Archie Moore, the former light heavyweight champion, was talking about heavy punchers recently. Moore, who fought 215 bouts in a career dating from 1936 to 1965, rated the hardest hitters he faced: Curtis (Hatchet Man) Sheppard; Lloyd Marshall; Yvon Durelle, and Rocky Marciano. In that order.
''Sheppard's was the best single punch I ever got hit with,'' Moore said. ''A right to the jaw. I fell on my face and just did beat the count. I don't know why, but the front of my thighs hurt for a week after that bout. Felt like I got hit with a baseball bat.'' Moore won both his bouts with Sheppard, in 1946 and 1947, by decision.
Moore called Marciano ''a very well-conditioned athlete.''
''His punches wore you down,'' said the former champion.

Before anymone mentions it, obvioulsy not that 'recently' :DD

I don't know if someone has already mentioned it, but Billy Conn stated that Ray Actis hit him harder than anyone...including Joe Louis! Actis was a brutal puncher, but not overall a harder hitter than Louis...I don't think, but he must have landed the shot of shots on Conn!

Also, I think Tommy Loughran said that Leo Lomski hit him the hardest, but I may be wrong!

I've seen Tommy Morrison get stunned with jabs! Mercer did just land one good shot, he landed about 10 absolute bombs when he knocked Morrison unconcious!

I think it was Greg Haugen or Vinny Pazienza that said Hector Camacho had a fair bit of sting in his punches. Not their harding punching opponent but the comment was a bit of a surprise nonetheless :o

Cooney claimed it was his father who hit him the hardest in his life time, growing up.

Oscar De La Hoya had said that Arturo Gatti was the heaviest puncher he has ever been in with although Gatti never caught him flush. Also Shannon Briggs has said that Vitali K hits harder than Foreman. Although Chris Byrd says that Wladimir hits harder than Vitali. And continuing the Klitchsko theme, Lamon Brewster said that Lionel Butler hit him the hardest.

Lionel Butler was a vicious puncher! When he clipped Tony Tubbs is was one shot and down goes Tubbs...great knockout! Butler put together a decent string of wins, but he was never likely to make it to the top as he relied on the power punch, but he was sure a hell of a puncher!

He was a strange one Butler.

After his first 17 fights his record was 6-1-10 with only 2 ko's. He then had a 6 month break and then goes on a 15 fight (15 ko) winning streak, which includes knocking out Tony Tubbs in the 1st round and stopping Bonecrusher Smith in the 3rd, before losing to Lennox Lewis in a title eliminator. His career then becomes a bit hit or miss after that.

You can almost guarantee that every fighter will cite someone they beat as opposed to someone that floored or stopped them.

saad....once again you beat me to it.....so many examples of what you state.....abe simon said jersey joe hit him the hardest....and he kayoed joe.....moore may indeed have been hit harder by those he names, but he doesn't list ezzard charles, who kayoed him with one punch in their third fight, and knocked him down in their second, which caused moore to go into his shell for the rest of the fight. jim braddock sometimes said mAx baer hit him harder than joe louis.....but other times he did say louis. often, he qualified it by saying max's right hand was the hardest one punch he was ever hit by..

That seems really strange that he could go on a winning ko streak like that? I knew a no name guy who was a ko puncher but suffered a damage hand which made him a totally diff fighter. Maybe Butler suffered from hand probs early in his career and that break gave him time to get healthy?

If my memory serves me, he was way into drugs early on and straightened himself out bit for his run. He was on TNF quite a bit.

I remember watching Butler several times on TNF, which I dearly miss! I don't recall much about his life prior to winning, but a lot of fighters are often overmatched in the beginning and later they become good fighters! Freddie Pendleton comes to mind. Ted "Red Top" Davis had a losing record in close to, or around 150 career bouts, but he still managed to beat the likes of Tony DeMarco, George Araujo. Percy Bassett and Charley Riley as well as a slew of other top 10 ranked fighters and although he lost a lot Davis was rarely ever stopped and he faced some heavy-hitters such as Art Aragon and Sandy Saddler, who never stopped him!

Barrys right. You can't always judge fighters by their record on the surface. Two guys I remember well,Randy Smith and Danny Blake. I don't think either were ever stopped. Smith fought every good middle and super middle in the world and had some good wins. Blake knocked out tough Lenny Lapaglia twice. Fought everyone from middle to heavy. There are lots of guys out there who can really bang but for other reasons remain unknown.

For sure, British featherweight Steve Robinson another good example. He was 13-9-1 when handed a last minute title shot for the WBO title (48 hours notice) and was generally considered an average journeyman and given no chance. He won the title and then defended it 8 times

Boxinginsider.com: Who else was up there? Lennox?

Oliver McCall: "No, Lennox wasn't one of the hardest punchers that I - Buster Douglas hit me harder than Lennox did. Right hand."

Boxinginsider.com: How about Tyson? He has to be up there?

Oliver McCall: "Tyson's right there too. Lennox would probably be about fifth."

Boxinginsider.com: You sparred hundreds of rounds with Tyson, right?

Oliver McCall: "I guess I sparred more than 300 rounds with Tyson and he never knocked me down once. But I put him down once. We had a hell of a battle every time. That's why he paid me $2,000 a week."

Boxinginsider.com: You've never been knocked down, true?

Oliver McCall: "I've never been down sparring or in a fight, amateur or pro. In fact, I've never been shook up. I can take a helluva shot."
There's some short footage of Tyson sparring McCall in preparation for Tubbs. You'll see that Tyson specifically targets the left hip bone of MCCall. Oliver ships a couple of shots there & then gets out of the ring...

Regarding Lionel Butler, he turned pro without any amateur fights. That's why his early record is so spotty. Once he developed he became a menace, but gradually got into drugs and overeating.

Interview with Tim Witherspoon

BEST PUNCHER: Frank Bruno:
My defense was one of my best assets but Bruno hit me really hard early on. He had me stumbling and, although I stayed calm, there were people who thought I looked in serious trouble.

The coolest part about that piece was Tim naming Larry as the best overall at the end. He really thought highly of Tubbs. that was such a crappy fight, reading Tim it's odd to look outside the box and think about Tony's skills making it crappy.

The worst ever was pac, Barrera was his toughest opponent. fornicate him.

Anyone who ever fought Earnie Shavers said he hit them hardest, but who does Earnie Shavers say hit him the hardest?

I've never heard him speak on this.

Tubbs was a brilliant boxer, Saad! You hate him so much!
