Roy Jones to fight a fan for $100,000 on "Legends" of boxing, MMA & wrestling PPV
On March 20, former heavyweight champion of the world Roy Jones Jr. will step into a boxing ring in Phoenix and start trading punches with a fan.
If the fan beats Jones, he can take home $100,000.
That might sound insane to many people. But tough guys who believe they are the biggest, baddest man around will see this as a great chance to earn good money.
Either way, the boxing match, sponsored by UR Fight, is very real. The event is part of a program featuring legends from the boxing, MMA and pro wrestling in a pay-per-view broadcast.
Jones, 47, is the only competitor who will be fighting a fan. If you have the right stuff — or just have nothing to lose — you can submit a 90-second video to the "Fight Roy Jones Jr. Contest" explaining why, in the words of UR Fight, "you're worthy of getting in the ring with a legend."
Before you rush out to film that video, here's what Jones has to say.
"Why in the world would someone sign up to get in front of me and do what I do? I don't know," he says in a video posted on the URshow.tv website. "$100,000 is at stake if you can put me on my back for the count. It's not going to happen, but you can try."
Jones had a 62-9 mark as a professional, with 45 knockouts, and he won titles in several different divisions, including heavyweight.

How much lower are you going to fall Roy?

I won't go easy on him in the video, but I figure I'll be hoping for him to go easy on me in the ring. Even a shot Roy Jones will likely be a handful for a guy like me in a Boxing match. I want to find out though.Redback Rasta wrote:Go easy on him won't you.The Revival wrote:I plan on sending in a video to challenge him. I've already heard about this

why on earth is he doing this. next he
will fight in strip-clubs. someone will
hurt him one day.
does he need the money so badly??

This is truly horrible. A legend sullying his reputation even more. What boxing fan would want to seriously fight RJJ at that age? Disgraceful.
He must be completely broke.

I think they will pick someone he can comfortably beat...if Bowe has even 10% of his power left he would kill Jones.
Roy Jones jnr is now insane in my book. I can't believe he is doing this.

Bowe's shot to pieces, he makes Jones Jr look like he's in his prime.Tomasino wrote:Combray wrote:Riddick Bowe's been saying on Twitter that he's up for it

Horrible to read that Roy has hit a new low.
He was that good in his prime I always thought if he went on too long as most do, his reputation and legacy wouldn't be affected.
I'd hate to think in 20 years time we remembered this farcical end of RJJ career as opposed to his sublime prime.

how backwards is that... what a way to make sure you further ruin your legacy by doing something as foolish as this.
Re: Roy Jones to fight a fan for $100,000 on "Legends" of boxing, MMA & wrestling PPV
I have no boxing experience at all, but I'd offer $100,000 to somebody who can beat me if I get to hand pick the guy in question. Hey, I'll offer a million dollars, why not. If I get to choose them from a lot of submitted videos there's no way I'm picking someone I could lose to.

Wasn't this how he found of most of his opponents back in the 90's?

Whereas John L Sullivan would march into a place and declare "I can lick any sob in the house", this is more like marching in and declaring, "There's sure to be at least one man here I can lick, I'll let you know when I find him."

Roy might be shot. But he could still beat three Charlie Zs at the same time.Evander wrote:It would be absolutely hilarious if Charlie Z showed up and beat Roy, we'd never here the end of it ... I can see the videos now

But Roy hasn't beaten Deontay Wilder, one of the Mayweather's and have a record of 113-0 like Charlie doesRedback Rasta wrote:Roy might be shot. How many times do the history books focus on when Sugar Ray Robinson was shot? It's certainly sad to see once great fighters go down this road in their twilight years, but for the most part the effect it has on their legacy is minimal at best. No matter what, people will always remember who this guy was in his prime, and how good he used to be.Redback Rasta wrote:It was a great legacy. In time people may overlook Roy's decline into a circus act when they are assessing his career. But the current generation will take the latter stuff into account because it is fresh in our minds.

I remember Evander Holyfield being nowhere near the fighter he used to be by the end. Hasn't hurt my memory of how good he was at his best.Redback Rasta wrote:I'd like to say I agree with you. Re: Roy Jones to fight a fan for $100,000 on "Legends" of boxing, MMA & wrestling PPV
The jig is up - Roy Jones will be forced to fight someone with a pro record
The Arizona State Boxing & MMA Commission is scheduled to review a licensing application Thursday from a digital network seeking to stage a pay-per-view bout on March 20 featuring Roy Jones Jr. against an undetermined opponent who would collect $100,000 if he beats the former world champion.
Matthew Valenzuela, executive director of the Arizona Commission, said Tuesday that the state’s regulatory agency has received all of the required documents from URShow.tv.
“Fees have been paid, everything is good,’’ Valenzuela said.
When news of the planned event at Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix surfaced nearly two weeks ago, there were reports that Jones would be fighting a “random fan” selected through Facebook voting.
However, Valenzuela said Jones’ opponent would have to have a proven record as a professional boxer.
