Good tall body punchers

Post by handsofstone »

Watched the 1st Harding/Andries fight earlier, superb fight and the 1st time i'd seen either guy box, what impressed me most about Jeff in the fight was his superb body punching, especially seeing as he was so tall

Any other good big/tall body punchers?

Arguello and Pedrosa would be the other two obvious ones that come to mind

Depends what you define as tall? Andries greatest opponent was Tommy Hearns who was an underestimated body puncher, great left to the body. So did Ezzard Charles.

Others that I can think of straight away, Joe Frazier, George Chuvalo, at lighter weights but still quite tall there was Arguello, Pedroza and obviously McCallum. Historically Bob Fitzsimmons is considered to be the first great body puncher, he was quite tall. More recently Paul Williams had good body attack, so did DLH and Corrales. Hopkins as well, especially against Keith Holmes and his knock out of DLH.

Thanks, Barry - the best body puncher I've seen was Chavez Snr though Zarate hospitalised a couple of opponents, Hearns had been mentioned by a few and he was wicked. Moorer on the way up was just an incredibly hard puncher. Henry Wharton had a big left hook and Calzaghe did some damage, he'd mix the punches up and drop a sneaky left hand in - he hurt Kessler to the body.

Ive been watching the Harding/Andries fights this week, just watched the rematch tonight and Moorer was ringside supporting Dennis,as you probably know both men were trained by Manny Steward

Great fights BTW i'll watch the 3rd fight tomorrow

Those three fights are incredible. If you stuck them in the ring together a hundred times you'd not be able
To predict the outcome other than war. It's almost like all three fights are the perfect continuation of each other. They literally pick up where they left off.

What's odd for me is the end result of
The third fight. It was razor thin yet the loser's top flight career almost died yet the winner's carried on.

5'11 1/2" is hardly tall for a light heavyweight - Andries was shorter and fought low, so I guess Harding would have looked tall by comparison.

Good calls. Cesar Bazan was a very good body puncher and in-fighter, too. Just lacked durability.

I was going to cite the best of them, Mr Mike McCallum, but he's 5' 11 1/2" too, so I thought he didn't qualify as tall, as to have to be 6' 00" to be officially tall!! :D

At 5'8" Danny "Little Red" Lopez was tall for a featherweight and all you have to do is watch his second fight with David "Poison" Kotey to learn all you need to know about him and body-punching.
