirez vs. Abraham
Spence Jr. vs. Algeri (might happen)
Williams vs. Charlo (J-Rock just entered an eliminator for the IBF title)
Verdejo vs. Silva (Silva is very unknown, but I've seen video of him. He might be a legitimate threat).

Then you have some good fights and possible fights coming up.

Lomachenko vs. Walters (supposedly already signed)
Quigg vs. Frampton
Kovalev vs. Ward
Thurman vs. Porter
Gonzalez vs. Arroyo
Fury vs. Klitschko: II
Wilder vs. Povetkin (if Wilder doesn't vacate first)
Pacquiao vs. Bradley: III
Nietes vs. Estrada (read that his promoter is looking at making this fight)
Golovkin vs. Canelo (happens this year or never)
Vargas vs. Salido/Gamboa/Miura (I read GBP is having these guys in mind)

I pay little to no attention to "the pre-fight build up and hype" beyond reading about it on here and possibly commenting.

Haye and Wilder are entertaining boxers. Haye is one of the most gifted boxers of any era. Few men of his size have ever had his speed, footwork and power. No matter how irritating he may be outside the ring, he is an amazing athlete to watch work.

Wilder is exciting to watch because he is so raw and his legs are so spindly for his height that I am always on the edge of my seat waiting for him to get clipped.

Things can always be improved upon but people who think that boxing is a shambles should take time to seriously evaluate their positions. We are the luckiest fans in the history of boxing. We have more access to more good fights from around the globe than ever. There are more skilled boxers, more events, and more fans than ever.

The HW division is stronger and more interesting than it has been in a long time. SOGgy and Krusher appear to be on a collision course. Rigo fights in England a couple of weeks after Quigg v Frampton. Might that be the entree for Rigo v the winner?

The welter weight division is going off and the results will lead to more fireworks later this year. Terence Hitman Jr Crawford is always entertaining and is on course for a big fight later this year.

Honestly, the pessimism is humorous given the reality of the situation.

The reality is a multi-belt era that has four world titlists and then some is clearly anti-competition. If people are hungry they'll gladly accept scraps and that is the scenario here. I agree what you say about the quantity of fights available on tv but the quality is not there. There are 17 divisions in boxing and there should be fights between bona fide top ten contenders every week. Boxing's not delivering. Why pretend otherwise?
