Because it's a mismatch. At 147 it would be a mismatch, at 154 it's ludicrous.
The weight wouldn't be a problem, people get so crazy over a few pounds. Marquez timing at his age and out this long would be my concern.

The weight wouldn't be a problem? You don't think that Cotto being 25 lbs heavier on fight night is a problem?

25 pounds? Lol, it certainly wouldn't be that much. And no, 10-15 pounds wouldn't make it a mismatch.

would like to see JMM just retire really. no needs for this fight to take place imo, cotto has fought good opposition lately whereas JMM hasn't even been active so can't really see why roach wants to make this fight, unless as mentioned its just a tune up

The weight difference actually isn't THAT big. Assuming the fight is contested at 154, Marquez probably weighs in slightly under that, around 150, while Cotto probably weighs in at 154 and weighs somewhere around 155-160 at fight time.

Not as big a difference as Khan/Canelo, where Canelo will probably blow up to 170+ after the weigh-in.

Either way, I'm not particularly interested in watching this. Marquez is 42 years old (potentially 43 by the time this fight happens) and unless he's juiced to the gills I don't see how he beats Cotto coming off a 2-year layoff.

It's a fight that we will all watch even though it won't mean much.

Unless JMM shocks us all and pulls the upset.

Which he won't.

Early stoppage for Miguel, who will enjoy an even bigger physical advantage
over JMM than the one Canelo had (and used to win) over him.

Miguel, even now is too big, too fast, and too strong for Juan.

One last money grab for JMM, plain and simple.

Stupid fight. Just names trying to sell names.

JMM VS Garcia (147)
Cotto VS Lara (154)

Why is it that I'm a better matchmaker than ALL the matchmakers in boxing?

Cotto/Lara would be great, but the odds of Cotto taking that fight are slim to none.

That would be solid, and I'd be glad to see one of my favorite fighters in Provodnikov get a big payday

- Nobody wants to see Lara save his lady like friends who love to watch him run and pose as a fighter.

Shame is that had he been born American, he could have co-run/co-ducked against TUE to take a bogus decision and been the money anchor for Haymon into the '20s. Oh to be able to American Dream about all his Bayless refereed "events."

I love the idea of one of my favorites getting a payday, but that
is a beating I'd rather not see Provo take.

I wanted to see Provo vs Herrera 2 myself. I thought that was agreed to.

I haven't heard anything on cotto/Provo, but the Herrera rematch is pretty dead in the water.

Since we're not getting Crawford/Postol, how about Provo/Postol? Or Provo/Mattysse II? I don't see that much appeal in a Herrera rematch.

More appeal in the Herrera rematch than a Matthysse rematch for me personally. I always thought Provo deserved the decision over Herrera the first time, and didn't get it.

Lucas Matthysse beat the sh*t out of Provodnikov and took years off of his career.

Huh???

Last I recall that fight was very close and they both beat each other.

The scores were close, but they don't accurately reflect the gap in damage done. Lucas Matthysse did overwhelmingly more damage to Provodnikov in that fight than Provodnikov did to him.

By appearances yes he did do more damage to an already softened up by Bradley Provo. If anyone could see anything in that Bradley fight is that Provo with his high cheekbones and propensity for swelling that it would be a continual problem for him as he continue taking punishment to his face, he swelled up much in the fashion that Gatti did.

A boxer had to just barely skim Gatti and he cut open almost instantaneously around the eyes, Provo fared no better and both of them have very high cheekbones.

Still that fight was close as they come and cosmetic damage doesn't tell the entire story.

No, but things like this do. In Round 6 Matthysse landed 42 punches to 7 from Provodnikov. 6 times more punches. Add on top of that his punches landed harder and cleaner than Provo's did all night.

I'm a huge Provodnikov fan, and was rooting for him that night, but he got his ass kicked. Bradley didn't do anywhere near as much damage to Provodnikov as Matthysse did. The Matthysse fight is the worst punishment I've ever seen Provodnikov take by far.

One round where it was that big of a disparity is not indicative of an asskicking, yes I agree Provo looked worse for wear after that fight vs the Bradley fight and he should've for two reasons:

1. LM hits much harder than Bradley
2. Bradley had already softened up Provo, go look at the damage on his face after that fight, he was swollen like a balloon.

Truly scary, dude has no real defense whatsoever but I'll always love fighters who despite their handicapped defensive skills that they come to fight win or lose and give it their all.

Provo will always be a favorite of mine just as Boom Boom Mancini will.

First thing that sprung to mind was what weight are they going to do this at, Marquez barely looks like he can make 147 let alone anything higher.
It has seniors tour written all over it and looks like both are cashing in their chips before retirement.
