When Max Baer came to London town (1937)

Post by Caractacus »

It is perhaps little known nowadays, but England really liked Max Baer back in the day.
Even after he lost the Heavyweight Championship to James J. Braddock,
The English had invited him over in 1936 for a possible fight with Walter Nuesul or Empire Champion Jack Petersen.
(who in the meantime lost the Empire title to Ben Foord in August 1936)
But on March.2.1937 ,"The Livermore Laruper" sailed on a ocean liner to London to fight the winner
of the Ben Foord vrs Tommy Farr match.

Check this brief clip out.

One of the main reasons that Max Baer had been invited to England earlier was to star in a new motion picture entitled
THE BAER IDEA
which began filming at Highbury Studios in London shortly after his bout with Tommy Farr in April 1937.
(I had previously been unaware of this film(now lost ?),but it also starred former British and Empire Heavyweight Champon Billy Wells)
here is a link to the only known still of the film.

(BTW The chap in the lower left with the tattoos and beetling brows looks like he may have been once a puglist too,
can anyone here identify this individual ?)

Could it be the former Britsh Heavyweight Champion Gunner Moir ?
He would have been 58 years old in 1937 and also had a massive tatoo on his chest.

Only a few weeks after his fight with Tommy Farr,Max Bar fought Ben Foord.
May-27-1937
(this was said to have been Max Baer's best ring performance since he had knocked out Max Schmeling in 1933)
and listen carefully to hear his war whoop !
