$15,000 reward for the return of Carmen Basilo and Tony Zale's stolen belts...

Post by Redback Rasta »

6 championship belts were stolen from the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, NY, on November 5, 2015.

4 belts were won by Carmen Basilio and 2 belts by Tony Zale.

The Zale and Basilio families ask all involved in boxing to be on the look-out for them and contact them directly, if they have any information.

There is a $15,000 reward offered for the safe return of all six belts.

The value of the belts to the families of these champions is priceless.

It is just beyond belief someone could be so bloody low. Supposedly a boxing fan too because they did attend the event.

What is the reward for the belt that the Bronze Coward Wilder has? Or the MW belt that the Mexican chicken has at middleweight? They are holding these belts hostage with their cowardly actions and the commissions let them do it. So they should give the belts back to the rightful owners in the each respective division. As for these belts I would bet that it was an inside job.

Anyone who steals anything is a low life loser but does this really affect the lives of these 2 boxers ? They are old men now. Really old men. As in not even alive.

What about their families who cherish these items and despaerately want to keep them in the family for generations to come? Put yourself in their position and tell me you wouldn't care someone had stolen them.

the market value of those 2 belts is obviously worth much more than $15k, and
i would guess the black market value, even being a fraction of the market value,
would be about $15k if someone knew where to fence them and it isn't an inside
job. i doubt the thieves would anonymously return the belts for the $15k reward.
the $15k must be an appeal for someone to rat on the thieves, like "any info leading
to the arrest of" type reward? i can't imagine there are lots of private collectors
of stolen championship belts out there willing to pay a lot for them, so fencing
them would be very specialized. this reeks of an inside job for insurance money.
it's so cheap to embed tiny RFID tags on things these days it's crazy things like
this keep happening.

Only a true boxing fan would see the worth in them ($$$ wise) and I doubt a true boxing fan would buy them knowing they had been stolen, and they would only have to do a quick Google search to find that out even if they didn't already know.

Exactly. Good luck selling these. And you're right. Something like this that is valuable yet accessible to the masses needs some sort of RFID protection. Let it be known where they are kept that these items will hold know monetary value if stolen. Tho your insurance money thought could be accurate - but I think that's giving people too much credit as a whole. Most crooks are dumb.

who buys those famous paintings stolen from museums?
they can't show them to many people without getting caught. it has to be someone with lots of
money who for ego or other reasons just likes to have important stuff. every once in a while
they find retired postal workers with hundreds of mail bags in their basements. it's hard to analyse
why some people do things, but there are people out there with lots of money who will buy important
things that they only plan to keep for themselves or to show to a select group of people. in 1990,
some guys dressed as cops told security guards at the i.s. gardner museum in boston that they were
responding to a call and the guards let them in. the fake cops then tied up the guards and stole 13 works
of art worth $500,000,000. one vermeer painting alone was worth $200,000,000. none of that stuff
has ever been found. either they fenced it successfully, or it's sitting in some dusty attic someplace
all rotting away. they have caught some people with stolen expensive stuff, before. you don't have to
be the biggest art lover to buy stolen art, and i would imagine you don't have to be the biggest boxing
fan to buy stolen boxing memorabilia.

IMO the belts were most likely stolen by dishonest nobodies who just saw an opportunity and took it. Their own mates are probably equally dishonest and showing their mates probably presents no risk to them.

i remember when michael jordan's father was murdered after pulling over at a
highway rest stop to take a nap in his car. the guys were caught when video
popped up of them at a party showing off the NBA championship ring they stole
from him after killing him. if they are showing it off to their idiot mates, i would say
it won't be long before someone talks or takes a phone pic and shows someone.
the minute you show someone, you're doomed. i think mark twain said two people
can keep a secret if one of this is dead. people talk.

Let's hope people do talk and the belts end up back in the hands of their rightful owners.
