Lennox Lewis' Amateur record and losses

Post by dawudbryant »

Hi, I've heard Lewis' record as 85-7, 85-9 and 94-11, however after some research I found one of his losses was a walkover so doesn't count. The only actual losses I have found evidence of is the following.

Donovan Razor Ruddock pts (Later avenged by KO)
Tyrell Biggs pts (Later avenged by KO)
Ulli kaden pts (Later avenged by KO)
Jose Luis Gonzales pts (Later avenged on points)
Valeriy Abadzhyan ko3
Petar Stoymenov pts
Vyacheslav Yakovlev pts

And this one I'm not certain about.
Alexander Miroshnichenko pts

So thats possibly 8 losses accounted for. Does anyone know his actual record? I think in his book he says his record was 85-9 but I just wanted to confirm it and to see if anyone knows of anymore of his losses.

Thanks

Actually, a loss does count, if it was in a tournament.

Lennox had three fights in Sweden - nil defeats. Thus, this may be of interest for you.
Check here for two of the fights: http://www.mrboxhist.se/boxare/lennox-lewis/

In the finals of Stockholm Box Open (SBO) 1987 he won by the way of KO in the third over Alexander Burmistrov from Soviet Union.

BTW, his opponent in the semi of SBO 1987 was a decent Swedish amateur - Håkan Brock. Brock was Mike Tysons last opponent before Iron Mike turned pro. Tyson won but it was a close one in Tampere, Finland.

Excellent, thanks for the info guys. Surely a walkover shouldn't be included on their actual record because the fights never happened. Its like David Haye being 0-2 to Tyson Fury cos he twice withdrew.

Another thing I wondered is what does AB stand for? I saw on Lewis' record a win by AB 2 and another by AB1.

Thanks

I'm thinking Lewis' record was more likely 85-9 than 94-11 because I've been able to track down 8 losses including the one w/o loss. So thats 9 losses all accounted for, but to me that should really be 8 losses so 85-8, and its impressive that in the 4 rematches he got he got revenged every time. Its a shame he didn't get a rematch with the 3 russians and 1 Bulgarian that beat him.

AB = TKO

Of course a w.o. should be included in the recordlist IF it is in a tournament.
For example: NN vs XX in the Quarter, thus according to some sort of injury NN is unable to fight in the next match - than it is YY vs NN in the Semi as an w.o.

I dont agree. In k1 where they fight in tournaments they dont include w/o as a win or loss nor in prizefighter. If u forfeit the match u just dont fight. But to get a loss recorded on your record i think isnt right. That may be how it works in amateur boxing but I think it doesn't make sense.

We are talking about amateur boxing not K1 or some other form of martial arts. Every sport has it own set of rules. You may found them right or wrong, but that is not the issue here. A walk-over should be recorded if happens in a tournament. Should a walk-over in semi-finals of the Olympics be regarded as a non-event?

Here is a pretty good record compilation made mostly by former canadian coach/historian Matt Mizerski which lists 60 wins and 10 losses, plus 5 walk over wins. Mizerski said there was probably not more than 20 more bouts in Lewis' overall record.

Lewis lost the final of the 1988 Intercup tournament in West Germany to Miroshnichenko. The russian had also beaten Riddick Bowe prior to the Olympics but then lost to Bowe in the semifinals.

AB is "Abandoned", the same as the official name "RET/Retirement", eg the coach throws in the towel, etc. Nowadays it´s labelled TKO.

I just watched Lennox Lewis' fight with Vernon Linklater.
According to Matt Mizerski's record lewis was 26-2 going into that fight. However the commentators give Lewis' record as 42-7. So if thats true then Lennox's real record was 82-16. 66 wins recorded by Mizerski including 10 losses, plus an exra 5 losses from before his bout with Linklater and one walkover loss which Mizerski doesn't have on his record when Lewis forfeited a bout for third Place vs Ladislav Husarik (CZE) in the TSC Tournament,Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle, Berlin, GDR,October 01-07, 1986. Taking off all walkovers his record would be 77-15.
Not quite as good as the 85-9 he claims.

Just watched his bout vs Tyrell Biggs from the 1984 olympics. Howard Cossell says his record is 59-5. According to Matt Mizerski's record Lewis was 29-2 and only had a walkover vs Linklater and the win over Mohammed Yousef since his win over Linklater i mentioned before. The commentators on the Linklater fight say lewis going in was 42-7 then after beating linklater, and getting a w/o vs the same opponent, then the Youssef fight should've made him 45-7 not 59-5. So Cossells sources give him 14 more wins and make 2 losses dissappear lol.
Damn this is tiring.

You can never trust people´s amateur records. Most boxers will "forget" a couple of losses and add some victories to their actual record. The same with promoters who will also add a fantastic number of knockouts :TU: .

Loool so whose record should we go by? Matt Mazerski? You said he reckons that Lewis had another 20 bouts that he hasn't recorded. Did he say whether they were wins?

Thanks

You can "Take it or leave it"! I'm 24(11)-15(3)-1 as amateur. The State (Connecticut) championships one year...we have three entries. Jeff Leak (#2 in New England), Andre Skeeter (he would later beat John Scully) and myself. 156lbs. I went to the opening and they somehow "draw" to decide. I got the bye.
Jeff met Andre and was soon on the floor; got up...wins decision.
I go home expecting that I am boxing Jeffrey next day. I go back to Waterbury, and go thru physical and get weighted and then a official comes up to me explains Jeff beat-up and all marked from previous night. The Doctor refuse him.
They give the trophy to me by "walkover".
I used to not count it or think about it..but..I may-as-well count that. Gives me one more "win".
But..that's what a "walkover" is. I have other WALKOVERS too but, no 'name' to attach to it so...no use taking it "serious".
I was expecting a really hard fight and traveled "medium" distance (twice) and that happen!
But, it ISN'T SERIOUS what "EVER" anyone decide to do there with stats.

By the way, I'm sure that MARVIS FRAZIER beat Lennox on decision. You can do the research and learn at what time line that happened.

Are you sure about that? Marvis last fought as an amateur in 1980 at the Olympic trials, he turned pro the same year. Lewis was only 15 in 1980 and was fighting as a junior. Frazier is 5 years older.

I'm sure. Others will REMEMBER that result. It could of been "something" Junior.
I actually have Marvis on the phone once (he wrote me a beautiful letter, too!). I asked him about that. "Certain".

That doesn't make sense though, Frazier was too old to be a junior when Lewis was a junior. Lewis turned pro 9 years after Frazier. When Lewis was 15 Frazier was competing in the Olympic trials and then turned pro.
